E6010 is used primarily for root pass welding because it has excellent penetration characteristics
which helps ensure complete fusion of the root pass. It is also good at preventing internal undercut.
E6010 can also be used for fill and cap passes for lower strength steels, ex API 5L X42 and lower.
E7010 is also used for used for root pass welding but is more likely to cause internal undercut and
produce a harder to remove slag that is not as easy to grind out or burn out with the second pass
causing a defect know as "wagon tracks". The slag is not a problem for fill passes as there is more
room for grinding due to the wider bevel opening and will burn out because other fill passes are
typically welded with higher heat input than the 2nd pass. E7010 is commonly used for line pipe steel
as all steel is an alloy steel; it just depends on the compatibility of the electrode with the steel alloy.
E7010 and E8010 are typically used for fill passes for higher strength steels.
All EXX10 electrodes are cellulose electrodes and generate high levels of hydrogen that is retained in
the weld. The level of retained hydrogen can be reduced with higher preheat and keeping the weld
hot after weld completion.
E7018 is not typically used for root pass welding since it contains higher levels of iron in the flux
coating making it difficult to hold the puddle for a root pass. E7016 can be used for root pass welding
but the welders must learn how it operates to be successful with that rod.

dear sir thanks for your reply.
1) i mean can we use other electrodes like E7010-P1 or E7018 in pipeline root welding or any other
?
3) Why we use E7010 electrodes in filling/capping with combination of E6010 in root for same API
5L X42 or A106 Gr.B carbon steel pipeline, if E7010 is for alloy steel ?

E6010 is used only for root weld in pipe line because during welding (cellulose electrodes)
decomposes cellulose + water, generates carbon monoxide and Hydrogen, Hydrogen gas is poor
electrical conductor and has a high ionization potential that causes the resistance of the arc
opening to increase and the electrons emission to decrease, which result in a higher arc voltage
and more penetrating arc

E 6010 is most suitable for deeply penetrarion, also it reduces slag inclusion.but if we use E
7018 we cant achieve good penetration.E 6010 electrodes mostly utilized in pipelines, for deep
penetration and good characteristics.

1) Question is not clear. What do you mean by option?
2) E7018 arc is not deeply penetrating like of E6010

3) E7010-A1 contains 0.5% Mo unlike E6010. There isn't any similar E7010 like E6010. SFA
5.5 deals with alloyed steels and 5.1 with carbon steel.

Dear experts,
1) i want to learn that is there any option of E6010 in root welding of pipe by SMAW
available ? i do know that same E6010 used for API 5L grade B, 42 and upto grade 60
also.
2) If we use E7018 in root (when it suits UTS of base metal) , what is the main problem ? is
it only about slag in inside face and penetration ?
3) Why E6010 is AWS SFA 5.1 and same E7010 is AWS SFA 5.5 (both looks same except
UTS) ?
please answer in details.
Regards,
sam.
