students, and introduce book. Hold
book up for students to see.
Narration: Good afternoon students
and welcome. My name is Mrs.
Thornton and I would like to
introduce a book that was a favorite
of my son when he was your age,
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.
Camera Position: Medium distance
covers teacher and students.

Slide 2
Action: Open book to front page and
talk about the publisher and date of
publication.
Narration: This book was published
by Harper and Row Publisher in 1964
and it has been one of the top 100
books to read for many years. It is a
story about the love of a tree for a
little boy just like you guys. Some
words to describe this book would be
unconditional love and sacrifice for
that love.
Camera: Focus of boys and the book
with slide in the back ground.
Medium position.

Slide 3 The Hook


Action: Hold book up so that the
cover is visible to the students.
Narration: When you hear and look
at the title, I bet you are wondering
what a tree can give to a boy. Lets
brainstorm and see if you can guess
some things a tree could give a boy
she loves.
Student Lines: Apples, wood, shade
Camera: Focus up close to the book
and the boys. Storm slide in
background
Slide 4
Action: Read lines from the book.
Pages 1-10. Cut.
Narration: Ok you guys lets read the
book and see what will
happenOnce there was a treeand
she loved a little boy. And every day
the boy would come and he would
play in her leaves and make them
into crowns and play king of the
forest.
Camera: Show pictures as I read and
have painting in the background.

Camera: Pan the students return
back to teacher.
Narration: As you read the book look
and see what the tree gives the boy
all because of love. This fable can
have many meanings; I wonder what
it will mean to you?
