Address: Mogadishu, Somalia

Dr. Abdurahman M. Abdullahi (Baadiyow) was born in 1954 in the district of

Elder (300 km north of Mogadishu) in the central region of Somalia. His
father was a famous Islamic scholar belonging to Qadiria Sufi brotherhoods.
He combines a rare quality of being military officer (19971-1986), electronic
engineer, Islamic scholar and civil society/political activist. He Joined the
Somali National Army in 1971 and was sent to the former Soviet Union as a
Cadet Officer to specialize in Missile Engineering from the Higher Air Defense
Academy in Odessa (currently in Ukraine).
After returning home during the Somali-Ethiopian war in 1977, he became an
army officer and continued in the service until 1986. Besides military service,
he became a lecturer in the faculty of engineering of Somali National
University. He deserted military service in 1986 in the rank of Lt. Colonel
after finishing 6 months military training in USA. During this period, Somalia
was at the brink of collapse and the civil war has already begun in which the
army was implicated. He refused to join armed clan-based factions supported
by the neighboring countries as well as being part of the oppressive regime
that was at war with its people.
Mr. Abdullahi migrated to Canada in joined the Institute of the Islamic
Studies, McGill University in Montreal receiving MA and PhD in Modern
Islamic History. He returned to Somalia in 1992 after finishing first
postgraduate degree at the peak of the civil war and became one of the

pioneers in establishing Somali civil society organizations. The priority of the

civil society was to revive education, provide primary social services and
engage in the reconciliation processes. Having been Director of Mercy-USA
for Aid and Development, an American NGO based in Michigan, Detroit
(1992-1997), he directed programs ranging from provision of health services,
nutrition, education and sport for peace.
In 1994, he was elected as the Chairman of the Somali Reconciliation
Council, an NGO known for its considerable efforts in the reconciliation
programs ranging from community , social and political levels. He was also
elected as a chairman for one of the first networks of Somali Civil Society
known as "Peace and Human Rights Network" which had succeeded to bring
together most of the modern civil society organizations at the national level.
Also, he is one of the founders of Mogadishu University, the first non-state
University established during the civil war in 1996 and became its Chairman
of Board of Trustees. Under his leadership, the Somali civil society
succeeded to diminish the role of the warlords and finally led to the
convening of the Somali Reconciliation Conference that was held in Djibouti
in 2000. Dr. Abdurahman became one of the advisers of the Djibouti
President being one of the Somali technical organizing committee and was
responsible in overseeing Transitional Charter making.
After helping establish first national Somali government after the civil war in
2000, Dr. Abdurahman has continued working in reconciling Somali society
and promoting peace and state-building. He had never participated in any
armed conflict where Somalis kill their brothers believing that the only way
out of the protracted Somali debacle was through dialogue and
reconciliation. He kept his reconciliation efforts between the Transitional
Government under President Abdiqasim and opposing armed groups as well
as between Abdullahi Yusuf's regime and the Union of the Islamic Courts that
had emerged in 2006.

Dr. Abdurahman became a presidential candidate in the 2012 race and made
great effort to bring together all political groups to form national unity
government. However, this project was foiled by the current regime. To
further reconciliation and national unity among all Somalis, he announced a
new political party under the name of "National Unity Party" in the beginning
of 2014. The major focus of the party is to create an environment for
political dialogue and further national reconciliation among war-torn Somalis.
The party had already established its branches in most of the regions in the
country and is in the process of opening chapters in the Somali Diaspora. It is
expected that Somalia will move away from clan power sharing known as 4.5
formula to popular democratic elections by 2016 and the party is preparing
to effectively participate in that election. For more on the party, visit its
website (www.midnimoqaran.so).

Besides political career and civil society activism, Dr. Abdurahman is also a
scholar who contributed in the Somali studies. He formed a new historical
perspective known as "Comprehensive Historical Perspective". This
perspective criticizes other three major perspectives on the study of Somali
history such as Anthropological, Marxist and revisionist. He participated in
many academic conferences and published a number of academic papers,
book chapters and numerous articles in Arabic, Somali and English
languages.
