The scores on the risk scale also indicated that the suicidal youth come from
families that had alcohol and drug abuse problems, that these youth had
friends that used drugs and alcohol and that they often engaged in dangerous
or risky behavior. (e.g., they had been in trouble with the law). Additionally, the
MG SUES Use scale for both parent and youth indicated significantly higher
levels of drugs and alcohol use among the suicidal group than the control
group, suggesting abuse and addiction problems in these adolescents who had
attempted suicide.

The most unequivocal finding is that of the alcohol effect on suicide risk.
Individual level-data as well as ecological and time-series data yield fairly
consistent estimates of this effect which proves in all instances to be of
substantial magnitude; a good third of the males suicides thus appears to be
