ORDER OF SERVICE
Antiphon: O Sapientia
O Wisdom, which camest out of the mouth of the Most High,
and reachest from one end to another, mightily and sweetly
ordering all things: Come and teach us the way of prudence.
PROCESSIONAL HYMN
O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny
From depths of hell thy people save
And give them victory o'er the grave
O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer
Our spirits by thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
O come, thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
O come, O come, thou Lord of might,
Who to thy tribes, on Sinai's height,
In ancient times didst give the Law,
In cloud, and majesty and awe.
Words: Advent Antiphons trans. J.M. Neale
Tune: Veni Emmanuel (adapted from a French Missal
by Thomas Helmore)
this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. And when the LORD saw that
he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush,
and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. And he said, Draw not
nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon
thou standest is holy ground. Moreover he said, I am the God of thy
father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And
Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
Antiphon: O Adonai
O Adonai, and Leader of the house of Israel, who appearest in
the bush to Moses in a flame of fire, and gavest him the Law in
Sinai: Come and deliver us with an outstretched arm.
HYMN:
Come, Thou long-expected Jesus,
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israels Strength and Consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Dear Desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.
Born Thy people to deliver;
Born a child and yet a King,
Born to reign in us for ever,
Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.
By Thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By Thine all-sufficient merit,
Raise us to Thy glorious throne.

Tune: Cross of Jesus (John Stainer)
Isaiah 11: 1-4, 10 Gods Spirit upon him who is to come from the root of Jesse.
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch
shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon
him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and
might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; And shall
make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall
not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of
his ears: But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove
with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with
the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the
wicked. And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand
for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall
be glorious.
Antiphon: O Radix Jesse
O Root of Jesse, which standest for an ensign of the people, at
whom kings shall shut their mouths, to whom the Gentiles shall
seek: Come and deliver us, and tarry not.
Anthem: Virga Jesse
The rod of Jesse hath blossomed: a Virgin hath brought forth
God and man: God hath restored peace, reconciling in Himself
the lowest with the highest. Alleluia.
Music: Anton Bruckner
Antiphon: O Oriens
O Radiant Dawn, splendour of eternal light, sun of justice:
come, shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of
death. Isaiah had prophesied, The people who walked in
darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the
land of gloom a light has shown.
Music: James Macmillan
Isaiah 41:25, 42:1-7 The announcement of Gods Servant and his work to come.
I have raised up one from the north, and he shall come: from the rising of
the sun shall he call upon my name: and he shall come upon princes as
upon morter, and as the potter treadeth clay. Behold my servant, whom I
uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit
upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not cry,
nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed
shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall
bring forth judgment unto truth. He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till
he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.
Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched
them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it;
he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that
walk therein: I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold
thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the
people, for a light of the Gentiles; To open the blind eyes, to bring out the
prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison
house.
Antiphon: O Rex Gentium
O King of the Nations, and their desire; the Corner-stone, who
makest both one: Come and save mankind, whom thou
formedst of clay.
Isaiah 62: 1-5 The assurance of the Son of God's love, under all difficulties.
For Zion's sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake I will
not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the
salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth. And the Gentiles shall see thy
righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new
name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name. Thou shalt also be a
crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand
of thy God. Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy
land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah,
and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall
be married. For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons
marry thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy
God rejoice over thee.
Antiphon: O Emmanuel.
O Emmanuel, our King and Lawgiver, hope of all nations, and
their Saviour: Come and save us, O Lord our God.
Music: John Stainer
HYMN:
Lo! he comes with clouds descending,
Once for favoured sinners slain;
Thousand thousand saints attending
Swell the triumph of his train:
Alleluya!
God appears, on earth to reign.
Every eye shall now behold him
Robed in dreadful majesty;
Those who set at nought and sold him,
Pierced and nailed him to the tree,
Deeply wailing
Shall the true Messiah see.
Those dear tokens of his passion
Still his dazzling body bears,
Cause of endless exultation
To his ransomed worshippers:
Alleluya!
See! the day of God appears.
Yea, Amen! let all adore thee,
High on thine eternal throne;
Saviour, take the power and glory:
Claim the kingdom for thine own:
O come quickly
Alleluya!
Come, Lord, come!
Words: Charles Wesley
Tune: Helmsley (noted by T. Olivers)
