KALKASKA The 2014
season has been a year of
ups and downs for the
Charlevoix football team,
but on Friday, October 3,
the Rayders put it all together in earning their first
Northern Michigan Football League II victory over
the Kalkaska Blazers 33-0.
The kids did some nice
things, a nice job overall,
Charlevoix coach Ron Bindi
said. Weve still got some
things to work on to be a really good football team, but
took a step in the right direction.
The Rayders got things
going early as the defense
turned in the first points of
the contest as linemen
Adam Michaud deflected a
screen pass and rumbled in
15 yards for a touchdown. A
successful Hunter Cox
point after and Charlevoix
was up 7-0.
After things settled down
for a while, Charlevoixs offense got untracked in the
second quarter as quarterback Nate Moon found pay-

dirt on a 5-yard keeper for a
13-0 lead that the Rayders
would carry into the half.
Following intermission,

Ben Boss extended the Rayders lead to 19-0 as he

bowled his was in from 5yards out.

Rayder running back

Sam Hovie added a pair of
touchdowns on runs of 60
and 18 yards, respectfully,

and a two-point conversion

for a 33-0 lead and the final
scoring of the contest.
We played well, we saw a
lot of improvement from
the kids, Bindi added. A
lot of kids got some playing
time, which down the road
will make us a better
team.
Hovie finished with 178
yards and two scores on 15
carries, while Boss added
58 yards and a touchdown
on 11 rush attempts to lead
the Rayder offense.
Moon went 4-of-6 passing
for 29 yards.
Defensively, Charlevoix
held the Blazers to 54 yards
in the contest, led by Bryan
Noirot with eight tackles.
Hovie added seven stops
and two sacks, while Austin
Putman recovered a fumble
and Michaud added his
pick-six to start the game.
Charlevoix, 3-3 overall, 1-

1 NMFL-II, will host East

Jordan on October 10 for

Ramblers roll

Dominating defense and ground game carry team

to undefeated 6-0 Record
by chris Fiel

boyne city 50, Glen Lake 0

force the Lakers into a four and

out, resulting in a punt on Glen
Lakes next possession.
With Boyne taking over at
their own 35, the Ramblers went
to Smith who would rumble his
way on both first and second
down to the 46 yard line and a
first down. On the next play from
scrimmage, Vroman would utilize his blazing speed to get outside near the home sideline, only
to break back to the middle of
the field through a big hole created by the Boyne City downfield
blockers and cruise in for another Rambler score, tack on a
Dalton Gardner extra point and
Boyne was up 21-0 with 5:44 remaining in the opening quarter.
Both teams would exchange
fumbles before the Ramblers
struck for fourth time in the
quarter, as Smith went up the
middle on a 4-yard run with :06
second remaining on the clock,
and following a successful point
after attempt, Boyne would carry

a 28-0 lead into the second quarter.

The Ramblers tacked on another score in the second stanza
for a 35-0 lead headed into halftime, as Cuper would take it in a
4-yard plunge, the score was set
up following Boyne City defensive lineman Connor Beebes
fumble recovery and long pass
completion from Cuper to a
streaking Vroman that brought
the team to the Laker 4-yard line.
Boyne City wasnt finished
though as Smith took the second
play of the second half, bounced
it outside and ran away from all
Laker defenders for a 55-yard
touchdown. The extra point by
Gardner was good, giving the
Ramblers a 42-0 cushion and giving the team a running clock for
the rest of the game.
Cuper would add the final
score of the contest with 1:01 remaining in the game on a keeper
up middle as he walked in untouched.

BOYNE CITY The Ramblers

celebrated their homecoming in
grand style on Friday, October 3,
rolling past Glen Lake 50-0, in
front of a packed house on a rain
soaked evening at Earl Brotherston Field.
Boyne wasted little time in establishing the tempo of the contest and how it would be played
out as Rambler senior linebacker,
Max Cuper scooped up a Laker
fumble at the Glen Lake 20 yard
line and rumbled in for a touchdown just 22 seconds into the
game and a 6-0 lead.
One minute and two plays later,
the Ramblers would once again
force the Lakers to cough up the
ball at the Glen Lake 17 yard line,
and Boyne defensive back Mac
Alexander would pounce on it.
Its nice to get off to a good
start like that. Our defense has
played well all year, so were not
surprised to see good things happen on that side of the ball, but
you certainly dont expect a
that, Rambler coach David Hills
said. My hats off to Glen Lake;
you could tell they were fighting
and scrapping until the very end,
and thats a proud group of
young men and a proud program.
I thought they played physical
and put up stiff test.
Boyne would take advantage of
the short field as Malik Smith
would eventually run it in on a
sweep around the left end from 8yards out at the 9:26 mark, plowing over the Laker secondary in
the process. Tack on a Maceo
Vroman two-point conversion
and the Ramblers were up 14-0
just over two minutes into the

Fame. (Photo by cINDA ShuMAkEr)
Offensively for the Ramblers,
Smith rushed 14 times for 123
yards and three scores, while
Vroman added 116 yards on five
carries and a TD.
Cuper added two rushing
touchdowns to go with 38 yards
passing. Vroman and Tanner
Kruzel each finished with one reception for Boyne.
Theres some explosiveness
on offense, I was very happy with
our level of execution on that
side of the ball this week, because we had sputtered the last
two weeks, Hills added. I was
real pleased to see that we were
doing things the right way. If we
do things the right way, those
kids can make something big out
of it.
On the defensive side of the
ball, Luke Sage continued his
hard-hitting style of play from
his linebacker position, recording 12 tackles, while Alexander,

Cuper and Lee Rainey all finished with five apiece.

Boyne forced the Lakers into
seven turnovers on the night, two
interceptions and five fumbles.
With the win, Boyne qualified
for the playoffs for the third consecutive season as the Ramblers
improve to 6-0 overall, 3-0 in the
Northern Michigan Football
League I.
Boyne travels to Benzie Central
on October 10 in another NMFL
conference match-up a contest
that the Ramblers will not overlook as the Huskies come into the
game with an 0-6 record.
Weve got to take care of business with Benzie, they are a big
physical team so well start getting our work in for that game in
the next couple of day and quite
honestly, weve got to get better at
being us, too. Weve got to continue to improve on this performance and get better.

Red Devils strike first, unable to hang on vs Norsemen

by chris Fiel

Suttons bay 31, East Jordan 12

EAST JORDAN The East
Jordan football took a big step
in the right direction in their
Northern Michigan Football
League II contest versus Suttons
Bay before falling 33-12 in front
of a homecoming crowd on October 3.
The Red Devils took their
opening drive of the contest 65
yards on four plays as sophomore running back Ryan Graham broke free for a 50-yard
run, resulting in an East Jordan
touchdown just under two minutes into the game and a 6-0
lead.
Suttons Bay would respond
with a pair of scores late in the
first quarter, taking a 14-6 lead
headed into the second.
EJ would answer the Norsemen in the second quarter as
quarterback Jordan Peterson
found an open Noah Raymond
for a 38-yard scoring strike and
pulled the Red Devils to within
two, 14-12, following an unsuccessful conversion attempt.
We played a lot better this
week, East Jordan coach Allan
Peterson said. Suttons Bay is a
very good team.
The Norsemen would strike
again just over two minutes

later and added a field goal with

5:29 remaining in the half, taking a 24-12 lead into the break.
Suttons Bay would put the
final points of the game on the
scoreboard halfway through the
third quarter.
East Jordan would roll up 111
yards on the ground as Graham
racked up 86 yards on 12 carries,
while Trey Peterson rushed for
25 yards.
Jordan Peterson finished 1-of2 passing for 38 yards and a
score. Raymond hauled in the
reception and touchdown.
Michael Suess and Wyatt
Crick led the Red Devil defense
with 11 and nine tackles respectfully, Bob Sherman and Herchell
Sutton recorded eight apiece,
while Jordan Cartwright and
Raymond finished with seven
each.
We had some kids play very
well this week, Wyatt Crick and
Herchell Sutton had very good
defensive games, coach Peterson added. We were out
manned up front but Ryan Graham and Trey Peterson were
able to make some tough yards.
The Red Devils, 0-6 overall, 0-3
NMFL II, travel to Charlevoix to
face the Rayders on October 10
at Charlevoixs Kipke Field.
Kickoff is 7 p.m.

of business in winning the Onaway Volleyball Invitational on
October 4, improving to 26-6-4 on
the season.
The girls hadnt seen competition for a full week, but I think
thats a good thing, Charlevoix
coach Audra Randall said. We
worked on many different aspects
of our game, trying to identify and
solve weakness in our defensive
game and strengthen our offensive
game.
In pool play, Charlevoix opened
against Class D fifth ranked host
Onaway and came out on top 25-19,
25-22. In the second and third

prior in a tense three match set.
This time around, Charlevoix
would down the Lady Chiefs in
two sets, 25-19, 25-14 to win the
tournament.
The girls walked in confident
and played confident through the
whole match, Randall added.
The girls are real open to new
and different ways to understand
the game and I think they capitalized on it.
Charlevoix finished with a 95
percent serve receive for the day,
as Alexis Tribfelner was 56-of-58,

Question & Answers About Selling Real Estate

Look for a Homes Potential

Part 2 of 2

compliments of Mike Stark,

coldwell banker Schmidt realtors
East Jordan. (231) 536-7700

Landscaping. Your best bet is a

moderately landscaped yard because
you can always improve landscaping
without spending too much. Worst
case, even if youre looking at dirt,
landscaping is one of the easier projects to tackle. Plus you get to design
it however youd like if youre starting from scratch.
Closets and garages. You can never
have too much storage space, which
is why so many newer homes have
three-car garages. But if you encounter a converted garage that is
now a bedroom or storage room,
dont give up. Converted garages can
almost always go back to their original purpose without much cost or
labor.
Kitchen. The most popular room in
the house, many homeowners want

their kitchen to be large and have

modern appliances. Dont let outdated color schemes deter you because theres nothing like a fresh coat
(or two) of paint to make a kitchen
your own. Plus, if you like the rest of
the house enough to make an offer,
you can give the kitchen a minor
spruce-up with some new appliances
or a major overhaul complete with
new countertops, cabinets, and flooring.
The exterior. If the home doesnt
have good curb appeal, try to picture
it with a fresh coat of paint and revitalized landscaping.
Pools. If you want a pool, buy a
home with a pool already built in.
Pools are expensive and you will not
get a full return on the cost when you
go to sell. Let someone else lose the
return. The cost of repairing a pool
is less than putting one in, so if

youre looking at a home with an old

pool that looks like its in bad shape,
its still a better bet than putting one
in later.
When making an offer, consider
what you cant live without, as well
as your budget. Also, be sure you hire
a professional home inspector to inspect the house. If the homes systems are in good working order and
the house has everything you want
except a minor item or two, make an
offer accordingly.
Most importantly, keep in mind
that unless youre building your
dream home from scratch, youll
probably never find the perfect home.
But seeing past a previous owners
bad decorating choices to the core of
the home and its potential for livability will yield you the home youve always wanted. It may take some work,
but heyits yours.
