Genre Research

Action is one of the fiction-writing (invented/untrue)

techniques that authors and directors use to present a made-up
world. The genres of action within films include BIG
movements, such as explosions and destruction. The term
Action is also used to describe an exciting
event/circumstance that occurs.
The genre of action is used to present a storyline in which
one or more heroes are put up to face a series of various and
different challenges. These challenges usually include
physical battles between the antagonist and the protagonist
(usually concluding with the protagonist being the victor).
Films within the genre of action also include high-speed
chases and violence. These films include an interesting,
resourceful and mysterious main character that the audience
wants to find out more about and does so throughout the
duration of the film. This character faces life-threatening
and dangerous situations which involves the role of a villain.
Action movies use fast-paced scenes and other elements to keep
the audiences attention on the film. The uses of these
elements keep the audience of the edge of their seats as they
wait to see what happens in that particular scene. For
example, the uses of fast-paced scenes keep the audiences
attention focused on the production and create suspense at to
what the final outcome of the scene will be.
The genre of action was born in the 1920s where the genre
was usually swashbuckling adventure movies which usually
included Douglas Fairbanks in either a historical piece or a
Wild-West based film. However, as the genre began to evolve
over the decades, more and more variations began to happen.
For example, in the 1960s the legendary James Bond Films
were created and is now seen as one of the best inspirations
for all modern-day action films by introducing the role of a
One-man hero who is presented and shown to the audience as
resourceful, witty and extremely calm.

Action films are one of the most popular genres of

films/entertainment due to their constant elements of surprise
and immersion (mental involvement). As we see more and more
elements used in action films, this tells us that the genre is
always up to speed and isnt slowing down any time soon in the
future.
The genre of action also tends to have other genres
incorporated within it (sub genres) to achieve its effect upon
the audience. The Sub-Genres include: Action-Comedy, where the
genre of action combines with humour. Action-Comedy films
usually rely on the characters to bring out the humour, whilst
the action scenes tend to be a-lot less intense than in the
traditional, normal action movie.
Another example of a sub-genre of action is: Action-War, where
the action incorporates the traditional aspects on an action
film into a storyline that is based and revolves around war or
wartime. These movies can contain things such as stunts and
battles and also go into higher detail and explore the more
serious topic of war.
