104/184 Midterm 2 Review Worksheet 2012W

FINAL EXAM: DEC 2011 (Select questions related to Midterm 2 Material)
Note: All questions are worth 3 marks unless otherwise stated.

1. Find the x-coordinate of the absolute maximum of f(x) = x 2 ! on its domain.

2. Find the interval(s) on which f(x) = ! ln () is increasing.

3. You bought a rare stamp collection for 10 million dollars. The auctioneer who sold it to you
estimated its value would increase at 12% per year, compounded continuously. If you want to
wait until the collection has tripled in value before you sell, how many years will you be waiting?

4. Let f and g be functions such that f (x) and g (x) are both continuous and increasing for all
real numbers x. Which of the following is ALWAYS true?

I. f + g is concave up everywhere.
II. f - g is concave up everywhere.
III. f g is concave up everywhere.

(A) I only.
(B) II only.
(C) I and II only.
(D) I and III only.
(E) I, II, and III.

5. Find two positive real numbers m and n whose product is 50 and whose sum is as small as
possible.

6. A box-shaped shipping crate with a square base is designed to have a volume of
16 ! . The material used to make the base costs twice as much per square metre as the
material in the sides, and the material used to make the top costs half as much per square
metre as the material in the sides. Suppose the material to makes the sides costs $20 per square
metre. What are the dimensions of the crate that minimize the cost of the materials? (12 marks)

! ! !! ! !!!!!

7. Consider the function f(x) =

. (14 marks)
! ! !!
Its first derivative and second derivative are given by:

f (x) =

(! ! !!)(! ! !!)
(! ! !!)!

and f (x) =

!!(! ! !!)
(! ! !!)!

a) Find all x such that f (x) = 0 or f (x) does not exist.
b) Find all x such that f (x) = 0 or f (x) does not exist.
c) On which intervals is f(x) increasing? On which intervals is f(x) decreasing?
d) On which intervals is f(x) concave up? On which intervals is f(x) concave down?
e) Find the coordinates of all local maxima, local minima, and inflection points. Be sure to
indicate which is which.

f) Find any asymptotes of the function f(x) and write their equations
g) Draw the graph of f(x) on the graph provided. Accurately place all critical points and inflection
points, indicate all asymptotes, and make sure your graph correctly shows where f(x) is
increasing and decreasing and correctly shows its concavity. (Range/Domain is +/-5)

MOCK MIDTERM 2: NOVEMBER 2007 (Excluding certain questions unrelated to 2012 Midterms)

b) f(x) = ! !!
!
c) f(x) = !

2. Sketch the graph of a function f which has the following properties: (12 marks)
(a) the domain of f is all real numbers;
(b) f has two inection points, one at x = 3 and one at x = 4;
(c) f has only one critical point;
(d) lim!!! = 0
(e) f has y = x as a slant asymptote as x ;
(f) f has a global minimum at 2
(g) f has no global maximum
(h) f(0) = 0

MOCK MIDTERM 2: OCTOBER 2009 (Excluding certain questions unrelated to 2012 Midterms)

1. Find the derivatives of the following functions (9 marks)
!

a) f(x) = ! !
b) f(x) = 2!" !!
c) f(x) =

! ! !!!!!

! ! !!" (!)

2. Let f(x) = ( ! 1)! (10 Marks)

a) Find the domain of f(x).
b) Determine the x-coordinates of the local maxima and minima (if any) and intervals where f(x)
is increasing or decreasing.
c) Determine intervals where f(x) is concave upwards or downwards, and the x-coordinates of
inflection points (if any).
d) Find any x-intercepts and y-intercepts.
e) Find any vertical, horizontal, or slant asymptotes for y = f(x).
f) Sketch the graph of y = f(x), showing the features given in items (a) to (e) above and giving the
(x; y) coordinates for all points occurring above.

3. A store manager wants to establish an optimal inventory policy for an item. Sales are
expected to be at a steady rate and should total 10 000 items sold during the year. Each time an
order is placed, a cost of $49 is incurred. Carrying costs for the year will be $2 per item, to be
figured on the average number of items in storage during the year. How many items should the
store manager order each time she orders to minimize the total inventory cost (which is the
total ordering cost plus the total carrying cost)?
