Last year, it was recorded that over six hundred thousand
Americans were homeless. I would like to observe this particular group of people for many reasons. I have had some personal experience with homeless people, and I know that many of them do not choose to be homeless. Through the completion of this project, I might be able to help a homeless person get back on their feet! I would also like to experience how these people act, and see if the stereotypes about these people are true. I chose this topic, because I feel like I can actually make a difference in the world by completing this assignment. I will have a greater understanding and sense of compassion for homeless people because I will be interacting with them first-hand! I also chose this topic because I thought it would be easy to find events to attend and interact with them (soup kitchen, clothes closet, etc.). I am a little bit nervous about this project, because I do not fully know what to expect from this certain group of people. I am, however, very excited to take part in this Inquiry Project, because I honestly believe that I will learn and grow as a person by completing this project. List of events/ activities to attend. 1. Camino del Rey food pantry Attending this food pantry would give me a chance to interact with homeless people directly. I would have the opportunity to see how they react to certain situations, and I might have the chance to sit down with them and interview them. 2. Interview Rusty Price Rusty has played a big role in the opening of a homeless ministry through Camino del Rey, and he might have some good insight as to how these people become homeless, and what can be done to help them. 3. Pass out clothes/ essential items- I could do this simply by creating bags of essentials and handing them out to homeless people that I might meet in downtown Charlotte. I could have the chance to sit and talk with them and learn about their situation. 4. Attend Junior League of Charlotte Wearhouse- For this event, I would like to dress up as a homeless person and attend this clothes give away to see how a homeless person may be treated in this environment.
5. Spend the day in Charlotte dressed as a homeless man- This
would give me a chance to see how homeless people get treated in Charlotte, and will give me a chance to see how they feel. 6. Attend Camino Thrift Store- This is a store that is run through Camino Church at the Way. It is run much like Goodwill, and I could have another chance to interact with homeless people and observe the way they act. 7. Interview Angel- Angel is a homeless man that I met two years ago near Carolina mall. I had a small group of friends that took him to eat at the mall. He is a well-known homeless man in Concord, and I could learn a lot from him. 8. Pass out food to homeless and see how the react- Many people believe that homeless people only want money so they can go buy alcohol or drugs. I would like to pass out food, and see if they will take the food, or see if they only want money. 9. Pass out money to a homeless man and see what he does with itThis might be tricky, but I would like to give a homeless man money and follow him and see how he spends it!
