Muy breves reflexiones sobre las
matemticas y sus aplicaciones
En este artculo se hacen algunas muy breves reflexiones sobre
las matemticas y sus aplicaciones. Se trata de contribuir a
contestar la pregunta muy frecuente acerca de lo necesario o no
de las matemticas, principalmente en carreras de ingeniera,
ciencias sociales, ciencias naturales, etc.
1. La historia de la ciencia muestra claramente que muchas
teoras matemticas tuvieron como origen problemas
prcticos.

2. En la actualidad las matemticas han crecido mucho y se

puede hablar de matemticas puras, como la parte que
desarrolla teoras para resolver problemas e inventar
ms teora dentro de las propias matemticas.

3. Sin embargo es posible, tanto resolver un problema de

una teora matemtica ya existente, como crear una
nueva teora de un problema prctico. Tambin es
posible resolver un problema prctico de una teora
matemtica que haya permanecido como pura durante
muchos aos. La misma realidad muestra que toda
teora matemtica es candidata a ser usada para
resolver algn problemas prcticos.

Conclusiones

1. Por lo tanto, no es correcto preguntarse si una teora

matemtica sirve para algo o no. Sino ms bien, lo
correcto es resolver un problema prctico con alguna
teora matemtica considerando incluso aquellas que
han permanecido como puras hasta hoy.

2. No existen teoras matemticas que son tiles y otras

que no. Ms bien, algunas se han utilizado, y es un reto
usar aquellas que hasta hoy no lo hacen en problemas
prcticos.

3. En la actualidad las matemticas son usadas en muchas

reas del que-hacer humano, incluyendo la msica, el
arte, la criminologa, la poltica, etc. etc.

Aplicaciones de las matemticas

En seguida damos una muy breve lista de algunas de las reas
donde se aplica las matemticas. La pregunta no es dnde
se aplican las matemticas, sino ms bien, dnde an no
hay matemticas y entonces inventarlas!!! como parte
natural del pensamiento de la humanidad.

1.- Matemticas y Criptografa

La criptografa como el arte de escribir mensajes secretos, para
que solo las personas autorizadas puedas conocer el mensaje.
Se ha desarrollado a travz de la historia y desde sus inicios se
ha utilizado teora matemtica. La teora de nmeros es parte
inherente de la criptografa. A partir de la invencin del sistema
DH (Whitfield Diffie y Martin Hellman) y RSA (Rivest Shamir
Adleman) la teora de los campos finitos aparece en criptografa
y en los aos 80 las curvas elpticas e hiperelpticas son usadas.
Sin embargo muchas otras ramas de las matemticas son
usadas en criptografa como la combinatoria, la probabilidad, la
teora de retculas etc.

sociales. Las redes sociales en Internet han tomado el papel de
uno de los principales medios de comunicacin con nuevas
caractersticas. A las redes sociales se les atribuyen
movimientos sociales, movimientos culturales, movimientos de
rescate entre otros. Las redes sociales pueden ser analizadas a
partir de las matemticas. La teora de grficas aparecen como
bsicas en este campo.

Las finanzas de manera natural aparecen como una de las
disciplinas que hacen uso de las matemticas. Desde los

de prediccin de portafolios de inversin, comportamiento de la
bolsa de valores etc. La probabilidad, el movimiento browniano,
el anlisis, son parte de esta rea de estudio.

Los buscadores en Internet son una invaluable herramienta. No
cabe duda que uno de los mejores competidores de este tipo de
software es Google, este buscador ha tenido la caracterstica de
proveer a los internautas una simple y eficiente manera de
encontrar informacin que es por hoy una de las ms grandes
necesidades al navegar por Internet. El procedimiento para
encontrar informacin por Google hace uso de un algoritmo que
asigna la importancia de un sitio Web relacionado con la palabra
de bsqueda, este algoritmo se llama PageRank y usa
matemticas en su procedimiento, aunque de manera natural el
algoritmo se mejora da a da, el lgebra lineal, y la probabilidad
son bsicos de esta tecnologa.

5.- Matemticas en Sociologa y Psicologa

Las matemticas usadas en las ciencias de la sociologa y
psicologa son amplias. Es realmente un mundo de matemticas
la que los estudiosos de la psicologa. La probabilidad, el clculo,
los sistemas no lineales y caticos, las matemticas detrs de
los test psicolgicos, la teora de juegos son parte de estas
disciplinas.

6.- Matemticas en el combate al crimen

organizado

Sin duda uno de los principales problemas sociales que tenemos

en nuestros das es el crimen, desde pequeos grupos hasta
organizaciones grandes y peligrosas. Aunque las matemticas
han sido usadas en la guerra, desde los diseos del armamento
hasta la toma de decisiones, estratega de guerra etc. Es quiz
lo nuevo que a partir de los hechos del 11 de septiembre en
2001, diferentes grupos de investigacin han girado su atencin
a la aplicacin de las matemticas en la lucha contra el crimen
organizado. La teora de juegos, la probabilidad, la minera de
datos, el estudio de redes sociales, ecuaciones diferenciales,
modelos dinmicos, etc. han llegado a ser ramas importantes en
la esta nueva rea de las matemticas.

7.- Matemticas y el cubo de Rubik

Uno de los juguetes ms populares en el mundo es el cubo de
Rubick, desde los aos 80 ha permanecido como un juguete
mental favorito de alguna gente. En la actualidad existen nuevas
y diferentes versiones del cubo, pero en general la idea
fundamental ha prevalecido. Las matemticas del cubo de
Rubick pertenecen a la teora de grupos, principalmente el grupo
finito de permutaciones, diferentes propuestas para su
modelacin y solucin se han dado, incluso en diferentes grupos
como el grupo lineal GL(2,F_5).

8.- Matemticas y Msica

La msica como uno de los placeres emocionales del hombre, ha
existido desde los inicios de la humanidad. Sin duda la ciencia
matemtica tiene mucho que ver con la msica, con su creacin,
con su ejecucin y con su interpretacin. La serie de fibonacci, el
nmero ureo, fracciones continuas, las transformaciones de
Fourier, transformaciones lineales, transformada wavelet, etc
son parte del ritmo musical.

9.- El sexo de las Matemticas.

Uno de los debates del ltimo siglo se refiere al nmero de
mujeres que se dedican a las ciencias en particular a las
matemticas. Es indudable que en el mundo han existido
excelentes matemticas y que muchas de ellas son en mucho
ms inteligentes que los hombres, sin embargo muchos estudios
