Re-enactors speak to Sunset Rotary

Last weeks Altus Sunset
Rotary Club program was
given by Floyd Robinson of
Fort Smith as Judge Isaac C.
Parker and his wife, Sue, as
Mary Parker. They are shown
above in costume with club

In his introduction,
Rotarian Bob Shingledecker
said Robinson served with

the U.S. Navy in a helicopter squadron in Vietnam, recently retired after 35 years
with ABF and is a longtime
volunteer with the Fort
Smith National Historic Site
and Museum of History.

Every family has at least
one Aunt Bertha and every
family has a bossy lady who
tries to be the head of everything. My Great-aunt
Bertha was both!
Aunt Bertha was married
two times and never had
any kids. Her first husband
was Bob Dalton. She was
married very young to him.
Then she married Bob Page.
Yep, another Bob, He died
after only six years. She lived
the rest of her life alone and
it couldnt have been easy
then, but she worked and
bought her own home.
If it needed repairs she
did it. Roof or whatever it
was. The house is still here
in the town of Mulberry, but
it certainly doesnt look like
it did then.
You talk about feisty,
good grief, that dont begin
to describe Aunt Bertha. A
dare devil in her younger
years, a holy terror in her
later years. Not rude or brash
just straight and to the point.
Dont try any nonsense with
my Aunt Bertha because
shed get you fast.
Aunt Bertha was my
grandmas sister and
thought she was the only
one in the family who had
enough sense to make any
kind of intelligent decision.
She bought a whole set of
doctors books used in their
schooling at that time and,
by golly, she thought she
was a doctor and knew more
than any doctor of that time.
To tell the truth she did know
more than some of them.
Her mother, my greatgrandma, lived with her after a while. Then her sister,
my Great-aunt Bea, moved in
after her husband died. My

sister, moved in eventually.
Their brother, my Uncle
Hooker, even lived there for
a while and Uncle Hookers
son, Pat, lived with them for
several years. Aunt Bertha
was the head Lion and ruled.
I didnt think much about
it then, but Im sure there
was a lot of conflict at times.
I spent nights there occasionally and every time I
went to the bathroom she
would come in to see what I
was doing.
She was a little five-foot
lady that weighed 90 pounds
soaking wet, but man was
she wired and loaded for
bear.
There was a loving
gentle side to Aunt Bertha,
as well, and that is the side I
saw most often. Shed work
cutting spinach or picking
cotton all day and always
gave us a nickel out of her
earnings. She bought material and sent it to my
grandma so Grandma could
make my mamma and her two
sisters a dress to wear to
school. They didnt have a
dress at the time and were
wearing a bloomer-type
thing that grandma made out
of a flower sack.
Aunt Bertha is the one
who named me when I was
born. I told her often that she
could have chosen a prettier
name.
She had curly and unruly
hair like mine. My grandma
always said I looked like
Aunt Bertha and my daddy
said I acted like her sometimes. HMMMM! Guess I
got a lot from my Aunt Bertha. Huh?

husband as Mary Parker six
years ago.
The couple told of
their (the Parkers) early
years, his from a poor family
and hers from a privileged
background, their marriage
in St. Joseph, Mo., where he
was practicing law, and their
move in 1872 to Fort Smith
which at that time had dirt
streets and was a rough
town.
Robinson, speaking as
the hanging judge, said a
former Civil War barracks
was converted into a courthouse and the jail, designed
for 70 people, at times held
200. I sent the younger
ones to reform school to
learn a trade instead of to
prison. I sentenced 160
people to hang, but 79 were
actually hung. If found
guilty of rape or murder, the
sentence was hanging, he
explained.
He said George Maledon, who stood only 5 tall,
became the most famous
hangman and most people
were afraid to walk with him.
One of the first deputies
hired by Judge Parker was
Bass Reeves, a former slave,
who was a master of disguise, spoke five languages
and couldnt read or write
but never handed the wrong
writ to the person he arrested.
The Robinsons (Parkers)
detailed their community involvement in Fort Smith,
working toward the first state
fair, the first non-religious
hospital and the first library
and supporting public
schools, where they enrolled
their two sons.
Mrs. Parker said she
was made executor when her
husband died and had to
sue the federal government
to get his last months pay
of $400.

Hillard enlists in
Army Natl Guard
Private (PVT) Dalton A.
Hillard enlisted into the Arkansas Army National Guard
and has earned education
benefits valued at $50,420.
PVT Hillard will be attending Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training before returning to his unit in Arkansas.
He is the son of Shannon
L. Keech of Altus and Curtis
G. Hillard Jr. and is a graduate of Ozark High School.

Well, I hope your week

about like one expects this
time of the year. Everyone, I
hope, is doing well, Cebo is
getting better as time goes
by.

Betty's Briefs

There sure was a nip in
the air after church today.
The past week has been
a busy one for me.
Wednesday I had a routine visit with Dr. Ward. All
went well there. The staff
had the patients to wear
masks as the flu has been so
predominant.
Elaine and I didnt meet
this week as she was down
with the flu, so much so that
she ended up in the ER at
our hospital. As of Sunday
she was much better.
Friday eight of us met at
Webb City Baptist Church
for our monthly lunch outing. We were fewer in number as some had the flu and
others were taking care of
grandchildren that had the
flu. Kay Harty was our
chauffeur. We chose to go
to JJs in Alma. I was curious as 40 years ago I worked
at the former Ozark Truck
Plaza with a gal named
Johnnie and her mother,
Jane, made pies there.
Johnnie and her mom left and
went into business at JJs. I
was curious if Johnnie still
owned it. As it turned out
she does and she was there
and I was able to see her after all these years as was
Carol Miller. Shes been with
Johnnie all these years and
cooks there. Jane and my
mom were good friends.
Jane passed away years before Mom did. I had not been
there since Mom died in
1998. The food was great
and it was good to meet with
old acquaintances. From
there we stopped by the
former Ozark Restaurant and
had pie. They have a variety
of pies. The pies are listed
on a big blackboard with a
checkmark by the ones
made for the day. They too
were great. The familiar face
I saw there was Regina Hice.

$3.45 and silk stocking were
49 cents.
My mother would have
been 15 years old in 1930, but
she would never have had
eight or nine dollars to spend
on herself. By 1939 she was
a widow with five small children. I know she had it very
hard and my brothers and
sisters couldnt have much
at any time. I know Christmas was never very much.
Maybe we just dont
know how good we have it.

met him years ago at the old
Ozark Restaurant as he was
one of the regulars.
I enjoyed phone visits
with my Laura, Leah and
Kasey. Little Owen had a
bout with the flu and had to
go to the doctor, but is back
to his active self this weekend.
I had a phone call from
my cousin, Maria Patrick
Oakley, in Buffalo, N.Y., to let
me know that my Turner and
Marcum genealogy books
were in the mail. She and her
sister, Sandra, took them
home with them when they
were here last spring to make

Stop and give thanks for all

the good Lord gives you
daily.
There is so much we
could live without and save
some money for hard times.
Not many people do it.
Maybe all of us should live
like we are living in the 1930s.
Including getting back in
church and take our children.
Speaking of children I
cannot believe that sweet
Chelsea Kinney is old
enough to get married, but
she sent Cebo and me a save
the date announcement. So
you can bet we will save
June 13. I still cant believe
she is all grown up.
Tina Kinney told me that
all of them are doing well.
They are all busy and time is
flying fast.
I hope that Stuart Wilson
is feeling better. He has been
down this week. Pray for him
to be healthy soon.

United Methodist Church in

Eternity
Have you ever stopped and thought where you would
spend eternity? You may think, I have time, but you never
know when your time on earth is up or when Jesus may
return. This isnt to be taken lightly, its serious. You will
enter into Heaven or Hell, the choice is yours to follow
Jesus or not to follow.
1 John 5:11-13: And this is the record, that God hath
given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that
hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of
God hath not life. These things have I written unto you
that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may
know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on
the name of the Son of God.
Jesus died on the cross and arose on the third day
so we could have life to join him in Heaven one day.
Jesus did this for all of us. It doesnt matter who you are
or what you may have done, you can be saved. Jesus
loves us all and cares what happens to us. We just
need to turn our life over to Jesus and follow after Him
and seek His guidance. If Jesus is speaking to you dont
hesitate, turn your life over to Him and you will become a
new person in Jesus Christ. Your life will change for the
better and each day is a work in progress, it wont happen overnight.
Jesus is here to help you see and understand His
words and the way we are suppose to live our lives.
Now, you wont be perfect and youre not without sin,
thou Jesus will forgive you if you repent of that sin and
you need to turn away from it. When you mess up, Jesus
will let you know and to make things right.
When you have Jesus Christ in your life you will see
and do things differently. You can pray, talk to Him, give
praise, thanks anytime and anywhere. He is there listening to you. He will speak to you in special ways and
bless you abundantly. Jesus spirit lives within you and
you will know. Its just awesome knowing I have a father
who went through so much for me so that one day I
would be joining Him. To know the power of His love and
knowing Im being watched over and protected. Someone I can turn to in good or bad times, give praise to,
pray and talk to anytime and anywhere and even sing to
Him. I am very blessed and thankful.
Do you know Jesus? Has Jesus been knocking at
your hearts door to let Him in? All you have to do is
repent of your sins, ask for forgiveness for those sins,
accept Jesus into your heart and believe He arose on
the third day and you will be saved.
Romans 3:23-24: For all have sinned, and come
short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his
grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
Romans 6:23: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift
of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 5:8: But God commendeth his love toward us,
in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 10:9-10: That if thou shalt confess with thy
mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart
that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be
saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:13: For whosoever shall call upon
the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Just always remember Jesus loves and cares for
you. And wants you to be part of His family. He will always be here for you with His arms open wide. Thats
what a Father does.
