1 Introduction

1 Introduction
Term Alpha RT in this manual refers to Alpha RT MGF-101 unit.

1.1

GENERAL SAFETY INFORMATION

NOTE!
Only engineers trained by GE Healthcare are allowed to install the unit.
parts installed by nontrained personnel carry no warranty!

CAUTION!
Always check for proper seating on all the connectors located in the areas
you have worked. equipment damage can result if power is applied or
exposures made with improperly seated connectors!

WARNING!
Always install the proper fuses into the unit. failure to do so jeopardizes
patient, operator and equipment safety.

WARNING!
This unit has floating grounds. always make all scope measurements
differentially and always be careful when servicing the unit!

CAUTION!
When handling circuit boards, always utilize ground wrist straps or
grounding kits to prevent damage to the mos type chips. always keep
circuit boards in a static proof bag.

WARNING!
Always disconnect the unit from line supply by removing the plug from
wall outlet before opening the covers.

WARNING!
The X-ray tube utilizes a beryllium window. do not perform any operations
on beryllium which produce dust or fumes, such as grinding, grit blasting
or acid cleaning. beryllium dust or fumes are highly toxic and breathing
them can result in serious personal injury or death.

This X-ray unit may be dangerous to patient and operator unless safe
exposure factors and instructions are observed!

WARNING!
Electric safety: Use fault current protection connector box between unit
power plug and mains. High voltage tank and high voltage connectors are
dangerous areas in the that require special attention as well as 220 VAC
present on Inverter Board, AMD Board and fan connectors.

NOTE!
This unit has been tested at 60 Hz. If the unit will be installed to 50 Hz
mains network, refer to Chapter 5.2.10, Light field intensity adjustment for
collimator light field intensity adjustment and Chapter 4.9, Anode run
voltage check (Pr#57 Ano) or adjustment to 50 Hz mains network for
anode run voltage adjustment.

Two people are required through the mechanical installation, one person
thereafter.

SPACE REQUIREMENTS

The minimum space requirements and recommended free space around


the unit are shown in figure 2.1, Space requirements. Dimensions are in
millimeters (mm). To convert to inches, multiply given dimension by 0.0394
(1mm = 0.0394in).

STRENGTH/DURABILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE


WALL AND FLOOR

If the device is mounted on a wall, the pulling force exerted on each bolt is
approximately 600 N (135 lbs). The load on the floor is approximately 7350
kg/sq.m (1500 lb/sq.ft).
If the device is mounted on a base plate, the load on the floor is
approximately 600 kg/sq.m (122 lb/sq.ft).

INSTALLATIONS REQUIREMENTS & ENVIRONMENT


CONTROL

In order to minimize interference risks, the following requirements shall


apply.
Cables shielding & grounding
All interconnect cables to peripheral devices must be shielded and
properly grounded. Use of cables not properly shielded and grounded
may result in the equipment causing radio frequency interference.
Stacked components & equipment
The Alpha RT should not be used adjacent to or stacked with other
equipment; if adjacent or stacked use is necessary, the Alpha RT should be
observed to verify normal operation in the configuration in which it will be

Electrostatic discharges environment & recommendations
In order to reduce electrostatic discharges interferences, the floor
material shall be a dissipative material, versus the electrostatic charge
stacking. The relative humidity shall be at least 30 percent. The dissipative
material shall be connected to the system ground reference.
Pins of connectors should not be touched and connections should not be
made to these connectors unless ESD precautionary procedures are used.

3.1

INSTALLATION OF THE COUNTERWEIGHT

WARNING!
If the carriage or counterweight moves resulting cable movement over
the pulley of the vertical motor, there is a risk to damage the pulley or
drive motor assembly (Fig. 2.5). Specifically the fiber gear inside the motor
assembly can be damaged. Please follow the instructions for lifting the
column.
As the column is heavy, it will require at least two people to install it.

Insert the assembly pin through the holes at both sides of the column, and
tape the exposed ends (or use rubber band) to prevent its sliding out.

Get some help to slide the counterweight into the column. With the
counterweight inserted (leaving access to the cable bracket), remove
the two bolts from one bracket block. See C in figure 3.1, Vertical
motor and cables.

Remove the block and slide the cables over the shaft making sure the
cables are not twisted or crossed.

Replace the bracket block and tighten the bolts. Make sure that the
bolts are tight. Slide the counterweight until it contacts the assembly
pin. The pin is supporting the counterweight while the column is
being erected.

Install the mechanical stop.

Connect the vertical motor cable.

Install the top column cap.

Slide the carriage down the column until the cables are taut.

Verify that the assembly pin installed above is securely fastened to


the column and cannot fall out.

If wall installation kit is used, go to 3.2, Installation of the column to


the wall. If the installation is done on a base plate, go to 3.3,
Installation of the column to the base plate.

WARNING!
The total weight of the column, carriage and the counterweight is now
over 140 kg (390 lbs). Do not lift alone!

Attachment holes

Two 10mm (3/8) attachment bolts and wall plugs are used. Each bolt
should be able to take a load of 600 N (135 lbs). Lift up the column against
the wall and drill the holes like in figure 3.2, Wall attachment holes (Long /
short column version). Fix the enclosed plugs in the holes.

Lifting the column - minimum 2 people

CAUTION!
Make sure that the counterweight is resting against the assembly pin and
the carriage is down so that the cables are taut.

Lift the column up smoothly so that the counterweight lies on the


assembly pin, and attach the wall bracket to the holes in the wall.

WARNING!
The column assembly is heavy. Get assistance and be careful when
erecting the column.

Attach the column to the wall with two 10 mm bolts.

Check with a water-level that the column is vertical in both


directions.

CAUTION!
Do not remove the rubber band, holding the cable coming out through the
axle because it helps in installing the C-arm by keeping the cables out of
the way.

3.3

INSTALLATION OF THE COLUMN TO THE BASE PLATE

Unpack the base plate and compare its contents to the packing list.

Place the base plate in its final position so that the screw holes face
to the rear of the unit.

Bolt both side pieces to the base plate making sure they are centered
over the bolt holes. Trace the inside edge of the side plates.

Remove enough screws to allow the side pieces to swing out of the
way.

Install the rubber bumper to the base plate.

CAUTION!
Ensure that the counterweight is resting against the assembly pin and the
carriage is down so that the cables are taut.

CAUTION!
Damage to the surface of the base plate can occur if the column is
attempted to walk or slide.

Move the column over to the base plate and stand it up on top of
rubber bumper and the traced outline.

Swing one side plate A into position so that it fits into the groove of
the column (see Figure 3.5, The base plate assembly).

Slide the pressure plate B into the space between the back of the
column and the flange on the side plate.

CAUTION!
Plate B is not symmetrical and should be installed so that its width
matches the column width. Also notice the slot for the cable.

Tighten all bolts and check the column with a water-level. Shift the
column if necessary and tighten slightly the four bolts for the
pressure plate.

CAUTION!
Do not tighten the pressure plate too much since the counterweight might
jam in the lower position. Use for example 3 Nm tightening torque.

Assemble the rear cover plate C.

CAUTION!
The back cover plate C will not fit if the column is not in level.

INSTALLATION OF THE C-ARM

3.5.1

Preparing the carriage

Take the slide plate and slide it over the c-arm axle. The rounded side of
the plate will be facing towards the carriage. Do not tighten the lock
screws to hold the plate in place yet. You will have to set the correct
distance when finally putting the covers on.

3.5.2

Preparing the C-arm

Installing the ECS-mechanics to the c-arm:


1

Remove the c-arm top cover and the small back cover.

Place the C-arm on the floor so that it rests on the tube and image
receptor.

Attach
the
ECS
mechanism to the Carm with six bolts. See
figure 3.6, Installing the
ECS mechanism.

(This procedure requires that


the holes for these bolts are
aligned. If it is necessary to
move the ECS mechanism to
align these holes, use a
voltage supply, for example a
regular 9V battery, to run the
motor. Be careful not to run
the mechanism against
either end).

Make sure that the


metal plate plate attached to the ECS mechanism is not bent or
otherwise damaged.

3.5.3

Attaching the C-arm

Lift the C-arm into position by sliding the two upper bolts into the
grooves on the back plate. See figure 3.7, Attachment of the C-arm.
Take care that the ends of the cables are free and that the cables do
not get bent or pinched.

Attach the four lower bolts, and tighten all six attachment bolts.

Remove all carriage covers and check all internal spaces for loose
hardware, packing materials.

Make sure that the circuit boards and connectors are properly
installed.

Attach the connectors between the carriage and C-arm according to


their numbers (X10, X11, X17, X18, X20, X61).

Connectors AMD X1, AMD X2 and AMD X3 are attached to the anode
motor driver (AMD) board inside the C- arm (X61 is only on Alpha RT
models). See Figure 3.8, C-arm connectors.

X20 has 10 wires on the Alpha RT.

Attach the upper cover after all adjustments have been completed.

CAUTION!
It is strongly recommended that you check all the connectors again to
prevent power-on problems.

Hang the c-arm to the axle assembly so that the motor enters the
axle.

NOTE!
Be careful not to damage: 1. The motor, 2. The metal plate sticking out of
the ECS mechanism or 3. Microswitch placed on the side of the ECS
mechanism.

Tighten the top two bolts to the c-arm and fix the remaining four
bolts.

Close the connectors to the c-arm. Check that the bracket relieves
stress to the wires in the connectors. See figure 3.9, Securing the
cables to the c-arm.

3.6

Securing the cables to the c-arm

Make sure that the metal plate going through the slots of the optical
interrupters on the ECS Driver Board is correctly positioned and that
there are no cables entering its pathway when the c-arm moves.

ATTACHMENT OF THE CONTROL PANEL

NOTE!
If the Alpha ID is used, please read the separate manual.
The base of the control panel is attached on the right side of the unit. If
desired, the base can be moved to the other side of the unit or attached to
a wall. See Figure 3.10, Control panel attachment.

Install the control panel by pushing it against the base so that the plastic
knob mounts into the hole in the base. Use setscrews to fasten the panel
to the base.
Also fasten the exposure button to its place with a setscrew, if required.
Attach the cable of the panel to the D connector at the base of the
carriage.
The control may be installed flat to the side of the carriage, or to an angle
with the angled back piece.

RADIATION SHIELD ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION

Preparations:
Identify how the Alpha RT unit is mounted - on stationary base plate or
wall mounted. If the unit is wall mounted, the wall mount base plate is
provided with holes for the hinge support pieces (Fig. 3.12, Wall mount
base plate and hinge support plate).
Instructions:
Open the crate and compare the contents to the packing list. If the
stationary base plate is used, locate the hole provided for the hinge in
base the plate. Drop the sleeve in a hole mount.
Left or right side installation:
1

Press the other plastic sleeve into the large hole on the upper hinge
bracket.

Screw the bracket with M6 screws (2) on top of the column.

Put the lower hinge pin into the bottom sleeve.

Lift the shield into position, and put the upper pin through the upper
hinge bracket into the hinge on the shield.

Swing the shield into the desired position. Loosen the shield stop and
lower it until it contacts the floor.

Tighten the stop screws. If the wheel is used the adjustment is not
needed.

MAINS PLUG INSTALLATION

The unit is delivered without mains plug attached to allow fitting of locally
suitable type of mains connection.
Select suitable min 16A rated mains plug (that complies with local
regulations) with ground (PE) connection. A loose IEC type plug is included
in the unit delivery.
When connecting the wires, make sure that the yellow-green PE wire is
left min 10mm longer than the two other ones.

Provided that you have all the connectors closed, turn the power of
Alpha RT on. Check that the circuit breaker in the back of system is in
the ON position. Switch power ON using the main power switch in
the front.

The timer display shows r.ES., kV display Pr, mAs display software version
and density display shows the country code.
Resetting must be acknowledged by pushing the auto exp button, which
starts the internal testing routine.

Check that all segments of the 7-segment display and LEDs are lit.

C-arm display shows the software version of C-arm control board.

Install a cassette tunnel for normal film/screen imaging,


corresponding diaphragm and a cassette. Notice the cassette type:
Normal or Daylight.

Using the kV+ and kV- buttons, increase kV to 35, decrease to 23 kV,
and then return to the default kV setting.

Using the density+ and density- buttons, increase density to +7,


decrease to -7 and then return the setting to 0.

Change the filter and notice that the filter does change from
molybdenum to rhodium. Notice that the timer display changes from
no to rh. Select molybdenum (no) filter.

Push the auto exp until the manual mode is entered, the auto exp
light and density display are switched off and the mAs display will
indicate 12 mAs.

Select 25 kV. Using the mAs+ and mAs- buttons, increase the mAs
value to 500 (300 in New York installations, 600 in G.B installations),
and then decrease the display back down to 80. Go back to
automatic exposure mode by using the auto exp button.

Push the auto rel button twice. The auto rel light should first switch
off and then back on.

Press the vertical drive control down and remove the assembly pin.

Test the vertical drive control switches on both sides of the unit and
verify that up and down movements of the carriage starts slowly and
then speeds up as the switch is held down.

Test both pedals for compression adjustment. Check that the


compression paddle stops automatically after a pressure of
approximately 110 N (24 lbs) is reached, with operator adjustment
knob set to minimum. If not, see section Compression force and
speed adjustment.

Check that the breast thickness display and the compression force
changes when driving the compression down.

Check that the field light is switched ON when the down pedal is
pushed and goes OFF automatically after approximately 40 seconds.

Install a bucky and check that the GRID indicator lights up. Remove
the grid locking screw before use.

Install a magnification table and check that the MAGN indicator

Turn the c-arm and notice that the reading in the angle display on

C-arm brake can get stuck during the long storage time. Press the brake

The LEDs H1 (+34V), H2 (+15V), H4 (+5V) and H5 (if the C-arm is


shifted) on the ECS Driver Board turn on.

The C-arm brake release buttons in the c-arm handles do not


operate if the C-arm is shifted. The brake can be released only if the
C-arm is in the lowest position (the photo interrupter has entered the
slot and the microswitch on the side of the ECS mechanism is
activated).

Press C-arm up and C-arm down -buttons on the Driver Board


momentarily and see that the drive directions are correct. Drive the
C-arm down carefully. Make sure that the metal plate enters the
photo interrupter slot and that the movement stops.

WARNING!
The ECS mechanism and the motor will be damaged if the C-arm is driven
against a mechanical limit. The movement should be stopped by the
photo interrupter.

Drive the C-arm to its upper limit. Check that there is enough slack in
the cables. Make sure that the metal plate enters the photo
interrupter slot and that the movement is stopped.

Press Return -button and check that the adapter returns to lowest
position from all other positions. The movement can be stopped by
pressing the C-arm up or C-arm down buttons.

When driven away from the lowest position, check that the c-arm
brake does not release. After returning the c-arm, check that the
brake releases again.

PREVENTING X-RAYS (FOR EXAMPLE IN EXHIBITION)

NOTE!
The following three items disconnects all power from the generator, but
the system can be still operated. This can be done for example when
installing for an exhibition, where X-rays are not allowed.

Unplug connector X1 on the INVERTER Board (a four-pin connector).

Set the test switches on both the INVERTER Board and the FILAMENT
CONTROL Board to TEST position. Set the jumper X8 on the
FILAMENT CONTROL Board to 1-2 position [left-hand position]; (mA
feedback from the filament circuit only).

On the FILAMENT CONTROL Board unplug the connector X4 (power to


the filament).

Turn OFF the unit and plug in the connectors X1 on the INVERTER
board and X4 on the FILAMENT CONTROL board.

Set the test switch S1 on the INVERTER board to NORMAL position.


Set the jumper X8 on the FILAMENT CONTROL Board to 2-3
position (right-hand position).

Turn the unit ON from the mains switch.

The TUBEFAIL led H3 on the FILAMENT CONTROL Board is usually lit
before the first exposure after the unit is switched on. The activation of the
EXT signal turns the led off, and after a successful exposure the led
remains off.

Check that the display shows reset (r.ES in the timer display), on the
POWER SUPPLY board all LEDs are lit (3 pcs), on the FILAMENT
CONTROL board LEDs H8, H9 and H10 are lit, on the INVERTER Board
LEDs H8, H9 and H10 are lit.

Go into manual mode by pressing Autoexp. Select service mode by


pressing kV- and density- buttons for 3 sec. Select service mode
menu by pressing Density+ and Density- buttons.

All testing should be performed in service mode.

Press kV- or kV+ buttons to scroll until the kV display shows #57 and
the mAs display shows Ano. This is the anode run voltage measuring
mode without x-rays. Press Autoexp to enter into Ano program. If you
need to adjust the anode run to 50 Hz mains network, proceed to
step 3.

Press exposure button to run anode. Timer display will show running
time which is limited to 5 seconds. Check that no error messages are
displayed during that time. After this check that the anode motor
plate stops running (listen to the sound of the rotating anode) and
that no error messages are displayed on Control Panel timer-screen.
If this is not the case, perform step 3.

Immediately after pressing the exposure button, the testpoints TP1


and TP2 located at the edge of the AMD board (X4 pin 2 and X5 pin 2)
show voltage of 230V. With a true RMS (Digital Volt Meter) the
readout should be 30-42 VAC after 1.5 seconds (run voltage). It is
important also that the test #57 is completed without error.

NOTE!
Pay attention to potentiometer setting. It is different for 50 Hz and 60 Hz.

If necessary, adjust the anode running voltage with trimmer


potentiometer R100 on AMD Board.

Exit the test #57 and also the service mode. Test the unit in normal
manual mode with maximum mAs value, repeat exposures for 5
times and verify that no error appears.

During the exposure, listen that the first one of the power relays (K1)
on the INVERTER board is activated as the exposure button is
pressed, and that (K2) is activated after the preheat time, after app.
1.5 s.

Check also that on the INVERTER Board, the LEDs H2, H4, H5, H6, H7,
H11 and H12 and on the FILAMENT CONTROL board, the LEDs H2, H4,
H5, H6 and H7, turn on during the exposure.

4.10 PREHEAT AND MA-REGULATION CHECK

Connect the oscilloscope probe on the FILAMENT CONTROL board to


test point TP4 (mA feedback, TP12 or GND).

Check that large focus is on (MAGN led is off, toggle small/large focus
with DEN+ button in service mode) or a bucky or a cassette tunnel
attached.

Set the oscilloscope to 1V/div and 20ms/div. Set the trigger to app.
+1V / positive edge (storage mode).

Turn ON the unit. Set the unit to 27kV and 16-40 mAs (large focus).

Make an exposure and check the waveform. (see Fig. 2.28).

If the mA waveform contains either over- or undershoot at the startup, adjust from trimmer potentiometer R28 on the Filament control
board to obtain correct waveform.

NOTE!
The trimmer R28 is for LARGE FOCUS. For SMALL FOCUS, insert the
magnification cassette holder to the unit and adjust the preheat from
trimmer potentiometer R96. Be careful with preheat adjustment. Turn the
potentiometer little by little and check that scope figure will look as in
Figures 4.7, Correct preheat, 4.8, Preheat rises too fast "Overshoot" and
4.9, Preheat rises too slow.

Connect the DVM (averaging - NOT TRMS) on INVERTER BOARD to


TP22 and TP25 GND. Set the DVM to 0-10 Vdc range.

Set the unit to 28kV and 100 mAs (To get longer exposure time,
increase mAs. Make sure that the exposure is long enough for the
DVM reading to stabilize).

Make an exposure and check the voltage from the DVM during
exposure. It should be 2.80.01Vdc.

If not, adjust from trimmer potentiometer R63.

The Alpha RT AA- mode (auto kV) selects the used kV


according to a target time which is programmed for small
and large focus, and for Mo and Rh filters separately. The
target time depends on the compressed breast thickness
and is a linear curve calculated from two programmed
points.

The kV is selected on the basis that the target time for the compressed
breast thickness will be reached. The higher target time will result in lower
selected kV and vice versa.
To enter the service mode:
To enter the service mode press kV- and density- buttons simultaneously
until the Timer display shows Ser.
To enter the special program menu:
To enter the special program menu press density+ and density- buttons
simultaneously. The program number is displayed in the kV display and
the program name in the mAs display (Press DEN- first because otherwise
the system may toggle the focal spot with DEN+ key). The available
programs can be scrolled with the kV+ and kV- buttons. To enter the
desired program press the Autoexp program button. To leave the
program press Autoexp buttons once more. To leave the menu press
density+ and density- simultaneously.
Return to the menu from the special programs by pressing AUTOEXP
button.

Setup Info Printout and printer/PC connection #62 InF

Connect a matrix printer or a PC/Laptop to Alpha RT com port. Select


service program #52SUP with the kV+ or kV- buttons. Enter the program
pressing the Autoexp button. Press Autoexp to exit program #52SUP.
Select service program #62Inf with the kV+ or kV- buttons. Press Autoexp
to enter the program. The info is printed out immediately. See an example
of the printout on next page.
The serial connection is an ordinary asynchronous receiver/transmitter
(RS-232). The serial port is initialized in Alpha RT as follows:
1200 baud if printer or Alpha ID II is connected
9600 baud if Dataview (or Alpha ID) is connected (in SETUP
parameter i =2)
8,N,1 (8 databits, No parity [always 0], 1 stop bit)
The effect of the no parity bit and the stop bit is a total of two stop bits, so
receiving end must be configured correspondingly.
The data bytes are:

Enter the special program menu.

Select with kV+ button program number 52 (SUP).

Enter the program by pressing the AUTOEXP button.

Service menu program #64 AEC

Select the program number 64 (AEC) with the kV+ button.

Press AUTOEXP to enter the AEC program.

Check following in the AEC subprogram:

#64AEC/d The density display shows d. In this mode the wanted optical
density for the IQC must be programmed.
IQC is done with the sensitometer. Flash a film with
the sensitometer and process the film. Select the step
that has the optical density close to 1.00. Program
the O.D. into this mode. Inform the technologist to
follow this step when performing the IQC. Refer to
Operation Instructions, Chapter Integrated Quality
Control test.
IQC is done by making a test exposure with a
phantom and with the kV selected for IQC (see
parameter h). Program the wanted optical density
into this mode. Refer to Operation Instructions,
Chapter Integrated Quality Control test.
Press kV+

#64AEC/h The density display shows h. In this mode the IQC procedure
and kV are selected:
0 = IQC done with the sensitometer
23 - 35 = IQC done by a test film using 23 - 35 kV and
a phantom or 40 mm acrylic. Use Den+/Den- buttons
to select the kV value.
Press kV+

CAUTION!
Perform following programming after the AEC has been adjusted and
then the density & default values have been selected and programmed.

#64AEC/I The density display shows I. The Alpha RT AA-mode has socalled target times (= aimed exposure time) which can be
adjusted in the tAr program. This parameter sets the
maximum and minimum values for target times for large
focus (bucky installed) and small focus (mag stand installed)
separately.

Press autorel to toggle between min and max (factory


default: min 0.5 sec., max 3.5 sec.). The kV display will
show HI and LO respectively. Use Den+/- buttons to
alter the value.

#64AEC/c The density display shows c. This is for the AEC thickness
compensation including five (5) subparameters: P, r1, r2, S1,
S2 (in kV display). For further information on thickness
compensation refer to section AEC adjustment.

#64AEC/g The density display shows g. This is the software AEC gain
parameter. It is used for adjusting the basic optical density
(usually for Bucky molybdenum). refer to section AEC
adjustment.

CAUTION!
The gain affects all cassette holder/filter combinations.

#64AEC/E The density display shows E. The mAs display shows


thickness and kV display shows the initial kV for this
thickness. In this mode, the initial kV for different thicknesses
can be programmed (only used by Alpha RT AA-mode). This
setup has to be done both for the molybdenum and the
rhodium filter, and also separately for the bucky, cassette
tunnel and magnification table.
To change kV table:
Use the initial kV table (see next page) to design new values.

Select molybdenum filter.

Install cassette holder (bucky, cassette tunnel or mag.


table).

Drive the compression to 0 cm (Driving the paddle up


and down you cansee initial kV values for different
thicknesses).

Select the initial kV value for 0 cm with Density +/buttons.

Drive the compression paddle up 0.5 cm and select the


initial kV value with Density +/- buttons.

Repeat point 5. until you have programmed the initial


kV for 9.5 cm.

Install next cassette holder and repeat the kV


programming.

Select rhodium filter and repeat the same kV


programming for all cassette holders.

Pressing mAs- button resets the kV tables to factory default


values.
Press kV+
Press Autoexp to leave the AEC program and to enter the
special program menu.

NOTE!
If the factory default setting is changed, use the table below
to store the new values.

CAUTION!
Always drive the compression paddle from 00cm up when
reprogramming the initial kV.

#64AEC/U The density display shows U. In A- and AA-modes, the


parameter U enables the separate optical density
corrections for the following:
- for all kV steps within 20 - 35 kV
- for Molybdenum and Rhodium filter separately
- for Bucky, Magnification and cassette holders
separately
The range for kV correction is 0.70 - 1.30, while the default
value is 1.0.

#64AEC/S The density display shows S. The parameter S enables the


adjustment of the extent of the Density-button steps,
according to customer wishes or local regulations.
The density steps can be adjusted within a range of 5%-20%
(denoted in the screen as 5-20). The default setting is 10
(means that each time the density buttons of the Control
Panel are pressed, there will be a 10% increase or decrease
in density value, depending on which density button was
pressed).
In order to adjust the density steps:

Insert the bucky for large focus programming and magnification


stand for small focus programming. Also, both filters must be
programmed.

The Alpha RT AA- mode utilizes automatic kV procedure which selects the
used kV according to the breast thickness and a target time (= aimed
exposure time). The target time depends on the compressed breast
thickness and is linear curve calculated from two programmed points. See
a graph below.

Press Autoexp. Density display shows 0, kV display shows thickness


and mAs shows target time for this thickness (you can see target
times for different thicknesses by driving the paddle up and down).

Press Autorel. Density display shows 1 (T1). The kV display will show
the current compression thickness. Drive the compression plate to
desired thickness for the first target time. Alter the target time with
Den+/- buttons.

Press Autorel. The density display will show 2 (T2). The kV display will
show the current compression thickness. Drive the compression
plate to desired thickness for the second target time. Alter the target
time with Den+/- buttons.

Press Autorel. The mAs display will show PAS or ERR depending on
the programming being successful or not. The density display shows
0 and the target times for different thicknesses can be viewed by
driving the compression paddle up and down.

Change the filter/cassette holder and repeat from step 1.

NOTE!
The Target time is separately adjusted for Mo/Rh and Bucky/Magn/
Cassette tunnel.

Switch OFF the power for a few seconds. Turn the power ON and
ensure that the programming has been stored.

5.1.7

Error and exposure counters (Pr#58 CEC)

The exposure and error counters can be checked in the special program
#58 CEC. The timer display shows the exposure counters and the error
codes: tot, cnt, E01, E02, E03, E04, E07, E08, E09, E10, E11, E12, Slo, Er1,
Er2, Er3, Er4, Er5, Eaf, SYS.
The kV and mAs displays show the number of those errors. Pressing the
mAs- resets the counter in the display.
Pressing the kV+ button selects the next counter. Reset all the counters.
When the timer display shows tot, the exposure counter is shown. It
cannot be reset. The cnt counter is a resettable counter and should be
reset.
Leave the special program by pressing Autoexp.

ALIGNMENT & ADJUSTMENT

In case of normal service or maintenance: All required alignments and


adjustments must be performed. See additional information about the
tests in Service Manual.

5.2.1

5.2.2

Film processor evaluation

Test equipment requirement: Sensitometer, Densitometer, Thermometer.

Turn ON the film processor and let it warm up for at least half an
hour.

Run a clean-up film through the processor. This is just a piece of


regular film which will pick up dirt, etc., which would appear on your
film.

Obtain a sheet of the same film type to be used in your Alpha RT.
Select the color on the sensitometer that matches the color emitted
by the intensifying screen used.

Ensure that the emulsion side of the film is towards the light source
on the sensitometer. Expose two edges of the film, waiting 10
seconds between exposures, and run it through the processor.

Measure and record the optical density of step 1 for both edges of
the film. Record the average on both the film and in Table 2.6. Step 1
is the value of GROSS FOG (BASE FOG).

NOTE!
Always run the film through the processor in the same orientation and
location.

Find the step which has the density closest to 1.0. This step number is
the speed index. Record the average density and step number on the
film and in Table 2.6.

Go one step above and one step below the step of Speed Index.
Measure and record both densities.

Subtract the density value of the step below, from the density value
of the step above the speed index step. This result is the contrast
index. Record this on the film and in Table 5.5, Film processor
evaluation.

C-arm brake adjustment

Check that the brake has 170 N (38 lbs) of holding force measured at the
cassette holder; if not, open the side covers of the carriage and tighten the
nyloc nuts (3).
If the brake does not release properly, open the nuts (1) and adjust the
space (4) with the screws (2). The space should be about 0.1 to 0.4 mm.

CAUTION!
Make only minor adjustments of the nyloc nuts - measured by the flats of
the nuts.

C-arm angle display calibration (Pr#54 Can)

The c-arm angle is calibrated with the special program #54 CAn.
Select the special program and enter the program by pressing Autoexp.
The timer display will show CAn. The kV and mAs display indicates to 00.
Turn the c-arm to Cranio-Caudal, 0 position and press Autorel. The 0 is
now programmed.
The kV and mAs display indicates now to 180. If another calibration
angle than 180 is used, change the angle display with the +/- density
buttons. Turn the c-arm to exactly 180 and press the Autorel button.
If the calibration is correct, the mAs display will indicate PAS and the
program menu is entered. If the calibration is not correct, the program is
automatically returned to the beginning and the to 00 is displayed in the
kV and mAs display.

5.2.5

C-arm display

Compression force display calibration (Pr#55 Cfo)

The compression force display can be calibrated with the special program
#55 Cfo.

CAUTION!
Make sure that the c-arm angle display is calibrated before calibrating the
compression force display (Pr #54).

Enter the special program #55 by press Autoexp.

The timer display shows Cfo. The kV and mAs display indicates to 50.
Make sure that the compression paddle is attached and that there is 50 N
(5kg) compression.

Press Autorel; the 50N level is now programmed. The kV and mAs
display shows now to 200. Make a compression of exactly 200 N
(20kg).

If another maximum compression force is used, change the 200 N on the


display with the +/- density buttons.

display will indicate PAS.

C-arm display

Compression thickness display calibration (Pr#56 Cth)

The compression thickness display is calibrated with the special program


#56 Cth. After entering this program the mAs display shows to 00 with
bucky or to 20 with cassette tunnel.

Drive the compression paddle completely down against the bucky /


cassette tunnel. Press Autorel. The 0.0 / 2.0 cm level is now
programmed. The control unit shows to 60.

Place 60 mm acrylic on the Bucky / cassette tunnel and drive the


compression paddle down. If you do not have 60 mm acrylic
available, the 60-mm display can be changed from the Density+/buttons. Press Autorel.

Use proper (40-50 N) compression with the acrylics. Otherwise a


wrong thickness reading will affect clinical use.

NOTE!
This calibration has to be made for each cassette holder, magnification,
and bucky.

C-arm display

Compression force and speed adjustment with ECS

NOTE!
The compression force is preadjusted at the factory and does not have to
be measured during the installation.
However, if the compression force needs to be changed, a bathroom
scale should be used. When using a bathroom scale, make sure that the
scale has soft material on top to simulate a more realistic compression.
The electrical compression limit can be adjusted on the C&Z DRIVER
33035-IMG (see additional adjusting instructions in ECS manual 32921IMG).
User (major) adjustment is done by turning the external switch (the cable
coming to connector X5) in the front of the system. Minor adjustment can
be done by adjusting trimpot R33 (clockwise to increase).

CAUTION!
When changing the maximum force, keep the external knob on maximum
position and when changing the minimum force, keep external knob on
minimum position.

Pressing the ECS pedal activates only low speed
compression. Press ECS pedal and adjust suitable
(about 1cm/sec) low speed from trimpot R11 (clockwise
to increase).
Press REL release pedal to drive back.
Adjustment of compression paddle high speed
Adjust suitable (about 2cm/sec) high
speed from trimpot R12 (Clockwise to
increase). If high speed changes to low
speed without compresion force adjust

Subparameter 0 determines the compression limit mode. The available


modes are 0 (absolute limit) or 5 (temporary limit). With selection 0, the
compression stops at default 1. With selection 5, compression can be
continued by five individual steps up until default 6.
Range for subparameters 1-6 is 5-25,5 kg (11-56lbs.), lower parameter not
being less than the following parameter.
Subparameter 6 will be the maximum compression force option.
Comments
Adjust the desired parameter 2 and compression forces (switch positions
1-6) according to desires of the customer.
If needed, use customers own reference when adjusting forces. Adjust

After adjusting the compression paddle speed, adjust the ECS-movement


with R59 and R37 on ECS board. Press the C-ARM pedal to drive the c-arm
totally up.
Press the REL pedal and adjust the speed from R37 to about 5 cm / 5sec.
Press the ECS pedal and adjust the C-arm speed from R59 until the
dimension between floor level and compression paddle does not change
more than +/-2 cm.

5.2.8

The mechanical compression limit

The mechanical compression limit is set by adjusting the compression


clutch. The mechanical clutch is adjusted at the factory to stop the
compression at 28-30kg (62-66lbs). Do not readjust it, unless needed.
Remove the plastic plug in the back cover of the C-arm to reach the
sealed and labeled set screw and make adjustment. Remember to seal
the screw after adjustment.
Sliding bars clearance
To ensure smooth sliding of the compression mechanism, the sliding bars
need to have some clearance. The clearance is adjusted with the screw in
the bar end.

The measurement must be performed with a calibrated RTI, PMX-I/M or


equivalent.

Go into service mode when performing the test. Select manual


mode.

Attach cassette tunnel when measuring the LF. The Syncro Bucky
feature interrupts the x-rays for 50ms at grid turnaround points. The
interruption interferes the measurement.

When measuring the SF, no cassette holder should be used. Set the
parameters as shown in the table below and make the exposures.

5.2.10

Light field intensity adjustment

The light intensity is adjusted at the factory. If adjustment according to


local regulations is necessary, follow the instructions below.

NOTE!
The unit has been adjusted at the factory with 60 Hz main voltage
frequency. If the unit is being installed to 50 Hz mains network, adjust
collimator lamp voltage at 11 V. Adjust and check the light intensity as
described below.
For proper adjustment a lux-meter is recommended.
The collimator lamp intensity is adjusted by R12 and measured at
reference voltage test point TP 8 - TP 9 on the Supply Board.
Measure light intensity at each corner of the cassette holder. Minimum
average of these values should be the amount of LUX (ISLCs) that local
regulations require. Take note of the effect of the examination room
lighting unless it can be totally switched off.
The halogen lamp lifetime increases when lamp voltage is decreased and
vice versa.

5.2.11

Supply board

X-ray field alignment

Go into the service mode by pressing the kV- and density- buttons
simultaneously and holding them until ser is displayed on the timer
display.

Select the manual mode with 25 kV and 20 mAs.

Place a loaded cassette on the cassette holder so that the cassette


overhangs 20 mm on the chest wall edge of the holder.

Mark the chest wall edge of the film with a ruler placed 20 mm back
from the chest wall edge of the film. (The ruler now shows the actual
chest wall edge).

Make an exposure and develop the film. The exposed area between
the ruler and the chest wall edge of the film must be less than 6 mm
and more than 1 mm in USA, less than 3 mm and more than 0 mm in
Europe.

If it is necessary to make any adjustments, remove the lower cover of the


C-arm.
The diaphragm holder can be moved by loosening the two screws on one
side and tightening the respective screws on the opposite sides (A in
figure 5.10, X-ray field adjustment).

Return to the normal mode by briefly pressing the kV- and densitybuttons simultaneously. The timer display shows nor when the buttons
are released.

5.2.12

Light field alignment

The x-ray field adjustment must be checked and aligned prior to the light
field alignment. Place a loaded cassette in the holder and position the
corresponding diaphragm.

Go into the service mode by pressing the kV- and density- buttons
simultaneously and holding them until ser is displayed on the timer
display.

Select manual mode at 25 kV and 20 mAs.

Place a sheet of white paper on the cassette holder so that the light
field can be seen clearly. Place some coins at the corners of the
illuminated area on the cassette holder. Make an exposure and
develop the film.

The coins outlined on the film should not be more than 5 mm out of the
exposed field and sum of misalignments on opposite sides not more than
10 mm.
Light field correction for 12V 50W bulb
Loosen screws A and move the mirror B until the light field is adjusted. See
Fig. 5.11, Light field alignment.

The grid is aligned and the speed is adjusted at the factory and should
normally not be adjusted at the site. If adjustment and / or alignment is
necessary, however, follow the instructions below.

Remove the carbon fiber cover on the bucky. In the small bucky the
grid should be at the bottom of the grid drive block groove and
fastened with four set screws. In the large bucky the grid should be
fastened only with two set screws and aligned by the two rear set
screws.

Check that the grid doesnt touch the side lips of the bucky and that it
is centered. Check also that the grid is aligned parallel to the side lips.

Speed adjustment
The speed adjustment can be performed by entering the special program
#61 bUC.
Attach the bucky and enter the program by pressing Autoexp. Press the
exposure button to run the grid.
The timer display shows the grid turn-around time which cannot be
adjusted. The mAs display shows the adjustable grid travel time from side
to side.

Check that the fast turn-around times are equal at both ends. If
adjustment is necessary, move the slotted metal sheet travelling
through the optocoupler.

The grid travelling time is adjusted from R5 located on the buckycontrol board. In the CC position travel time of the grid should be 1.6
+/- 0.1 sec. The fast travel time should be 0.17 +/- 0.1 sec.

Make sure that the grid moves well in lateral positions (C-arm in +/90angle) as well.

Select max. kV change range of initial kV (factory default 4 kV) with


kV- and kV+ keys. Value can be selected between 0...9 kV. 0 kV
means that initial kV does not change at all during the exposure.
Value 9 means that kV can decrease or increase 9 kV from initial kV
(which was selected according the breast thickness) during
exposure.

Select the internal density correction factor within a range of 50% to


200% (0.50 on screen means 50% and 2.00 on mAs-screen means
200% change to exposure time). The default value is 1.00.

CAUTION!
The AEC is adjusted for one filter and one cassette holder, normally for the
molybdenum filter and with the bucky. The right optical densities for the
rest of the cassette holders with molybdenum filter and for all cassette
holders with rhodium filter are done later as described on Density
programming.

5.2.15

Adjusting the AEC board

Go to the service program #64 AEC and check that the AEC Gain
parameter g is set to 1.00.

Go back to service mode and make an exposure with semiautomatic


(A) mode 28kV Molybdenum filter @40 mmAcr. Use a compression
paddle and a Bucky with a loaded cassette in it. Detector must be in
center position C1. Also, remember to place the white plastic cover
before exposure.

Press Autorel after the exposure and record the three values
displayed in the mAs window one after one. Each value is displayed
for 1 second. The first value represents the integration time (in ms),
the second is AEC frequency (for example 320=32kHz) and the last
value is base frequency (for example 004=40Hz).

Make exposures (do not develop the film) and adjust the trimmer R17
(CCW to increase frequency) on the AEC board so that the AEC
frequency will be appr. 32kHz (that is the second value in the mAs
window reading about 320).

Also the exposure time is shown in the timer display (for example 315 =
315 ms, 1.54 = 1.54 sec.

Adjusting the optical density (=O.D)

Reload the cassette with a new film and make a new exposure with
the clinical kV (for example 26kV). Develop the film and mark the
optical density of the film (=O.D) to the graph next page.

reload the cassette with a new film and make a new exposure.

Draw a line between the two points and read the corresponding
GAIN for the wanted optical density. Notice that the object is to find
the right gain, so the initial gain values do not have to be 1.00 and
0.90. If the correct gain is for example 1.08, more proper gain values
would be 1.00 and 1.10.

Alter the AEC Gain parameter g in the service program #64 to obtain
the desired O.D. Diminishing g will increase the O.D and vice versa.

Make one control exposure with semi-automatic (A) mode the clinical
kV (for example 26kV) Molybdenum filter @40 mmAcr and measure
the O.D. to check the adjustment. Make note of the exposure time for
the thickness compensation in the next section.

CAUTION!
The AEC Gain g parameter will affect all exposures regardless of used
filter or cassette holder.

Make three exposures with different phantom thicknesses (for


example 20mm, 40mm, 60mm to get short, medium and long
exposure time) and record the corresponding exposure times and
O.D:s. Recommended exposure times would be appr. 500ms, 1sec
and 2 second exposures respectively.

Use the clinical kV (for example 26kV) and semi-Auto (A) mode for all
exposures.

Mark the points to the O.D vs. exposure time graph. Draw a line
through the three points. They should form a horizontal line within
0.15 O.D. If they do not, a thickness compensation will be required.

rotation point).

Press Autorel to scroll the r1 parameter in the kV display. Use Den+/


- buttons to change the value. This parameter gives the amount of
rotation at exposure times shorter than the rotation point P. For
example if the short exposure has 12% too dark, a density enter 0.88
for r1.

Press Autorel for the r2 parameter. Use Den+/- buttons to change


the value. This parameter gives the amount of rotation at exposure
times longer than the rotation point P. For example, if the long
exposure has 12% too light a density enter 1.12 for r2.

CAUTION!
Perform the thickness compensation with both filters (Mo/Rh) and all
cassette tunnels (Bucky/cassette holder/magnification tunnel) separately.
DO NOT change the gain parameter anymore. Use the density correction
(in Pr mode) to bring O.D. to same level with other filter/cassette holder
combinations.

Density programming

Select the molybdenum filter.

Install the cassette holder.

Check that the semiAuto (A) mode is on. Make a test exposure with
the default kV using 40 mm acrylic. Measure the O.D. If the O.D. is not
correct, increase or decrease the density with Den+/- keys. Repeat
until the O.D. is correct.

Mark the density value that produces the right optical density in the
table 2.9 or 2.10 and store the values by programming them in the
program (Pr) mode.

If the film/screen combination and default kV is the same for all channels
a, b and c, the density correction is the same also.

Install the magnification tunnel.

Repeat the instructions 3. and 4.

Change the rhodium filter

Select the default kV values that the site will use with the bucky,
cassette tunnel and magnification table. Mark the values in the
tables 5.8, Alpha RT settings for Molybdenum filter and 5.9, Alpha RT
settings for Rhodium filter.

Select the nearest film & screen combination from the table 5.8,
Alpha RT settings for Molybdenum filter that the site will use with the
bucky, cassette tunnel and magnification table. Mark the values in
the tables 5.8, Alpha RT settings for Molybdenum filter and 5.9, Alpha
RT settings for Rhodium filter.

Select molybdenum filter and install the bucky. Adjust the AEC
software gain. See section AEC Adjustment and Thickness
compensation adjustment.

Program the reference value for the IQC. See section Pr#64 AEC,
parameters d, h and Operation Instructions section INTEGRATED
QUALITY CONTROL TEST.

Go into (A) mode. Install the magnification kit. Make an exposure with
40mm acrylic using 30 kV or a clinical kV at that thickness. Process
the film and measure the optical density.
if the optical density is too high, select density- until the wanted
optical density is reached.
if the optical density is too low, select density+ until the wanted
optical density is reached.

Mark the new density value in the tables 5.8, Alpha RT settings for
Molybdenum filter and 5.9, Alpha RT settings for Rhodium filter.
Repeat this test with the cassette tunnel.

Select rhodium filter and repeat the previous test for the bucky,
cassette holder and magnification tunnel.

Go into program (Pr) mode (press Den-&Den+) and program the


default values marked in the tables 5.8, Alpha RT settings for
Molybdenum filter and 5.9, Alpha RT settings for Rhodium filter.

Select program #62 INF and press Autoexp to print the programmed
values.
