PART 1
ROOM

The picture on the left shows a

model of the dining room in my
cookery school project and
demonstrates the view out of
its only window. The dining
room is meant to be the place
where both, the students and
the teachers, would gather
together to enjoy the food they
made during the day. Taking
this into account, I decided the
function of my windows should
be mainly to give a panoramic
view to the river and to
recreate the wonderful outside
atmosphere. As the students
are probably going to have
their classes in the early parts
of the day, I thought that the
dining room will be more used
later in the evenings, which is
why I used pictures taken

In contrast to the dining

room, in the kitchen, the
decision on the placing of
the windows was based
on more practical than
aesthetic
approach.
I
aimed for an evenly
distributed light across
the whole space, giving
each student appropriate
working conditions. There
are 2 series of 3 windows
each placed on opposite
walls, one of which is
facing the river and the
other the parking lot,
where all the food will be
delivered. There is more
panoramic
4m
long
window, showing a view
to the main entrance
path.

Although I was really

happy with the view
from the placement of
my window, the light
coming through is too
bright. It is way more
intense in half of the
room, than in the other
half which makes the
lighting uneven. Despite
that, there is no lack of
light in any part of the
room, which is one of the
positive aspects of this
particular design.

Taking into account the flaws that the

previous design had, I decreased the
height of the main window with 0.5m
and made it double glazed. I also
added 2 triple glazed roof lights with
bars above each rectangular table to
distribute the light more evenly around
the space. Even though the space is
more evenly lighted, the changes we
insufficient to reduce the brightness
due to the big window.

After the last changes, I reduced

the height of the panoramic
window even more, making it
0.5m, and the width to 4m. I also
placed it higher above the ground
1.5m from the floor (with
previous 0.8m). This resulted in
creating
an
even
lighting
throughout the whole dining area,
keeping a panoramic view (even
though not as impressive as the
original one) and having lux levels
around 100 to 400 in the whole
space. It can be concluded that
the design of the room has
improved from the rearrangement
of the glazing area. As this area is
going to be used mostly in the
evenings, I believe that this
amount of daylight is a proper
solution.

The position, the size and

the amount of glazing in the
kitchen provide enough light
in the working area, keeping
the rest of the room without
any bright light (there are
going to be food storage
shelves, which are better
kept out of direct sunlight).
On the other hand, the
windows might be way too
much, because they are
causing too much glare,
which may affect the quality
of work.
