Research

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: Our research focuses on development of cell components for anode
supported solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), alternative electrolyte materials of high ionic conductivity
(e.g. GDC and LaGaO3 based oxides), anode materials with redox tolerance, sulfur tolerance, and
carbontolerance,cathodematerialsofenhancedconductivitybasedonLaMnO3dopedwithrareearth
elements, composition and microstructure optimisation to achieve high open circuit voltage, low
polarizationlosses,highpoweroutputandlongtermstability,developfundamentalunderstandingto
arrive at a rationale design of SOFC operating at intermediate temperatures (about 700 oC), stack
development.
Innovative Ceramic Processing & Coatings: We use using colloidal based ceramic processing
techniquesfordirectconsolidationofstructuralandfunctionalceramics.Someprocessingtechniques
used are: Gelcasting, slipcasting, spin coating, dipcoating, Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) etc. We
have developed an innovative process of EPD on nonconducting substrates by use of optimized
poroussubstrateandbyusingathinlayerofconductivepolymerlayeronthesubstratebeforeEPD.
Our studies also includes development of waterbased EPD process by pulse DC application. Our
coating activity focuses on development of innovative thermal barrier coatings, functionally graded
coatings, engineered porous coatings, improved adhesive coating of bioactive materials such as
hydroxyapatite(HAp)onTiandTialloybasedimplantsetc.
NanostructuredMaterials:Preparationofperiodicarraysofnanoparticlesin2Dand3Doverlarge
domain is important for a number of application including data storage media, photonic crystals,
electronics, sensors (gas sensors, biosensors etc), advanced ceramics and nanopatterning
technology. Attributes of ordered particle assemblies highly desirable in most miniaturized products
of technological importance include longrange order, high packing density, high surface to volume
ratio, and reproducible shape and dimensions. The development of such structures is currently
hindered by an inability to conveniently and economically form such materials in large quantities,
preferablyunderambientconditions.
Our research in this area includes development of patterned micro and nanoordered arrays of
functional materials into patterned and ordered array of templates formed by selfassembly, photo
lithography, block copolymer etc. Incorporation of nanoparticles into the templates are being done
byelectrophoreticdeposition.Wearestudyingtheapplicationofsuchnanostructuresforgassensors.
