ASSIGNMENT 2
To be submitted by 26.01.2015 (Only hand written and hand drawn figures)
______________________________________________________________________________
1. Describe the working theory/principle of the following and draw schematic diagram of each.
i) Rotameter
ii) Venturi meter
iii) Orifice meter
iv) Different types of valves such as Gate Valve, Globe Valve, Butterfly Valve, Needle Valve,
etc.
2. Describe the working theory/principle of the following and draw schematic diagram of each.
i) Air release valve
ii) Foot valve
iii) Cycle tube valve
3. Water is flowing through a reducer at the rate of 0.05 cu.m/s. What is the difference in
pressure measured by the manometer? (Neglect friction)

4. A ladle of radius 2 m has a metal up to a height of 2m from the bottom. At the bottom, the
ladle has a nozzle for pouring (teeming) with a diameter of 0.1m. Neglecting friction losses,
estimate the velocity of the stream at the nozzle exit. Estimate the time to empty the ladle. Note:
Generally, the nozzle at the bottom of the ladle is positioned off center (eccentric). Discuss. How
the flow is regulated, for example, in a ladle during continuous casting?
5. In a lab where experiments with some volatile chemicals are being performed, the safety
inspector recommended that in one second atleast 1 cubic meter of air needs to be thrown out
using an exhaust fan. Subsequently, your professor asked you to purchase a suitable exhaust fan
from the market. There is an already circular whole in the wall of the lab of diameter 0.3 m

where one can fix the exhaust fan. Approximately, the efficiency of exhaust fans available in the
market is 30.the approximate wattage of the exhaust fan you need to purchase.
6. A vacuum cleaner is capable of creating a vacuum of 2 kPa just inside the hose as shown in
figure. What is the maximum average velocity would be expected in the hose?

7. Determine the power output of the turbine shown in figure for a water flow rate of 0.6 m3/s

8. A water pump has one inlet and two outlets as shown in the figure, all at the same elevation.
What pump power is required if the pump is 85% efficient? Neglect pipe losses.

9. Streamline trains. Forest Grove, Oregon, has a museum- a railroad musuem- and with your
admission ticket you get a free ride around their private track on either an old 1810 puffer or a
streamliner of the 1950 era which was designed to speed at 160 km/hr.

To measure the speed of the streamliner we attach a pressure measuring device at the very front
of the engine, at the stagnation point for the flowing air. We then measure the pressure when the
train is moving and when it is standing still. We find
i) On a nice sunny 25C day we get a pressure reading of p=102750 Pa when the streamliner
is not moving, and
ii) When the steamliner is travelling at its musuem top speed along the straightaway we find
p=102760 Pa.
How fast is the train barreling along?
