Abstract
The methanol extract of the bark of Litsea glutinosa showed antibacterial activity,
comparable to chloramphenicol, against all 16 tested microorganisms. 2000 Elsevier

Keywords: Litsea glutinosa; Antibacterial activity

Plant. Litsea glutinosa Lour. Lauraceae ., bark collected from Hetyasole, Bankura,
West Bengal, India, in August 1997 and identified Ref. No. BSIrCNHrTech.II.
by Dr G.S. Giri of Botanical Survey of India, Shibpur, Howrah. A voucher
specimen has been deposited in the Pharmacognosy Division of the Department of
Pharmaceutical Technology, Jadavpur University, Calcutta.
Uses in traditional medicine. The bark of L. glutinosa is widely used as a
demulcent. Ground and pasted material is used as an emollient. Mucilaginous bark

is used in diarrhoea and dysentery treatment, and also for sprains, bruises and
rheumatic gouty joints w1,2x.
Previously isolated constituents. No report.
Tested material. Methanol extract yield: 7.5%, on air-dried bark.. Phytochemical
screening w35x gave positive tests for alkaloids, steroids, triterpenoids, saponins,
and tannins.
Studied activity. Antibacterial activity by an agar diffusion method w6x.
Used microorganisms. Staphylococcus aureus ML 267., Bacillus pumilus 8241.,
Streptococcus pneumoniae 7465., Escherichia coli Row 7r12. obtained from the
Division of Microbiology, Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Jadavpur,
Calcutta, India. Bacillus subtilis CDr99r1., Lactobacillus arabinosus CDr99r1.,
Bacillus cereus V. mycoides., Sarcina lutea CDr99r1., Shigella dysenteriae 1.,
Shigella sonnei 2., Salmonella typhimurium 2., Vibrio cholerae 865. obtained from
the Central Drug Laboratory, Calcutta, India. Klebsiella pneumoniae RM8r98., E.
coli AM8r98., E. coli VC Sona wave 3: 37C., Proteus mirabilis AM8r98.
obtained from Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh, India.
Results. Reported in Table 1.
Conclusions. The methanol extract of Litsea glutinosa bark effectively inhibited
both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The results justify the reported
uses in diarrhoea and dysentery in traditional medicine.
