Mental Retardation Intellectual Disability
o Low IQ and low adaptive functioning
o Severity is based on adaptive functioning, not IQ

o Childhood-onset Fluency Disorder (Stuttering)
o Social Communication Disorder
Deficits in social use of verbal/nonverbal communication
NO stereotyped/repetitive behaviors (as found in Autistic
Spectrum Disorder)
Autism Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
o Aspergers, Retts, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder now incorporated
into ASD
o Same definition: stereotyped/repetitive behaviors + deficits in social
use of communication
ADHD
o Same requirement of 6 of 12 symptoms grouped into 2 categories
(inattention & Hyperactivity/impulsivity)
o Onset is now before age 12 (instead of age 7)
o Can be co-diagnosed with ASD
o Adult ADHD requires only five symptoms instead of six in children
New Section: Specific Learning Disorder
o Combines disorders of reading, mathematics, written expression, and
learning disorder NOS
Schizophrenia
o Two Criterion A symptoms now required for diagnosis
o One of criterion A symptoms must be one of three symptoms:
Delusions, Hallucinations, or Disorganized Speech
o Subtypes of Schizophrenia (Paranoid, Disorganized, etc.) are eliminated
Schizoaffective Disorder

Mood disorder must be present for more than the period of time the
two Criterion A symptoms of Schizophrenia has been found
Delusional Disorder
o The belief can be nonbizarre or bizarre
New Mood Disorder: Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder
o Bipolar disorder in children Onset must be before age 18
o Persistent irritability, frequent episodes of severe behavioral dyscontrol
New Mood Disorder: Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)
o Moved from Appendix to Main Body of DSM
Bereavement
o Symptoms lasting less than 2 months since death of loved one has
been eliminated
o Bereavement becomes Depression if suffering, feelings of
worthlessness, suicidal ideation, poorer somatic health,
worse interpersonal and work functioning
Examples: Isolation of self from others, Work/marital/familial
issues, patient planning to meet with dead loved one
(suicide), severe weight loss (ex. 25 lbs in 1 month not by
medical condition)
Phobias
o Eliminate requirement that patient knows their phobia is excessive
or irrational
Panic Disorder & Agoraphobia
o Now unlinked can be diagnosed with either or both
Social Phobia
o Now requires >6 months of symptoms
Now an Anxiety Disorder: Separation Anxiety Disorder
o Onset before Age 18
o Separation Anxiety lasting longer than 6 months in duration
Now an Anxiety Disorder: Selective Mutism
New Section: Obsessive-Compulsive & Related Disorders
o Includes OCD!
o New Disorder: Hoarding Disorder
The show Hoarders = Symptoms
Related to OCD Obsession = desire hold items for long
periods of time, compulsions = holding items, and letting
items go causes severe distress
o New Disorder: Excoriation Disorder
Skin-Picking
o New specifier in section: With good/poor/no insight
o OCD can now be substance induced
Acute Stress Disorder/PTSD
o Specifier for how the patient experienced event (directly, witnessed, or
indirectly)
Dissociative Disorders
o

Fugue (moving to another location and forgetting previous events) is


now a specifier of dissociative amnesia
o Gaps in recall may be for everyday events, not just traumatic events
Hypochondriasis is now Illness Anxiety Disorder
New Somatic Symptom Disorder: Psychological Factors Affecting Other
Medical Conditions
Anorexia Nervosa
o Amenorrhea has been eliminated as a criterion (to allow males
and women on long-term contraceptives the diagnosis)
Bulimia Nervosa
o Requirement of binge eating w/ compensation reduced to once a week
(instead of twice)
o Binge Eating Disorder: Also only once a week (with no compensation)
Sleep Disorders
o Primary Insomnia now called Insomnia Disorder
o Narcolepsy is now associated with Hypocretin Deficiency
o New Disorder: REM Behavior Disorder
Acting out vivid dreams with sudden movements like
thrashing, running off the bed, and punching (vs. Nightmare:
REM, can remember dream but does not move)
o New Disorder: Restless Legs Syndrome
Sexual Disorders
o All Sexual Dysfunctions require >6 month requirement
o New Disorder: Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder
Merges Dyspareunia and Vaginismus together
Gender Identity Disorder is now its own section, called Gender Dysphoria
Intermittent Explosive Disorder
o Now includes verbal and noninjurious aggression (along with physical
aggression)
o Now must require impairment in daily functioning or financial/legal
consequences
Addictive Disorders
o New Addictive Disorder: Gambling Disorder
Excessive gambling (duh), that impairs daily functioning, can
have financial consequences
o Abuse and Dependence are now merged in the diagnosis of a
substance use disorder
o Cannabis and Caffeine Withdrawal are now disorders
o Severity specifier
Cognitive Disorders
o New Disorder: Major Neurocognitive Disorder
Combines Dementia and Amnesic disorder
Specifiers for specific diagnosis: Alzheimers, Frontotemporal,
Pick, HIV, Hungtington, etc.
There is now a difference between Paraphilia and Paraphilia Disorder
