El Istmo Centroamericano durante el 2008 tuvo un movimiento
de carga de 94,6 millones de toneladas mtricas, lo que refiere
a un crecimiento que se ha dado a partir del 2001, el cual ha
representado el 65%, equivalente a 37.379.538 toneladas.
Adicionalmente se ha reflejado un crecimiento considerable
en la carga contenedorizada ya que en el 2001 este segmento
represent un 34% del total de la carga, mientras que en el 2008
un 53%, es decir, que del perodo del 2001 al 2008 este tipo de
carga aumento en 156%. Del mismo modo, el movimiento de
buques en el Istmo Centroamericano desde el 2001 hasta el 2008
ha reportado un crecimiento del 32,01% lo que equivale a 4.153
buques, siendo el ao 2005 el que mayor crecimiento report con un
9,47% equivalente a 651 buques, siendo El Salvador el que mayor
crecimiento ha tenido durante este periodo con 63,82% seguido de
Panam con el 38,89%. Por tanto el movimiento total de buques
para el 2008 fue de 17.127 buques. Asimismo, el movimiento
de contenedores en TEUs ha pasado de 3.232.460 en el 2001 a
7.451.965 en el 2008 lo que equivale a un 130,54% en el periodo
del 2001 al 2008.
La COCATRAM promueve iniciativas como la Estrategia Martima
Regional Centroamericana, el Proyecto de Rutas Martimas del Gran
Caribe, la Expansin de los Puertos de la Regin y el Transporte
Martimo de Corta Distancia entre otras, con el objetivo de convertir
a Centroamrica en una regin competitiva e integrada en el
comercio Martimo Mundial.
Por lo tanto, la COCATRAM tiene el honor de presentarle a la
regin centroamericana y al resto del mundo la primera edicin del
Manual de Puertos de Centroamrica en la que se describen las
caractersticas, trfico de carga y planes de sus 25 puertos.

TRAFFIC
In 2008 the Central American Isthmus recorded an overall cargo
traffic of 94.6 million tonnes. This represents a total growth for
2001-2008 of 65 per cent, equivalent to 37,379,538 tonnes.
In addition, containerized cargo traffic in particular experienced a
significant growth. In 2001 this sector represented 34 per cent of
total cargo movements; but in 2008 it climbed to 53 per cent. This
means that, in the period from 2001 to 2008, container shipping
was up by 156 per cent. Likewise, vessel traffic in the Central
American Isthmus between 2001 and 2008 rose by 32.01 per cent
or 4,153 vessels. During this period, the largest growth was in 2005
with an increase of 9.47 per cent, equivalent to 651 vessels. The
largest part of this increase was in El Salvador, with 63.82 per cent,
followed by Panama, with 38.89 per cent. Total shipping traffic in
2008 was 17,127 vessels. Container traffic has also gone up, from
3,232,460 teu in 2001 to 7,451,965 teu in 2008 an increase of
130.54 per cent for 2001-2008.
STRATEGY
COCATRAM is promoting initiatives such as the Central American
Regional Maritime Strategy, the Project of Maritime Routes of the
Greater Caribbean, the Regional Ports Expansion and Short Sea
Shipping with the aim of transforming Central America into a
competitive region, fully integrated into the global maritime trade.
Accordingly, COCATRAM is proud to present to the Central
American region, and to the rest of the world, the first edition of
the Ports of Central America Handbook, in which the characteristics,
cargo traffic and plans of its 25 ports are described. Most of the

Transporte Martimo COCATRAM
es un organismo especializado que
forma parte del Sistema de Integracin
de Centro Amrica SICA.COCATRAM es un organismo permanente,
que tiene su propio directorio y su sede
se encuentra en la ciudad de Managua,
Nicaragua. Como tal, responde a los
lineamientos y polticas del Consejo Sectorial
de Ministros de Transporte de Centro
Amrica.
FINALIDAD Y PROPSITO:
Este organismo se cre mediante la
resolucin No.5-80 de la XXIII reunin de
Ministros responsables de la Integracin
Econmica de Centro Amrica conocida
como ROMRIECA XXIII, celebrada el 5 de
julio de 1980.
Su constitucin establece lo siguiente:
FUNCIONES:
La COCATRAM se encarga de asesorar,
promover, facilitar y actuar como medio
de enlace, adems consigue recursos y se
encarga de capacitar a los diversos actores
del transporte martimo, principalmente a
los ministerios de transporte, autoridades
portuarias y las empresas de este sector, as
como usuarios y oferentes de servicios de
transporte.
QUINES SOMOS:
PROYECTOS EN EJECUCIN:
Programa de Proteccin Ambiental y
Control de la Contaminacin Originada
por el Transporte Martimo en el Golfo de
Honduras, financiado por el GEF-BID. Este
proyecto en su esencia busca disminuir el
impacto de la contaminacin producida por
los buques.
Proyecto Mapa de Rutas Martimas del Gran
Caribe coordinado con la Asociacin de
Estados del Caribe el cual permite que los
dueos de la carga de la regin conozcan
los servicios martimos disponibles para la
importacin y exportacin de las mercancas
el cual ha culminado su primera fase.
En la actualidad COCATRAM est apoyando,
conjuntamente con el Proyecto Mesoamrica
y la coordinacin de la Repblica de Panam
a travs de la Autoridad Martima de ese
pas un estudio de factibilidad para el
desarrollo del transporte martimo de corta
distancia en la regin.
Actualmente tambin desarrolla un fondo
de becas para la formacin y colocacin de
marinos centroamericanos y la realizacin de

Maritime Port Strategy for Central America
has been devised, including items such as:
maritime transportation; ports; community
maritime policy; maritime administrations;
training and education; marine and coastal
spaces.
PROJECTS IN PROGRESS
The Program for Environmental Protection and
Maritime Transport and Pollution Control in the
Gulf of Honduras, financed by the GEF-BID. In
essence, this project is aimed at reducing the
impact of pollution caused by shipping.
Maritime Route Maps of the Greater
Caribbean Project. This project, which is

CANAL
The canal serves more than 140
transportation routes globally and connects
the worlds main commercial arteries,
providing all vessels with a safe, reliable
and efficient service. The main trade route
is between northeast Asia and the United
States eastern seaboard. About 83.7 million
long tons of cargo was transported along this
route in the 2008 business year.
Another major route links the west coast of
Central America to the US eastern seaboard.
In the same period this route witnessed about
11 million long tons of cargo shipments.
In 2008 the total foreign trade figures for
Central America, including Panama, came to
63.1 million tonnes, of which 30 per cent or
19 million tonnes went via the Panama Canal.
The Republic of Panama is a transshipment
hub or focal point where motherships and
feeder vessels converge. This has led to a
transportation network using the countrys
logistics platform and complementing the
global logistic chain. There are port terminals
at both ends of the canal, operated by worldclass companies such as Hutchison Whampoa
Ltd, SSA Marine (Carrix) and Evergreen
Marine Corporation. The growth experienced

ANTECEDENTES
Puerto Corts, es el principal puerto de
Honduras (moviliza casi el 90% del trfico
por va martima) y se ubica en la costa
noreste del pas, sobre el mar Caribe. Es
el puerto ms importante y profundo
de Centroamrica (moviliza ms de 8,5
millones de toneladas anuales; tiene 1.157
metros de muelles principales que admiten
buques entre 10,50 metros y 11,50 metros
de calado), contando con la calificacin
de Puerto Seguro. El puerto se conecta
OBJETIVOS Y COMPONENTES
DEL PROYECTO DE EXPANSIN Y
MODERNIZACIN.
El objetivo general del Proyecto es mejorar
la capacidad y eficiencia de las operaciones
del puerto. Los objetivos especficos
consisten en: (i) reducir los costos de
operacin y los costos de tiempo de los
buques y mercaderas, as como posibilitar

El plan de la ENP incluye el dragado y relleno
de los espacios en donde se instalarn las
futuras terminales de Contenedores y de
Graneles Slidos Orgnicos. El objeto de
este componente, implica el dragado de
aproximadamente 2,5 millones de metros
cbicos de la baha de Puerto Corts y el
relleno de aproximadamente 47 hectreas
a travs de una reclamacin martima
donde se construirn las terminales
antes mencionadas, as como tambin la
proteccin de los taludes del relleno. Estos
trabajos sern contratados de manera
independiente de la construccin de la
terminal propiamente dicha.
TERMINAL DE CONTENEDORES
El plan de la ENP incluye el desarrollo de
una Terminal de Contenedores (TC). El
objeto de este componente, implica la
construccin de un nuevo frente de atraque
lineal del orden de 485 metros, para una
profundidad de aguas de 14,00 metros
y un rea de respaldo del orden de 23
hectreas pavimentadas para depsito de
contenedores, construccin de almacn
para actividades logsticas (CFS), accesos
y edificaciones auxiliares. Adicionalmente
incluye 22 hectreas a nivel de terracera
para usos mltiples y desarrollo futuro.
El proyecto incluye el equipamiento
completo de la TC con cuatro gras
prtico (post panamax) y la maquinaria de
patio auxiliar que consta de 18 carretillas
de prtico. La inversin total prevista es
de aproximadamente US$ 225 millones,
que corresponden al dragado, diseo,
construccin, supervisin de la obra y el
equipamiento de esta misma Terminal.
La ENP dispone de un anteproyecto de
la TC y documentos de licitacin para la
contratacin de la empresa constructora,
ms una definicin inicial del modelo de
operacin y del equipamiento necesario
para el mismo. Se prev contratar el diseo

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
CONTAINER TERMINAL
The ENP project includes developing
a container terminal. This involves
constructing a new linear mooring front
of 485 meters with a depth alongside of
14.0 meters; a back-up area of 23 paved
hectares for container storage; construction
of a container freight station (CFS); access
roads; and auxiliary buildings. In addition,
the plan includes 22 hectares of terracing
for multipurpose and future developments.
It also includes providing the terminal with
four post panamax gantry cranes and yard
machinery in the form of 18
straddle carriers. This will
involve a total investment of
about US$225 million to cover
dredging, design, construction,
works supervision and
equipping of this terminal.
The following documents have
been drawn up for ENP: a
pre-project for the container
terminal, tender conditions
for the building contractors;
and an initial definition of
the operational model and
corresponding equipment.
The plan is to award the

(SICA) que responde a los lineamientos
y polticas del Consejo Sectorial de
Ministros de Transportes (COMITRAN),
asesora, promueve, facilita, acta como
medio de enlace, gesta recursos y capacita
a los diferentes actores del transporte
martimo, principalmente a los Ministerios
de Transporte, Administraciones
Martimas, Empresas y Autoridades
Portuarias, Usuarios y Oferentes de
Servicios de Transporte Internacional.
En esa calidad, durante el ao 2001, realiz
el denominado Estudio de Prefactibilidad
para el Desarrollo del Cabotaje Regional en
Centroamrica, trabajo encomendado a
dos prestigiosos consultores internacionales
en la materia, Allan Harding y Robert
West, tomando en consideracin que
Centroamrica forma un corredor natural con
una longitud de 1.685 km desde la frontera
de Mxico hasta Panam, con acceso fluido
en ambas costas y consecuentemente el
acceso adecuado a los mercados del mundo.
El estudio, realizado nicamente desde
Guatemala hasta Panam, concluy que un
servicio de cabotaje regional centroamericano
por la costa del Pacfico, para los cinco
pases del MCCA es factible econmica y
financieramente recomendado la utilizacin
de un buque tipo ro-ro, sobre la base de
su compatibilidad con los servicios de
transporte terrestre existentes y que, adems,
garantizara el transporte de las mercancas,
superando cualquier crisis regional derivada
de la infraestructura terrestre, de los efectos
de los desastres naturales y de las eventuales
GLOBALIZACIN
Durante los aos 2007 y 2008, cuando en
la regin se empiezan a sentir los efectos
de la globalizacin y proliferan los tratados
de libre comercio, se desarrolla lo que
originalmente se denomin La iniciativa
Plan Puebla Panam, donde adems de
Centroamrica participara en la misma los
Estados Unidos Mexicanos.
Es a esta iniciativa donde se traslada la
posibilidad de ampliar el contexto de lo
que originalmente se denomin Cabotaje
Regional, formalizando y adoptando
el trmino y definicin de Transporte
Martimo de Corta Distancia: Movimiento
de mercancas y pasajeros por mar, entre
puertos situados en pases de Mesoamrica
o entre esos puertos y los situados en pases
no mesoamericanos en la lnea de costa
con los ocanos ribereos que rodean
Mesoamrica.
Durante la X Cumbre de Jefes de Estados
y de Gobierno del Mecanismo de Dilogo
y Concertacin de Tuxtla, la declaracin
de Villa Hermosa resuelve: Instruir a las
dependencias competentes a planificar y
ejecutar un proyecto para el desarrollo del
Transporte Martimo de Corta
Distancia (TMCD), bajo la
coordinacin de Panam.
La declaracin previamente
citada se enmarca dentro
de una nueva iniciativa
regional, donde el mbito
geogrfico se amplia hasta
Colombia y en consecuencia
la denominan: Proyecto
de Integracin y Desarrollo
Mesoamrica.

initiative
It was to this initiative that the original
regional cabotage project was redirected
for further and wider consideration. At
this point the term shortsea shipping was
formally adopted and was defined as traffic
of goods and passengers by sea between
ports in Meso-America or between those
ports and other ports located not in MesoAmerica but on the seaboards of the oceans
around Meso-America.
During the 10th Tuxtla Mechanism of Dialog
and Agreement Summit, the gathered
heads of state and government decided
in the Villahermosa Declaration to issue
instructions to the competent organizations
to devise and carry out a project to develop
shortsea shipping (abbreviated in Spanish to
TMCD) under the co-ordination of Panama.
WHere is Meso-aMeriCa?
The geographical region of Meso-America embraces southern Mexico,
Central America and Colombia. It covers an area of 2,162,561 sq km and has
a population of 115,916,477. By virtue of its 49 ports, the region qualifies as a
favorable site, with the required conditions and potential for development of
maritime transportation.

anuales y con un potente mercado de
carga nacional, Puerto Limn exhibe
un buen lugar entre los puertos de
Amrica Latina y principalmente en
Centro Amrica, en manejo de carga de
importacin y exportacin.
Consecuentemente, su liderazgo como
principal puerto de frutas frescas hacia los
mercados europeos y norteamericanos le
asegura la frecuencia regular de diversos
servicios de rutas martimas que se
constituyen en un imn para el trfico
de otras cargas de exportacin, pero que
ha desencadenado una saturacin en la
capacidad del puerto.
En agosto del ao 2008, con la asesora de
una empresa holandesa, se logr moldear
PLan Maestro
Las proyecciones trazadas en el Plan Maestro
Portuario muestran un aumento en el
trfico de contenedores, carga paletizada,
convencional y granel lquido, requiriendo
estimular la especializacin y el desarrollo de
su infraestructura para atender la creciente
demanda. Se estima que el comportamiento
del trfico de contenedores alcance entre 2
a 2,5 millones de TEUs en los prximos aos.

La estrategia de desarrollar terminales
especializadas de carga y para cruceros es una
medida para atender efectivamente el aumento
en el trfico de comercio exterior, como pas
exportador, y explotar el alto potencial turstico
a nivel internacional complementandose con
el crecimiento de la infraestructura turstica en
Costa Rica, la cual ha contribuido al desarrollo
econmico de este pas.
Por el momento, el proceso ya empez y se
espera concluir con el proceso de negociacin
con los representantes de los trabajadores
portuarios para avanzar en la concesin de los
servicios actuales, al tiempo que la construccin
del nuevo puerto inici su propio curso.

LonG-terM
Experts in the field as well as port authorities
share the view that the Limon-Moin port
complex is going through a vital stage
and that a long-term strategy is needed
for future development of ports on the
Caribbean coast of Costa Rica.
The port master plan predicts an increase
in container traffic, palletized cargo,
conventional cargo and liquid bulks. This
will lead to a requirement for greater
specialization and a need to develop the
existing infrastructure in order to cope with
the growth in demand. It is estimated that
container traffic will reach 2 to 2.5 million
teu in the next few years.
The master plan redefines the operations at
the Limon and Moin terminals.
The most pressing recommendation calls
for construction of a new 1.5 km container
transFerred
In turn, Port of Limon will cease operating
as a container and general cargo terminal.
These activities will gradually be transferred
to Moin. The principal aim of the master
plan is to transform the Limon Terminal
into a specialized port for cruise ships, an
international marina and a provider of other
ancillary services, while the handling of
import and export cargo will be redirected to
the specialized terminals at Port of Moin.
In April 2009 a tender was launched with
an invitation to bid for the concession of
the new port involving an investment of
US$812 million.

FaCiLidades
El Puerto de La Unin es multipropsito pero
con facilidades especializadas para el manejo
de contenedores y dispone de muelles de
tipo marginal. Est localizado en la zona
oriental de El Salvador, a una distancia de
185 km de la capital, San Salvador, y en esta
fase inicial, que llamamos Fase I, cuenta con
las siguientes facilidades:
Muelles con 820 metros lineales de
frente de atraque y un rea total de 72,4
manzanas, con una capacidad para el
manejo de contenedores de hasta 620 mil
TEUs (Unidades igual a un contenedor de 20
pies), cuando esta fase sea completamente
desarrollada por el operador;
MuLtiProPsito
Adicionalmente, el puerto en esta Fase I
cuenta con un rea de 23,1 manzanas, en
la que se encuentra ubicado un edificio
administrativo de 6 niveles y otro edificio
auxiliar de dos niveles; as como tambin
reas de estacionamiento de rastras para el
transporte de contenedores, y facilidades
para el tratamiento y suministro de agua
potable, entre otros. Por su parte las Fases II
y III proporcionarn al puerto una extensin
superficial adicional de 82,3 manzanas.
Tambin cuenta con un canal de acceso
que consta de un canal interior con una
longitud de 5 km, profundidad de -14
metros, un ancho de 140 metros y un canal
exterior con una longitud de 17 km, con una
profundidad de -14.5 metros y ancho de

Boost
CEPA was at all times fully aware that,
when this port became operative, it would
boost development not only in the eastern
region of the country but also nationwide
and across the Central American region as
a whole. Indeed, by achieving integration
with the world network of maritime trade,
it would be possible to attract national,
regional and extra-regional cargo for
onward distribution to the Americas and
other continents.
La Union will function as a multipurpose
port, equipped with special facilities for
container handling and also offering

Phases II and III will provide the port with an
additional area of 82.3 blocks.
The access channel consists of an internal
channel, 5 km long, 14.0 meters deep and
140 meters wide, and an external channel,
17 km long, 14.5 meters deep and 140
meters wide. A navaid system is in place
with 16 lighted marker buoys fitted with
radio aids and satellite positioning via the
AIS system.
La Union has a maximum capacity of 500,000
teu in Phase I. Once Phases II and III are
complete, this will increase to 1.7 million teu.
Not many Pacific ports can match the
characteristics and facilities offered by

comunes que permitan la evolucin del
sector martimo regional.
Este documento se enmarca dentro de
los lineamientos aprobados en diferentes
instancias del sistema de integracin de
Centro Amrica como las cumbres de jefes
de estado y de gobierno de los pases del
SICA y del Consejo Sectorial de Ministros de
Transporte de Centroamrica (COMITRAN).
Centroamrica ha acelerado en los
ltimos aos su insercin en la economa
mundial. Los problemas enfrentados en
la dcada de los ochenta provocaron
cambios substanciales en las polticas
econmicas y en el rol del Estado. El
proceso de integracin regional se convierte
en un factor estratgico para los pases
centroamericanos, cuyas organizaciones
pblicas y privadas enfrentan el reto de la
competitividad en un mundo cada vez ms
globalizado. En el 2008 la regin moviliz
94,7 millones de toneladas mtricas,
constituyendo un aumento del 65%
comparado con el 2001. El aumento del
movimiento de contenedores fue igual de
significativo al mover en el ao 2008 la cifra
de 7,5 millones de TEUs (unidad equivalente
a un contenedor de 20 pies), representando
iMPLeMentaCin
La implementacin de esta estrategia
llevar consigo propuestas concretas que
culminen en actividades de fomento de la
integracin regional en materia martima
portuaria, a travs de un marco regulador
que permita la modernizacin sistemtica
del mercado de servicios portuarios y
transporte internacional, de las conexiones
martimas intraregionales, cumpliendo con
las normas de seguridad martimo-portuaria
y preservacin del medio ambiente. El
logro de estas iniciativas ser posible
con el fortalecimiento y desarrollo de las
administraciones martimas y portuarias.
Se han planteado tres objetivos estratgicos:
1. Convertir a Centroamrica en una
regin competitiva e integrada en el comercio
martimo mundial en el marco de las normativas
y estndares internacionales que le competen.
PreParaCin
Durante el ltimo cuatrimestre del 2009
COCATRAM inici el proceso de preparacin
del plan de accin de la estrategia,
actualizando el estado en que se encuentra
cada uno de los pases con respecto a los
componentes enunciados en el documento.
Este diagnstico, presentado ante el foro
de la Red de Cooperacin Regional de
Autoridades Martimas de Centroamrica
(ROCRAM-CA), es la base para la discusin
y preparacin del Plan en la reunin de
octubre 2009 para iniciar el proceso de
implementacin regional en el 2010. Se
est conciente de la enorme tarea que
lleva por delante el logro de los objetivos
planteados, pero, la misma ser posible con
la participacin integral de las autoridades
pertinentes en cada uno de los pases
involucrados, del Sistema de Integracin de
Centro Amrica, del sector privado y de los
organismos de cooperacin internacional.

General description: Port handles mainly bulks (fertilizers, cement, grain, etc), LPG and tuna. Harbor is also
transshipment point for supply of stores to fishing and
cargo vessels. Construction of port began in late 1970s
and was completed in 1982. It has refrigerated storage
for seafood and an ice plant to supply fishing vessels.
Location: 131925N, 874840W. In Punta Gorda,
La Unin Municipality, department of La Unin, in
Gulf of Fonseca on Salvadoran Pacific coast. Honduran
border at El Amatillo is 45 minutes drive from port and
Nicaraguas Gusaule border is 160 km distant.
Administration: Corporacion Salvadorena de Inversiones (Corsain), an autonomous state corporation.
Working hours: Office hours are 08.30 to 16.40
hours while. Port operations area has a flexible time
schedule with services provided as needed 24 hours a
day, all year round.
Transportation: Capital, San Salvador, is 186 km
from port on CA-1 road, 210 km on CA-2 road and
45 minutes by air. San Miguel is 40 km distant and La
Union is 3 km away.
Documents: Vessel should contact Local Maritime
Port Authority (AMPL) and make request through
ship agent at least 24 hours before arrival. Following
information and documents to be submitted by ship

Fresh water: Port supplies industrial water to vessels.
Towage: Port provides tug services.
Repairs: Dry dock available for vessels up to 70 m
length and 1,750 t. Repairs include changing of hull
plates, repair of electrical or hydraulic propulsion
systems, painting, welding and other minor repairs.
Medical aid: Hospital is 3 km from port.
Traffic in 2008: 154,000 t, 104 vessels.
Future plans: Some harbor areas may be developed
to generate new business, such as installation of
tanks for reception of oil products and increase in
drydocking capacity to receive vessels up to 90 m
length and 2,150 t.

for this project will probably be called by the end of
2009 or the first half of 2010.
Setting up platforms in Zone 6 of port area for future

conectado al Atlntico con el Puerto de Chiriqui Grande a
travs de un oleoducto que se extiende 131 km a travs
del Istmo de Panam. Este oleoducto puede ser utilizado
para bombear crudos pesados de alta viscosidad hasta
hidrocarburos livianos de mnima viscosidad.

general cargo and a 4 loading system for fuels at a

displacement tons.

Shore leave: Allowed by local authorities. Crew
members to be inspected at Customs office when
going ashore and returning to ship. No unauthorized
person may carry alcohol or drugs.
Berths: Positions for mooring of vessels at Chiriqui Lagoon:
Inside lagoon: 859N, 8200W and 900N, 8204W
Outside lagoon: 912N, 8200W.
Pilotage: Mandatory. Available 24 hours. Vessels
must not approach terminal without authorization. Pilots may be requested from inside or outside
Chiriqui Lagoon.
Mooring: Once berth has been allocated, vessel may
come in under own power or use tug assistance to
ensure safe mooring.
Access channel: Canal del Tigre channel is 40.0 m
deep. Navigation buoys mark channel area.
Wharf: Two Monobuoys for mooring of tankers of
28,000 to 320,000 displacement tons. N buoy is 1.5
nm from terminal and S buoy is 1 nm away. Maximum
draft is 21.03 m for N buoy and 20.12 m for S buoy.
There is a general cargo wharf of 182.88 m length
and 10.97 m draft.
Equipment: Terminal has trucks and freight elevators.
Vessels use own gear to handle containers. Tanks,
valves and high-flow pumps are used for transfer of
fuels when operating with tankers.
Storage: Various tanks for oil storage, three with
floating roofs and three with permanent roofs. Total
storage capacity is 2.7 m barrels. There are also warehouses for sugar and fertilizers.
Fresh water: Supplied from general cargo wharf.
Towage: Not required.
Repairs: Large repair workshop for reefer containers
operated by terminals concession holder.
Medical aid: Social Security Medical Center in
Rambala area, 10 km from terminal.
Traffic in 2008: 2.7 m t, 101 vessels, 5,582 teu.
Future plans: Expansion of storage space at terminals
with six storage tanks for each terminal (three in Charco
Azul and three in Chiriqui Grande) as well as reversal of
oil pipeline flow so it runs from Atlantic to Pacific.
