David Buchbinder presents a Unique Performance Event

Featuring The Flying Bulgars /Bruce McDonald /Andrea Nann /Lorenzo Savoini/
Alana Bridgewater /Richard Underhill /John Millard

Longtime Canadian World music mainstays the Flying Bulgars (formerly The Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band)
have made a career of creating original music from within the warm embrace of the Jewish/Klezmer
sound. Dancing at the margins of tradition and innovation, they sometimes leaned one way, sometimes
the other. Now, with a completely new set of songs in English, a new CD and music video, (all with
influences as diverse as Leonard Cohen, Rufus Wainwright, Lhasa, twisted Circus music, Tom Waits,
European Art song, traditional Yiddish music, Gil Evans, certain kinds of jazz/rock, cabaret and more) a
new name and a new genre (no longer a Klezmer band) they have taken their biggest step ever into the
unknown. Tumbling Into Light, the result of a three year development and recording process, is simply
unlike anything youʼve heard from them before. The music plunges through darkness, anger, confusion,
tenderness, astringent humour sliding into celebration, eyes raised to the horizon, hope, and finally, tumbling
head over heels into light.

“...a wild and inspiring batch of beautifully crafted, beautifully played tunes. What's more, the Bulgars
have created their own genre (pop/klezmer agitprop?)!” -Jason Collett, singer-songwriter

Now they take their game to a whole new level with the concert event Tumbling Into Light as they expand
the music of David Buchbinder and Dave Wall with a multimedia performance extravaganza. In order to
realize Buchbinderʼs vision they've assembled the crack creative team of choreographer Andrea Nann,
filmmaker Bruce McDonald (who also helmed the Bulgarsʼ music video that will receive its release on
Bravo! In early January), designer Lorenzo Savoini and musical guests Alana Bridgewater, Richard Underhill
and John Millard.

Together they have developed a song-centered, all-encompassing theatrical world that will take
audiences to the heart of the journey through the darkness of our times to a new illumination. While this is
certainly a unique concert, Tumbling Into Light also represents a return to the spirit of Shurum Burum Jazz
Circus, Buchbinderʼs successful 2005 multidisciplinary show that entranced sold-out audiences with its
blend of adventurous jazz and scintillating Circus and dance.

The Flying Bulgars are: David Buchbinder (trumpet and flugelhorn), Dave Wall (vocals), Peter Lutek
(clarinet & saxophones), Tania Gill (piano and keys), Victor Bateman (bass) and Max Senitt (drums).
The new CD is produced by Canadian indie-rock hero Dave Newfeld (Broken Social Scene, Apostle of
Hustle, Metric, Mean Red Spiders, etc.)
