Exercise 1: Lab Equipment & Safety and Test Set Basics Objective: The objective of this exercise is to familiarize the student with the lab and its equipment, raise the awareness of the safety hazards and safe procedures and learn the basics of operating the Doble relay test sets. After the exercise the student should be able to navigate the lab safely and efficiently, be able to control the test set manually for single and three phase voltages and currents and be able to use SEL-5030 AcSELerator QuickSet software to access SEL relay data. Pre-Lab Work: None. Lab Procedure: 1. As a group, walk through the lab and discuss the workings of the equipment and discuss safety issues including personal protective equipment requirements. 2. Start the computers and look at available software. 3. Review the instruction manual for the test sets a. Safe use b. Specifications including output capabilities for single and three phase voltages and currents. c. Manual control 4. Review the use of SEL-5030: AcSELerator software to communicate with SEL relays including use of the TERMINAL and the METER & CONTROL functions under TOOLS. The level 1 password is OTTER and the level 2 password is TAIL (case sensitive). 5. Test set operation: a. Connect the test set to the SEL-311L relay for 3-phase current and voltage per Figure 1-1. b. Use SEL-5030 AcSELerator QuickSet to communicate with the SEL311L relay. Set the CT ratio (CTR) to 1 and the PT ratio (PTR) to 1000. c. Adjust test set output as follows: Channel Magnitude Angle VA 66 volts 0 VB 66 volts -120 VC 66 volts 120 IA 1 amp -30 IB 2 amp -150 IC 3 amp 90 d. Use SEL-5030 AcSELerator QuickSet METER & CONTROL features to view the magnitude and angle of the currents and voltages (currents read correctly and voltages are scaled to kV). Verify that the relay measurements (magnitude and angle) match the test set settings. e. Use SEL-5030 AcSELerator QuickSet METER & CONTROL features to view the phasor representation of the currents and voltages. f. Adjust the output of each test set channel up and down and verify that the relay measurements agree (do not exceed relay continuous input ratings).

Exercise 1: Lab Equipment & Safety and Test Set Basics g. Reconnect the test set for single phase operation per Figure 1-2. h. Adjust test set output as follows: Channel Magnitude Angle VA 66 volts 0 VB 66 volts -120 VC 66 volts +120 IA 1 amp -45 IB 1 amp -45 IC 1 amp -45 i. Use SEL-5030 AcSELerator QuickSet METER & CONTROL features to view the magnitude and angle of the currents and voltages. Verify that the relay measurements show IA = 3 amps. 6. Post-Lab Work: a. Attach print-outs of the metering screens from SEL-5030 AcSELerator QuickSet in 5.d, 5.e and 5.i above. b. In 5.h above, the outputs of the current channels were paralleled. What is the maximum current output capability of the test set in this mode? _____________________________________ c. Why is it important to ground the current and voltage outputs of the test set? ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________
