East Jordan downs Boyne City

in early season matchup
by Chris Fiel

east Jordan 59, boyne City

50
BOYNE CITY It was
an early season showdown
that packed the gym in
Boyne City and had that
postseason atmosphere
throughout the building. In
the end, it would be the
East Jordan Red Devils
coming away with a 59-50
victory on December 12.
The Red Devils were able

to withstand a late run by

the Ramblers midway
through the fourth, where
Boyne took the lead 43-40
on a Derek Willis triple
with 4:53 remaining in the
contest.
East Jordan would then
respond with Donny Cutler
driving and drawing a foul,
where he would knock
down the first free throw
before missing the second,
only to have the ball end up
in teammate Jordan
Webers hands, where he

would launch a deep triple

and knock it down to put
the Red Devils back up 4443.
The two squads would
exchange leads over the
next couple of possessions
before East Jordan was finally able to take the lead
for good 47-45 on a Colin
Petrie layup with just
under three minutes remaining in the game.
The Red Devils would
then hit 12-of-14 shots from
the charity stripe down the
stretch to seal the win.
Happy with how we responded in second half to
come back and take the
lead and then the way guys
stepped up and kept it close
after three starters fouled
out and Tanner Kruzel not
able to play, Boyne City
coach Nick Redman said.
Something to build on.
The two teams came out
swinging in the highly anticipated early season contest, neither backing down
as they matched shot for
shot in a pretty much even
first quarter as they played
to a 17-all tie.
During the second quarter, the Red Devils created
some much needed separation as the Ramblers found
themselves in foul trouble
as three of their starters
were whistled for their
third foul of the contest,
forcing coach Redman to
utilize the Boyne bench,
where EJ took a 31-20 advantage into the break.
The third quarter saw
Boyne make a run at the
Red Devils behind the
shooting of Dalton Gardner (five points) and the
free throws of Corey Redman (6-of-6) before Redman
was whistled for his fourth
and fifth fouls as the Ramblers cut into the East Jordan lead to pull within
38-33 headed into the final
quarter.
Cutler finished with 18
points to lead the Red Devils, including 12-of-18 from
the free throw line.

Jordan Weber added 16,

Colin Petrie chipped in
with 15 and Collin Bajko
added six for East Jordan.
For the Ramblers, Gardner led the way with 13

points, while Redman

added 12. Zach Napont finished with nine and Cole
Butler had seven.
Boyne City (0-2 overall, 01 conference) hosts Elk

Rapids on December 16,

while East Jordan (2-0, 1-0)
hosts Charlevoix in another pair of key Lake
Michigan Conference contests.

The Red Devils came out strong
once again in the third quarter as
they reeled off seven unanswered

The Ramblers would use a
short burst of their own to pull
back to within seven headed into
the final quarter.
Boyne would continue their
climb back as they made a run
early in the fourth to pull even at
27-27 on a pair of Sidney McLeod
free throws with 4:33 to go in the
contest.
East Jordan would then finish
the game with a 9-2 run as Miranda Burks would knock down
four charity stripe tosses to seal
the win for the Red Devils.
We started the game down 8-0

Running isnt just running

by tina Sundelius

ELLSWORTH Ellsworths high

school has a total
student body enrollment of less than 100
yet produced a cross
country team of 27
dedicated runners.
Thats one-fourth of
the student body participating in the
most grueling of
extra-curricular activities. At the
end of the season, the Lancers and
one of the Lady Lancers went to the
state championships taking the rest
of the Lady Lancers, who barely
missed qualifying, along for moral
support. Superintendent Aaron
Gaffney attributed the teams draw
and success to the coach, ECS alumni
Ruben Oviedo-Delgado.
A Coach is one who prepares and
instructs. This can be accomplished
in many ways. Coaching styles vary
but Coach Ruben seems to have
found the style that makes his athletes want to do their best. Ruben
has that special it factor that
comes naturally. He is able to get students to do more than they think
they are capable of. It shows in the
number of kids we have participating in cross-county. Its truly amazing that a small-school with less than
100 students in grades 9-12 has 27 students participating in cross-countrythats a direct reflection on the coach
and the students desire to run for
him, said Gaffney.
Coach Ruben enjoys sharing his
passion for running. He has stated
that his goal in coaching is to instill
self-confidence, belief, and hope in
his runners. Hes all about doing it
for yourself. If you push yourself
and do your best then it will ultimately positively affect the team and
then you are contributing, no matter
where you place. Im contributing all
Im capable of and thats good
enough, said Sydney Sundelius.
Rubens secret to motivating his
runners is by teaching them how a
hard sport like running can be lots of
fun. I have so much respect for him
and I truly think he is a great man.
Theres something about his coaching that makes you want to work
harder. He gets you excited enough
about running that you just want to
work your butt off, said Katelyn
Sowers. Ruben knows that not every
run has to be hard, long and painful,
some runs are short, during some
runs the team holds conversations,
and some runs explore new places.
He shows them how to stop focusing
on the difficulty and to enjoy the
view and how bad days can be used
to have a good day of running, channeling anger, fear/emotions and leaving them out in the woods. Running
can be used as an escape.
When the students talk about cross
country they talk about their cross
country family. He made our
whole team like a family, and that is
what made us so strong, said

to strong start

Vanessa Cebulski. Making us a family made us a lot stronger, agreed

Mari Sweet.
The cross country family still encourages one another and can be
heard quoting Ruben in the halls at
school. Some words of wisdom they
will never forget, Run with your
heart, not your legs, your legs will
get tired and want to give up, but
with your heart, nothing can stop
you. And before a big test Rubens
wisdom is still being spread at
school, You just have to want it,
and embrace the pain are sentiments that seem to hold meaning for
more than running.
When two members of the team
were injured Ruben introduced Yoga
to keep them in shape while healing.
When some of our kids had injuries, and couldnt run, Ruben not
only encouraged them to do yoga, but
he did it with them. Now thats a
great coach, said parent Tracie
Nagel.
In fact, there were so many runners on the Ellsworth team that at
the Boyne Falls invitational a member of another team made a comment that Ellsworth brought an
army. And both boys and girls teams
continued to improve throughout the
season. Overall our teams had incredible seasons. Both teams placed
in the top 10 in the state Class D
meet. That trend looks like it will
continue. We have outstanding
younger runners, both boys and
girls. The kids are continuing to run
and train on their own. Were very
excited about the future of the
Ellsworth cross country program
said Gaffney.
Probably the element that contributes to Rubens ability to be the
inspiration he is, is his belief that
running isnt just running. Its taking yourself to your limits and discovering you can do more than you
thought you could over and over
again. Running is a million different things. Each person has their
own personal reason for running.
The hard part is finding that reason.
Most kids when they get invited to
run have the same response. I dont
want to run, Im not a runner, I hate
running, I cant run three miles. For
most kids they think of running as
hard, long, never ending pain. It is
true, running is hard, long and sometimes very painful, but if we learn to
embrace the pain, overcome it, we
can find things about ourselves that
only can come from running, said
Ruben.

of living space in this five-bedroom, two-bath chalet style home
there is plenty of room for the
family as well as out of town
guests to enjoy. Highlights include soaring cathedral ceiling,
an impressive wall of windows
framing the lake views, huge living room and family room and a
large deck overlooking the lake
frontage.
The property is extra deep and
while the home has a two-car
garage the new homeowners also
have the right to put up a pole
barn on the common area across
the road if they choose. The commons area adjoins a 300-foot
buffer zone for the Nature Conservancy property. And the lake
frontage is absolutely gorgeous
bringing year round recreation
right to your door.

The all-new 2015 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 is built with the DNA of a true Chevy truck and is expected to deliver
class-leading power, payload and trailering ratings. Colorado goes on sale in fall 2014.Photo General motorS.

MOTOR TREND Names Chevrolet

Colorado 2015 Truck of the Year
Midsize pickup outclasses competition in
design, engineering,
eciency, safety and
more
After its most comprehensive
truck evaluation program in history, MOTOR TREND has selected the Chevy Colorado as its
2015 Truck of the Year. The
2015 Colorado emerged as
MOTOR TRENDs 2015 Truck of
the Year by a rare unanimous
vote. The editors were particularly impressed with Colorados
handsome, clean-sheet design,
right-sized package, excellent
handling and overall capability.
Colorados potent-yet-efficient
powertrains also returned bestin-class fuel economy according
to Real MPG and EPA testing.
After days of testing, hundreds of miles on the road, and
our most rigorous truck testing
program to date, our editors
unanimously selected the Chevy
Colorado as our 2015 Truck of
the Year, said Edward Loh,
MOTOR TRENDs editor-inchief. Colorado is a smart, capable, and refreshingly honest
truck that makes a strong value
and efficiency statement.
Its perfectly sized and suited
for the needs of many of todays

truck users.
Said Sandor Piszar, Chevy
Trucks marketing director: The
Chevrolet Colorado offers customers the versatility of a
pickup in a powerful, refined,
fuel-efficient midsize package,
with up to 27 mpg EPA highway.
For Colorado to emerge from
MOTOR TRENDs thorough evaluation as the 2015 Truck of the
Year shows how Colorado is
changing the game by offering
truck customers fresh new
choices.
To determine which truck deserved top honors, the MOTOR
TREND test team subjected all of
the contenders to numerous instrumented and real-world road
tests. First up was standard
MOTOR TREND testing, which
included: 0-60 mph and 1/4-mile
acceleration, 60-0 mph braking,
and maximum lateral grip - all
without payload or trailered
loads.
A specific payload was then
added to each truck and van, and
the vehicles were then driven
more than 250 miles to the Arizona/Nevada border to evaluate
ride quality and loaded fuel economy. The vehicles were driven up
and down the famed Davis Dam
in Bullhead City, Ariz., for further assessment, including an instrumented test designed to
simulate a passing situation
while carrying a load.
The team then moved to a
world-class automotive proving

grounds for instrumented acceleration tests with nominal

weight trailers. Truck and
trailer were also driven through
a short handling course to evaluate acceleration, braking, maneuverability and outward
visibility. The final phase of evaluation involved a 21-mile road
loop through hills of Arizonas
Hualapai Mountains.
Following the teams intensive
evaluation, the trucks were
shipped to MOTOR TREND
headquarters in El Segundo to
undergo proprietary Real MPG
fuel-economy testing. Using advanced exhaust gas and flow-rate
analyzers, Real MPG measures
tailpipe emissions every second
during a three-hour, 88-mile
drive around the Los Angeles
area to record accurate realworld fuel economy.
Once testing was completed,
select MOTOR TREND editors
convened to determine which
truck would be crowned Truck of
the Year. The winner is not chosen from a direct comparison
against the other contenders, but
rather as a result of how each
contender performed in testing
and against the awards six criteria: Design Advancement, Engineering Excellence, Efficiency,
Safety, Value, and Performance
of Intended Function.
