Key Findings

Residents in Americas cities have intense concerns about drunk driving and want
elected officials to prioritize solutions to this critical problem.
They also firmly believe that companies like Uber are important tools in the fight
against drunk driving. Many know from personal experience that Uber and similar
services provide options when people need them most.
o 78% of all adults agree their friends are less likely to drive after drinking since services
like Uber started operating in their cities.
o 57% of all people age 21 or older whove used transportation network services say that
they would drive after drinking more often if Uber werent around anymore.

Residents Concerned About Drunk Driving And Want To Know Their Leaders Are Too
Among city dwellers, 86% are concerned about drunk drivers in their area, including 45%
who are very concerned.

Far more than other transportation issues, people want their leaders encouraging solutions
that reduce drunk driving.

People Feel Safer With Uber On The Road And, Poll Results Reveal, They Should
City residents already recognize that transportation network services like Uber help reduce
drunk driving in their region.
o The majority of adults (58%) surveyed say that Uber and similar transportation network
companies definitely or probably reduce drunk driving in their cities.

Then, once given the following information about Uber, 87% percent report that
transportation options like Uber, Lyft and Sidecar are important to their city or region:
Ubers network of safe, reliable and affordable transportation options has already had a measurable
impact on drunk driving in cities in which Uber operates freely. For example, recent research in
Seattle has shown that Ubers presence in the market caused the number of arrests for driving under
the influence to decrease by more than 10%. Thats why theyve partnered with Mothers Against
Drunk Driving to continue to make our cities and streets safer.

own lives, and in the safety of their communities:

The polling results also complement emerging data on Ubers effectiveness at reducing
DUIs in cities.

Considering how reluctant people tend to be in polling to admit to bad behavior, it is


particularly remarkable to note that 57% of people age 21+ who use transportation network
services a full 17% of these cities populations say they would end up drinking and
driving more if Uber were no longer around.

Methodology
This research was conducted by Benenson Strategy Group. The interviews took place from
December 1st through 4th, 2014 and included 807 interviews with a representative general
population sample from the 19 cities where Uber has been operating for the longest period of
time. All interviews were conducted over the internet. The margin of error for the entire data set
is 3.38% at the 95% confidence level.
The cities polled included Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Denver,
Detroit, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Oklahoma City, Philadelphia,
Phoenix, Providence, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.
