This month I want to call the attention of our congregation to two educational
events that I hope will be of interest to many. These are (a) our special Lenten
series on biblical and theological reasons to be environmentally responsible and
(b) a special adult Sunday school class on homosexuality and the Bible.
Inhabiting Eden. Beginning on the first Sunday in Lent (February 22), the church will offer evening programs based on Dr. Patricia K. Tulls book, Inhabiting Eden: Christians, the Bible, and the
Ecological Crisis. Dr. Tull (Trisha) was my teacher at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, where she was a professor of Old Testament. In 2010 she retired early from regular
teaching in order to devote herself more fully to scholarly writing and other pursuits. She is
married to Rev. Don Summerfield, who is the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Jeffersonville, Indiana, one of our sister churches in the Presbytery of Ohio Valley. Dr. Tull also
serves as Affiliate Developer for Hoosier Interfaith Power and Light, the Indiana chapter of a
national organization of religious congregations committed to the promotion of energy conservation, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. Dr. Tull will be our guest preacher in morning
worship on Sunday, February 22; and then she will lead the first of our Lenten programs that
evening. The program will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a simple supper, followed by Dr. Tulls
presentation of the first portion of her book, Inhabiting Eden. Subsequent programs, also based
on the book, will be led by church members and staff and will conclude with a final program on
Palm Sunday evening (March 29). Dr. Tull is an engaging speaker, and you will be amazed at the
environmental messages she discovers in the Bible. Her book is very readable and is thoughtprovoking. These will be good programs, well worth your attention.
Homosexuality. Its no secret that the issue of homosexuality has roiled our Presbyterian denomination for decades. We at Central Presbyterian have not focused on the issue. We are
not a contentious congregation, and folks seem willing to live with the reality that there are
many points of view within our membership. Indeed, I have offered in the past to teach on this
topic; but the session felt at the time that no such class was needed. However, changing circumstances have caused the session to reconsider. First, our denomination has opened the door a
crack to the possibility of ordaining gay and lesbian elders and deacons, and to same-sex marriage. Also, while until recently same-sex marriage was illegal in Indiana, that prohibition was
ruled unconstitutional last October. In light of these developments and others, the session reconsidered and have asked me to provide some kind of educational offering on the topic. I have
consulted with Cheryl Moles about setting and format, and we have decided the best way to do
this would be to combine the adult Sunday school classes for a short two- or three-Sunday series. I will be the teacher, and I commit to do my very best to present fairly the strengths and
weaknesses of the main arguments for and against the ordination of homosexuals in the church
and for and against same-sex marriage. The purpose of these classes will educational only; that
is, no action will be called for. The class will meet on the north side of Fellowship Hall at the
normal Sunday-school time (9:30 a.m.) on the following Sundays: February 8, February 15, and, if
interest remains strong, on February 22.
