HMPR Cast-in Channels - Introduction

HMPR Cast in channels are rolled channels with
swaged studs that are cast in to concrete walls.
This xing system allows practical xations into
walls, slabs, beams and columns that securely
transfer the loads on to the buildings substrate.
HTB T head bolts and HMLN lock nuts are available
to allow secure and easy connections on to the cast
in channels. The use of this system is applicable
in a wide range of construction works.
Cast-in channels are rst secured to the form work
at designated positions. Channels are provided
with ller to avoid the concrete from entering inside
the channel slot.
The ller is taken out after the concrete has dried
and connections are made with corresponding T
head bolts and lock nuts at desired positions. Three
dimensional adjustability is achieved through
exible design.
The use of cast-in channels for connections offers

Careful planning needs to

be done prior to concrete
casting. Cast in channel
types
should
be
determined according to
the load capacities, edge
distances, area of
applications
etc.
Channels positioning
should be incorporated in
to the shop drawings of
the form works in order
to provide clear instructions for installation on
site.

Cast in channels are widely used for the installation of curtain

walls. Unitised panels with materials such as glass and natural
stone already incorporated are prefabricated. These panels are
erected on to the facades and are quickly and easily xed on to
cast in channels using T bolts and special brackets.

Masonry walls are installed using special supports that are

xed on to cast in channels using T head bolts. A continuous
cast in channel on the concrete wall enables high adjustability
and enables quick installation of the masonry anchors. Cast in
channels cover the load capacity requirements for the masonry
facade installation.

Cast in channels are used for a variety of construction

applications which require attachments made on to concrete.
Pipe and duct installation and the installation of electrical wiring
are the most common applications that are made using cast in
channels.

The prefabricated concrete industry is among the fastest growing

elds within the construction industry. The use of cast in
channels enhance the fast and economical solutions that are
offered using prefabricated concrete panels. Speed and security
are the benets of using cast in channels.

to the length of the channel.

Loads applied towards the direction of

the channel. Longitudinal load capacity
is only available on toothed channels.

Installation Instruction

1.) Cast in channels are xed to form work after careful planning
and positioning. Concrete is then cast in to the form work.

2.) After the concrete is cured, the ller inside the channel, set
for the purpose of preventing concrete lling the channels slot,
is removed as shown.

3.) Connections to the cast in channels are made with T bolts and
lock nuts. T bolts are inserted in to the channels horizontally and
then turned right through 90 degrees. This locks them vertically
in the channel.

4.) Fixtures are fastened with the T bolts and nuts as shown above.
Correct loading and torque values need to be applied in
accordance with the allowable loads of the channels and bolts.

Euro code Concept

Partial vs Global Safety
Factors
The new DIN 1045-1:2008-08
standard has created the basis of
abandoning the Global Safety
factors and is leading towards a
common standard design concept
in Europe.
The change from allowable loads to
design resistance loads may cause
confusion when selecting xings.
When mistakes are made the choice
of xings is either 40 % over design
making it uneconomical because
the xings selected are too big or
40 % under design making it unsafe
because the loads applied are 40 %
higher then assumed.

Global Safety Factors

With the current Global safety factor concept, the allowable loads ( all. F) are determined for xings. Applied characteristic force loads (app. F)
are compared with the allowable loads. Allowable loads represent the nominal load capacity and is derived from test results which are then
divided by global safety factor ( gl ). The chosen xing is considered safe with the following condition:
Applied loads ( app. F ) Allowable loads ( all. F )

Partial Safety Factors

The design verication according to Euro code 2 for concrete and Euro code 3 for steel is taken into consideration during the design stage. The
applied loads ( app. F ) are factored with partial factors: for permanent actions 1.35 and for variable actions 1.5. The applied design forces
( FEd ) are compared with the Design resistance ( F Rd ). The design resistance is determined by dividing the characteristic resistance of the
xings with the partial material safety factors subsequently for concrete and steel. The chosen xing is considered safe with the following
condition:
Design Effect Load ( F Ed ) Design Resistance ( F Rd)
The new Euro code concept leads to achieving a more constant and reliable safety level by taking into account different inuences of load and
materials.
Design Effect Load ( F Ed ) = F * F ( F G * G + F Q * Q )

Allowable loads vs Design Resistance

In order to design xings according to the new Euro concept the, applied loads must be factored using partial safety factors to determine the
design loads ( F
FEd
Ed ). The design loads must be compared with the design resistance ( FFRd
Rd ) values of the products to be chosen. If the design
resistance values are not available and only allowable loads are available, the new design resistance values must be calculated. The partial
factor for actions here 1.4 is the weighted average of partial load safety factors 1.35 for permanent actions and 1.5 for variable actions. The
global safety factor remains safe with this equation.
Design Resistance ( FFRd
Rd ) = allowable loads ( all. F) * 1.4

HMPR Cast-in Channel - Reduced Edge Distances

Reduced Edge Distances for (ar) under pull out load
In instances when cast in channels are placed in thin walls or beams, it is possible to achieve 50 mm edge distance (ar) by transmitting the
loads with additional reinforcement into the concrete. The placing of the cast in channels and the additional reinforcement in the concrete
should be made as shown on the illustration below.
Pull out
Pull out

Pull out
ar > = 50 mm

Additional reinforcement for cast in channels 41/22 & 40/25

Additional reinforcement is required in the concrete to achieve edge distance (ar) of 75 mm for channels 41/21 & 40/25 when loading in
perpendicular direction to the edge of the concrete walls. The placing of the reinforcement around the channels should be made as shown on
the illustration below.

Shear

Additional reinforcement when the edge distance

of the cast in channel is 75 mm < or = ar < 100
mm and the load direction is perpendicular to
the edge of the component.

HMPR Cast-in Channel - Reduced Edge Distances

Reduced Edge Distances for (ae) with reduced load capacity
In instances when cast in channels are placed in narrow concrete walls, for example to columns; it is possible to achieve lower edge distance
(ae) by placing additional reinforcement into the concrete. Two additional links must be closely placed above and below the length of the
channels as shown on the illustration on the bottom right.

Anchors can be manufactured out of reinforcement studs for special applications, particularly xings in the edge of thin slabs. These channels
have higher pull out loads and combined loads. Due to these qualities these channels are preferred for use in the xing of curtain walls on to
reinforced concrete beams.

Channels with special fabricated elements

Special cast in channel manufacturing can be made according to the requirements of the project. Local testing as well as in house testing
can me made to safe check the load capacities of the special cast in channels.

HWT-M Wall Ties for Masonry & HBTR Brick tie channel Introduction
HWT-M Wall ties for masonry are
used for the safe and easy
connections of masonry blocks to
the wall through connections made
to cast in channels or surface xed
framing channels.

Embedded length
e
e

HWT-M type wall ties are designed

for restraint attachments of both
masonry wall facades and masonry
walls to load bearing concrete
walls. The sliding capability of the
ties along the length of the
channels decreases the risk of the
masonry cracking due to structure
movements.
The wall ties are inserted on the
channel at desired points and are
positioned by turning the ties 90
degrees clockwise. The perforated
holes in the wall ties allow mortar
lling to improve bonding.
Wall ties for masonry are available
in stainless steel EN 1.4301 &
1.4401.

cladding. A minimum embedded length of 50 mm
should be applied. The embedded length (e) is
determined by correctly setting the length of the
wall tie (L) and the masonry block width (d).

HBTR-25/15 Brick tie channels are

cold rolled pre-galvanized channels
that have punched lugs on the back
of the channels. This channel
provides the same loading
performance as the 28/15 and is an
economic option for use in
restraining brick walls on to
concrete.
Lugs are punched out every 250
mm and the channels are supplied
with a strip ller.

A debonding sleeve is used to cover

the wall ties before installation
which enables longitudinal
movement in the direction of the tie.
This is ideal when installing long
masonry walls to concrete walls or
when tying in large span inll walls
to oor slabs. Debonding sleeves
allow room for movement and
prevents any cracking of the
masonry walls.
