Finite Element Analysis based analysis of Composite Bend Connector of Rectangular Section
Introduction:
Composite materials due to light weight and high strength ratio are becoming increasingly popular in
piping industry.
This is continuation project in which previously non conventional pipe cross-sections were analyzed
using FEA. Now the properties have been established, the next in line is the bend connectors which
are to be now made of composites
Objective
The analysis of Composites is a tedious task. The properties of the component will depend on nature
of fiber used in the composites, its orientation and how adjacent layers are stacking to create the
section.
The objectives of the project are
Thickness of layers

Finite Element (FE) analysis of Catalyst Bed Reactor Vessel
Introduction
Catalyst bed is a popular technique to speed up chemical processes. However current designs of a
bed are stagnant designs where the chemical reaction occurs while the fluid is stationary, as if in a
storage vessel
This process is time expensive and hence there is need of speeding up the process in which
the fluid flow is present. This can be achieved in a reactor vessel where the Catalyst bed is embedded
in the design.
This design has its own challenges, because as the reaction takes place, some quantity of the
catalyst stagnates, and this stagnation has to be removed, which is done using inclined nozzles. These
inclined nozzles are a design headache as they create a lot of stress zones
Objective
The objectives are
Optimizing the angular inclination of the nozzles and create design changes which will
stabilize the nozzle shell junction
(Note the reactions are usually exothermic and hence thermal stability of the vessel is also important)

Weight Optimization of Valve Design for emergency relief operation
Introduction
This is continuation project for emergency shut off valve, in which successful design and
implementation of the shut off operation is achieved.
However the current design is bulky and operational installation is proving difficult. Elaborate
arrangements need to be made to install the valves.
However during temporary operations or maintenance sometimes some locations need to
monitored for safety and need a emergency relief valve. But current valves take about 6 hrs to install
due to their weight. Hence there is need for light weight valves which can perform a similar
function, and which can be installed easily.
Objective
The objectives of the project are
To explore new material replacements that will make the valve light weight
To reduce valve weight using these materials without compromising on the performance

Finite Element Analysis of Emergency Shut Off Valve
Introduction
Most flow applications require regulating the flow of liquid, and usually the parameter of concern is
the pressure. This project focuses on the exchange of liquid between two chambers, where in it is
required that flow be shut off when a certain pressure is reached
Electronic valves are available, however the intent of this design project is have a total mechanical
system, which has an in built response mechanism.
Objective
The objective is to design the pressure valve, with regards to a pushing load and the valve countered
by a bending load by the flowing liquid. The dimensionality should be such that, self weight should
be the operational parameter for the valve with an integrated spring design to create an emergency
shut off operation

Finite Element Analysis based optimization of Composite connecting rod
Introduction
Connecting rod is a component that does not need much introduction. It is component that every
engine must have, and for that matter every compressor also needs. This component is manufactured
en mass, hence any weight reduction yields repetitive cost benefits.
In the new experimental vehicle U-SC the assembly needs to be light weight, and hence using a pure
composite carbide structure is being designed
Objective
The objective is to use Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and conduct a series of trial runs and try to
reduce the weight of the connecting rod. This may also involve working with different materials and
check their performance and come up with a light weight alternative.
The project includes extensive design modifications and then comparing stresses and natural
frequency of the resulting component.
