Overview: In this lesson the children are going to plan, design and

build a Lego WeDo product using either the motion of the tilt sensor.
National curriculum link: Use sequence, selection and repetition in
programs, work with variables and various forms of input and output.
Learning objective:
We are learning to plan a Lego WeDo product using the tilt or motion
sensor.
We are learning to build a Lego WeDo product using the tilt or motion
sensor.
Success criteria:
All: I am able to plan and begin to build a Lego WeDo product with adult
support.
Most: I am able to plan and begin to build a Lego WeDo product.
Some: I am confidently able to plan and begin to build a Lego WeDo
product using various components and algorithms.
Key words: Input, output, Lego WeDo, algorithm, motion, control,
sound, tilt, sensor, motor
Key questions: Will you be using the motion or tilt sensor in your
model? How will your model work?

LegoWeDo
Proforma to design Lego WeDo model
Starter
The children will be asked if they can remember what they learnt last
lesson, and will get into talk partners to share ideas.
They will then feedback their ideas and these will be mindmapped on
the board for the class to see.
The components of Lego WeDo will be recapped first by asking children
to discuss in talk partners and then feeding back what they can
remember, if necessary the children will be reminded what these look
like and what they can do, as well as recapping the actions motion, tilt
and motion
New learning
The proforma sheet will be modelled for the Lego WeDo plan - how to fill
in each box, things to think about (input, output, sensors and how they

work)
Main
The children will work individually through planning their Lego WeDo
products - helping each other with any problems which might arise.
The children will then show and tell their ideas, helping those who are
less clear on their ideas, and allowing them time to discuss what
components they will be using and how it will work, allowing us to
assess their understanding
After the break, the children will begin to build and work with the Lego
WeDo products to build their plans, the children be given the opportunity
to work alone or in pairs to do this
Plenary
The children will then show and tell their work, discussing what they
have made, what components of Lego WeDo used and demonstrating
how it works.
If necessary the children will continue making their models next week.
Evaluation
+ Very practical lesson, allowing children to experiment with designing
and making their products.
+ This lesson developed the childrens 21st century skills affectively,
particularly communication and collaboration as it involved a lot of this
type of learning.
- Some children worked better on their own and working together meant
it was harder to assess individual childrens learning.
- Some children chose to plan alone, which they often found challenging,
meaning they needed more adult support.
