American
National
Standard

Approval oi an American National Standard requires venfication by ANSI that the

requirements for due process, consensus and other entena for approval have been met
by the standards developer.
Consensus is established when, in the judgement of the ANS 1 Board of Standards Review,
substantlal agreement has been reached by directly and materially atfected interests.
Substanhal agreement means much more than a simple majority, but not necessanly
unan1m1ty. Consensus reqwes that all views and objections be consdered. and that a
concened eHon be made toward their resolution.
The use of Amencan National Siandards is completely voluntary; ther ex1stence does
not in any respect preclude anyone, whether he has approved the standards or not, from
manuiactunng, marketing, purchasing, or using products, processes, or procedures not
conformmg lo the standards.
The Amencan Nat1onal Standards lnstitute does not develoo standards and will in no
circumstances give an interpretat1on of any Amencan National Standard. Moveover, no
person shall have the right or authonty to issue an mterpretation of an Amencan Na!lOna!
Standard in the name ot the American National Standards lnstitute. Requests for
interpretallons should be addressed to the secretaria! or sponsor whose name appears
on the tille page oi t~.is standard.
CAUTION NOTICE: This Arrencan National Standard may be revised or withdrawn at
any time. The procedures of the American National Standards lnstitute reouire that action
be taken periodically to reaffirm, revise, or wllhdraw this standard. Purchasers of

Foreword (Not part of Standard)

Purpose and aims of the Hydraulic lnstitute
The purpose and aims oi the lnstitute are to promete the cominued growth and wellbeing of pump manufacturers and further the interests of the public in such matters
as are mvolved in manuacturing, engineering, distribution, safety, transportation
and other problems of the industry, and to this end, among other things:
a. To develop and publish standards for pumps;
b. To collect and dissemmate informalion of val u e to its members and lo the public;
c. To aopear for its memoers befare governmental departments and agencies
and other bodies in regara to matters affecting the induslry;
d. To in crease the amount and to improve the quality of pump serv~ce lo the public;
e. To suoport educattonal and research activities;

t. To promete the bustness 1nterests of its members but not to engage in bustness
of the kind ordinanly carned on for profit or to perform particular serv1ces for its
members or individual persons as disnnguished from activ1ties to improve the
busmess condlhons and lawful interests of all of its members.
Purpose of Standards
1. Hydraufic lnstltute Standards are adoptad in the public tnterest and are
aestgned to heip ellm1nate m1sunderstandings between t~.e manufacturar. the
purchaser and/or the user and to assist the purchaser in selechng and obta1ning
the proper product tor a particular need.
2. Use of Hydraulic lnstitute Standards is completely voluntary. Ex1stence of
Hydraulic lnstitute Standards aoes no1 in any resper.t preclude a member from
manufactunng or selling products not conformtng to 1he Standards.
Definition of a Standard of the Hydraulic lnstitute
Ouotmg from Article XV. Standards. of the By-Laws of the lnstitute, Section B:
An lnst1tute Standard defines the product. material, process or procedure with
reierence lo one or more of the followmg: nomenclatura. composition. construction,
dimens1ons. tolerances. safety, operating charactens!lcs, pertormance, quality,
rating, testtng and service for which designed."
Comments from users
Comments from users of th1s Standard w111 be appreciated. to help the Hydraulic
lnst1tute prepare even more useful future editions. Ouestions ansing from the
content of this Standard may be directed to the Hydraulic tnstJtute. 11 wlli direct all
such questions to the appropnate technical comm1ttee for provision of a suitable
answer.
lf a dispute ansas regarding contents of an lnstitute publication or an answer
provided by the lnstitute toa question such as mdicated above , the point in question
snall be referred to the Executive Committee of the Hydraulic lnstitute. wh1ch then
shall act as a Board of Appeals.

Revisions
The Standards of !he Hydraulic lnstitute are subject to review, and revisions are
undertaken whenever it is found necessary because of new developments and
progress in the art.
Seo pe
This Standard is for vertical diffuser type centnfugal pumps. lt includes detailed
procedures on the setup ano conduct o hydrostatic ano periormance tests of such
pumps.
Severa! methodologies te test centrifuga! and vertical pump equipment are available
to pump manufacturers. users and other interested part1es. The United States has
two sets of pump test Standards which represent two approaches to conducting and
evatuat1ng pump performance. One, promulgated by the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and designated PTC 8.2, Centnfugal Pumps,
provides ter two levels of tests and is based on a detailed precedure that produces
resutts el a low leve! oi uncertainty. The other, promutgated by the Hydraulic lnstitute
(HI), designated Hl 1.6, Centnfugat Pump Tests and Hl 2.6, Vertical Pump Tests,
also previdas for two levels of test 1n which the test procedures are tess restrictiva.
The ASME Cede relies en the parties te the test to agree beforehand on the Scepe
and Cenduct of the test and does not spec1iy how the test results shall be used te
compare w1th guarantee. The ASME is esoecially su1ted lo highly detailed pump
testlng, whereas Hl Standards de!a1l test scepe, conduct and acceotance entena,
and are thus suited to commercial test practicas. ASME Cedes do not permit the
use of acceptability tolerances in reporting resutts, while the Hl Standards do. lt is
recommended that the specifier of tne test standard become fam1liar wtth both the
ASME Code and the Hl Stanaards befare selecting the ene best suited for tne
equpment to be tested, s1nce there are a number of other d1ferences between the
two whicn may aifect accuracy or cost o the tests.
8oth the ASME and Hl Standards can oe used for testing in either field or iactery
1nstallations. The detailed requirements ef the ASME test Code are 1ntended to
reduce the effect of vanous installation auangements on performance results and
are applied more to field tesung. The Hl Standard spec1ies test p1pmg and more
controllable conditions. wh1ch is more su1table te factory tesung. The H 1 Standards
do not address field testing. Surveys nave shown lhat both ASME and Hl Standards
have oeen apolied successfully te applications from small chemical pumps (1 hp)
te large utility pumps (over 5000 hp).
Units ot Meas urem ent
US Cus10mary u01ts ot measurement are predom1nantly used. and, where ao
preonate, Metnc unJ! eauivalents appear in brackets tollowmg the US units. Sample
calculations are shown w1th US unlts only.

Test at non-rated speed

Test of futl -sized pumps al reduced

For reduced-speed tests, the retative power loss

beanngs and stuffing box friction may be
greater, and the hyd raulic friction losses may also
be relatively larger due to reoucllon in the
Reynolds number. This effect may be significan!
in small pumps. These factors must, theretore. be
cons1dered in determming an acceptable speed,
which should be mutually agreed upon prior to
testing.
tn

This is pump efficiency reduced by losses such

as, but not limited to, dnverlosses including thrust
bearing losses and gear losses where appficable.
'lo = 'lP x dnver eftciency x gear efficiency
less efficiency loss from thrust beanng (il applicable).
For calculation purposes, all efiiciency values
must be in dectmal form.
Verttcal motor efficiencies generally do not inelude thrust bearing losses due to thrust load.

Tempera!ure variations

Variations in temperatura of the liquid pumped

cause changes in specfic we1ght and viscoslty .
with resu ltan! changes in pump perormance.

A reduction in speci fic weight, as caused by an

increase in temperatura, results in a directly
proportional reduction in output power (see Paragraph 2.6.3.13 Power) and in input power; therefore, the efficiency is not changed.
Reduced viscosity ot water due to a temperatura
increase Wlll impact efficency. For pumps in the
lower range of specific speed, typically below
1500, reduced viscosity will:

Note that spec1fic speed is a pump characteristic

2.6.5.10.2 Test o f ful l-size d pumps at increased speed
Under unusual circumstances, it may be
desrable to carry out tests at higher speeds than
specilied for the installallon. This may be due, for
example, !o the limitations of avaifable pnme
movers or correct efectncal frequency. In ths
case. if such tests do not exceed sale operating
lim1ts of the pump, all of the above considerations
apply.
Cases may arise in which the limtations oi the
fac:ory test facilities may preclude establishing
the requlfed sucllon lift to comply w1th the onstallation NPSH. In such cases, the desired NPSHR
can be obtained by increasong the speed and the

Capacity measurement by volume

This is done by measuring the change in volume

ot a tan k or reservoir dunng a measured penod of
t1me. The tank or reservoir can be located on the
inlet or discharge side oi the pump, and all flow
into or out of the tank or reservoir must pass
through the pump.
In establishing reservoir volume by linear measurements. considerations shall oe given to the

In some locations and under some circumstances, evaporahon ano loss of liqUid by spray may
be significan! and may be greater than the effects
ot thermal expansion or contraction. Allowance
must be made tor su eh loss or the loss prevented .
2.6.7.4 Capacity measurement by head type
ra te meters

This is done by introducing a reduced area in the

tlow stream. which results in a reducuon m gauge
head as the vetocity is increased. The gauge head
diiierential is measured and used to determ ine
the capacty. The meters discussed in Paragraphs 2.6.7.4.1, 2.6.7.4.2 and 2.6.7.4.3 use this
pnnciple.
Mete rs talling within this classtfication, and ac

standard, when used as prescribed herein, are
ventuns, nozzles and oriiice plates.
For any such meter. compliance with this stand

calibrat1on of the meter shall be obtained from the

the method used in calibratton and whether the
meter 1tsetf was calibrated, or whether calibration
was obtained lrom an exact duplicate.
When a llow meter is used on the discharge, it is
preferable to mstall it in the high-pressure sect1on

Capacity measurement by pitot tubes

A p1tot tube is a double tube. one within the other.

Capacity is measured by tnsening the tube so that

it points 1nto the tlow stream. The tnner tube
measures the veloctty head and gauge head oi
the liquid, and the outer tube w1th notes in the
outer wall meas ures gauge head only. The head
diiferentlal is measured and used w determine
the the velocity head which in turn determtnes
capactty.
Where it is imposstble to employ ene of the
metnods described above. the puot tube is often
used. When the tiow conditions are steady durir.g

For such meters, compliance with this standard
requires that a certified cuNe showing the calibration of the meter must be obtatned. Thts certifica

wnether the meter itself was calibrated, or
whether calibration was obtained from an exact

The edges ot the opening shall be provided with
a sUitable radius tangential to the wafl ol the water
passage and shall be free from burrs er irregulanties. Figures 2.68 and 2.69 show sug

Calibrated electric motors, along with calibrated

tween the controls and the termmals.

2.6.1 O

For the proper application of the electrical power

552.
Calibrated electric motors shall have efliciency
determinad by the methods outlined in the latest

- Standard Test Procedures for Polyphase
Jnductton Morors and Generators, ANSI/IEEE
112- 1992;

Cert1ied calibrauon shall be conducted on the

spec1fic motor 1n question and r.ot on a similar
machrne. Motor thrust beanng losses under ac
tu al load are typically not included in the calibraHan. These losses must, there lore, be deducted
from the motor power input to arnve at the true
pump's elliciency when perlormance testing.
For non-calibrated motors, the etticiency may be
determ1ned by the segregated losses methods
(see Standards ANSI/IEEE 112, 113, and 115), i
mutually agreed upon pnor to the test.
When submers1ble puma power measurements
are taken, the power loss through the electrical

When laboratory test1ng pumps designad to pump

liqutds lighter than the laboratory liquid. typ1cally

as well as the increased pressure.

28

Methods of rotary speed measurement

Test speeds lor centnfugal pumps may be in the

range oi a l ew hundred to thousands ot revolu
tions per mmute. Since the pump test data will be
taken under steady state condttions, the maxi
mum permiss1ble shorHerm speed fluctuation
shall be no more than 0.3%. The instruments shall
also be capable of measunng speed wtth an accuracy of .3% . The soeea measuring methods
described. therelore, are those which. at
moderate speeds, will give a measure ol the
average speed over an tnterval o from less than
one second up to two m1nutes, depend ing on the
type ol instrumentation.
NOTE - The various methods and inslrumenlalton
are discussed in detatl in lnstruments ancf Apparatus Pan 13. Measuremem of Rotary Speed
1961, PTC 19. 13.

The revolution counter and timer method, as its

name implies. involves the counting oi the num
ber of revolutions over an interval of time. A majar
source ol error is inexact synchror1=ator 11
counter and timer. In cases where this S et;t 'n<.t
tC (e.g. , digital tachometers). accur?. ~ Y os
ach1eved over a time interval al a few seconds . In
the case where a hand held counter and stap
watch are used. the ttm1ng interval snoulo be
about two minutes. Dunng this time, the speed
must be constan!, and sl ippage of the counter on
the shaft must be avoided. The stopwatch shall
be periodically cnecked against a standard timer.
Tachometers provide a direct reading of soeed
averaged over a fixed time interval. Sorne types
automatically repeat the reading process; hand
held units must be reset manually. The above
comments regarding uniform speed and sliopage
pena1n here also. A tachometer shall be checked
perioically against a counter and stopwatch.
Frequencyresponsive devices have the ad
vantage ol not requiring direct contact with the
motor or pump shaft and hence impose no addi
tional load on the motor. The vibrating reed type
is oi use only when the shait is completely mac
cessible. Electronic untts may be converted to
read rpm directly us1ng a shaft mounted gear ano
a non-contact1ng magnet1c pickup. Since normal
ly the line lrequency (which determmes the timmg

Hl Vertical Pump Test- 1994

interval) is 60 Hz "' 0.1 percent. the method is
accurate to the nearest rpm, as read on a digital
readout. Tne hming interval may be set as short
as 0.1 second, thus making any speed fluctua
tions readily discernible.
Most stroboscopes are limtted in accuracy dueto
uncertainry in the prec1sion of the strobe frequen
cy. The only approach suitable ior pump test
purposes is to use the strobe to determine motor
slip under load retative to synchronous soeed.
using a stopwatch to time the slippage while drov
ing the strobe at line frequency (which is known
to the accuracy given above and can be deter
mined with even grearer precision for the time and

Model tests
Procedure

In many installations involving units of large size.

model tests are of great utility. E ven when it mignt
be feasb'e to test the large unit in the factory, a
model may often be tested wirh greater accuracy
and thoroughness. By adophng a standard size oi
'11odel for various pumps, comparable perorman
ces can be obta.ned. The model impeller should
be not less than 12 inches (300 mm) out.sde
d1ameter. The exact modeHoprototype ratio
shall be selected by the butlder. Comparisons
between model tests are valid only when all
dimensions o! the model hydraulic passages to
prototype are in accordance w1th the modeHo
prototype ratio.
Testing models in advance of final oes1gn ano
installation of a large untt not only provides ad

vanee assurance o! performance but makes al

terations oossible in time for incorporation into the
prototype unit.
Not all installations lend themselves to a practica!
model invesugation. The pumpmg of water carry
ing considerable quantities of sand or other
foreign material is not readily reproduced in model
operation. This standard, therefore, is limited to
the pumping of clear water, free irom abnormal
quantities of air or solids, both in field installaton
and factory tests . The effects of wear and
deterioration, the eifects oi free surface distur
bances in open channel sumps, interterence be
tween neighboring un1ts, and peculiar problems
caused by abnormal settings are covered by
modal sump tests.
The model hydraulic passages should ha ve com
plete geometnc similanty w1th the prototype, not
only in the pump proper, but also in the intake ano
d1scharge conduits, as specified above for tests
on fullsized pumps. lf cavitation tests are not
available, the NPSHA should be such as to g1ve
the same suction spec1fic speed as the prototype.
.A.s previously explained. , the prototype NPSHR
is known to be safely oelow the NPSHA, then a
higher NPSHA can be used for the model tests.
although it is preferable to maintain the same
val u e.
There is danger of air separation c!estroy1ng
smlarity relationships if the absoluta pressure is
educed too low. Consequently, condensate
pumps should not be modeled.

11 correspond ing diameters of model and

prototype are D 1 and D2 respectively, then tne

pump 1s too large for a factory test and, in place
of such test on the actual pump, a moa el s to be
testad at a reduced head of 320 feet. The model
1mpeller is to be t8 tnches (0.457 m) in dameter.

Therefore, the spec1fic speeds are the same as

Purpose
This documem describes the general work instructions for final inspection. production
test. This includes performance testing of vertical turbines. and hydro testing of al!
associmed componems.

2.0

Scope
This procedure applies to all sizes and models of vertical turbine pumps manufactured at
rhe Turbine Di vision. Ir applies ro all producrion pumps that has a customer spccitied resr,
(eithcr performance test or hydro test). Ir also applies ro deve lopmenr pumps that ha ve not
been released to production.

3.0

Responsibilities
Te!>l Technician: Responsible for performing the test w the test bill requiremenrs for the
unu, supervising assembling the um~ and componeniS with the correct test fixrures.
performing the tesL recording tbe tC5t data. and provid.ing print outS of tbe final tests for
cerrification.
En gineering Manager: Responsible for certifying test data, or assigning someone eo
certify the resr data, and the implememation and maimenance of this procedure.

4.0

lnstructions- Production Performance Test- Linesbaft Turbine

4.0.1 The pump is deiivered ro the test iab with a S.O. number attacbed asan identitier.
The technician pulls the test bill (EN.F009), with the matching number. From this
informauon the column. sbaft. head slZe. the motor size. test line. running RPM's and any
other serup requirementS can be detemuned.

4.3

lnstructions ~- ~roduction Hydro Test- Pump Components

4.3.1 Pumps rhat are 14"' and larger, any fabricated components and ocher pieces, will
not be tested as assembled units. The componems sbould be delivered to tbe test lab with
a S.O. number auached asan identifier. The technician pu!ls the test bill (EN.F009). with
the matching number. From this information the pressure requiremcnrs and sctup fixtures
can be determined.
4.3.2 The technician wilJ now determine the best way to hydro tests tbe components.
su eh as how many to bolt together for one test setup. and where che valve, for a ir 10
escape, slwuld be located. The correct ftxture. with o-rings or gaskets. for each end of the
components should be bo!ted in place on each end.
~.3.3

The pressure hose sbould now be attached to tbe fitting on the fixture and the
val ve opened so that the air can escape.
4.3.4 The pressure pump shou!d now be tumcd on and the enclosed componenrs fil!ed
with water. When the water comes out of the open val ve at the top of the componems, the
valve shou!d be shut.
~.3.5

The components are now ready to hydro test. Use al! safety prccaurions when
testing. Tu m the pressure pump up ro the required test pressure leve!. and hold for a
mnimum oj5 minutes. or the required arnoum of time stated on the test bi!!. VisuaJ!y
inspect rhe castings for leaks, and if necessary use an air hose to blow off any excessive
arnountS of water in order to complete the inspection. If no leaks are found on the
components, the componenrs wi!l be considered as passed. Tum off the pressure pump,
and open the val ve ro relieve the pressure.
~.3.6 If there are no !eaks found, remove the ftxtures off borh ends. Stamp eacb
component with the bydro stamp. This stamp shou!d be on a flange or somewhere easy ro
/ocate jor inspecrion. From rhe computer cal! up the master hydro sheet (EN .FO 10). Fill in
tbe required information, print a copy and che person performing Ihe tesT should sign the
hydro sheet. Give this information to the engineering manager to distribute to the corree!
customer service represemati ve.

4.3.7 If there are !eaks found, ame where the leaks occur by marking the component
with a permanent marker. Take the fixtures off both ends. Contact QC to obtain a PIR.

-t1.8 If the test data shows that thc pump did nol perform ro zhe customer's minimum
requiremems. a red "tie" will be put on the pump 10 mark it as failed. Then
contact QC for a PIR.

4.2

Instructions - Production Hydro Test- Pump Units

4.2.1 Pumps that are 12" or smaller will be tested as assembled units. These will be
delivered 10 the lab with o-rings inslalled between the bowl tlanges. The pump is
de!ivered to the tesllab with a S.O. number attached asan idemifier. The technician pulls
Lhe test bill (EN.F009). with the matching number. From this information the pressure
rcquiremems and serup fixrures can be determ.ined.
-l.2.2 The tecbnician should take the suctioo piece off the bottom of the pump and the
discharge piece off rhe rop of the pump unit. The correct fixrure for the bouom of the unit
should be o-ringed arouod lhe regisler and then bolted lo the bottom imermediate bowl of
the u ni t. Al so the correct fixrure for the top of the pump unir should be o-ringed around
Lhc regisrer and then bolted to the top intemzediare bowl of the pump.
4.2.3 The pressure hose should now be attached to the fitting on the fixture and the
val ve opened so that lhe air can escape. With a hoist the bottom of the unit should be
raised to an angle so that all of the air can escape as the water fills up the unit.
4.2A The pressure pump should now be rumed on and the enclosed pump filled with
water. When lhe water comes out of the open valve at the highest poim of the u ni t. the
val ve sbould be sbut.
4.2.5 Tbe unit is now ready to hydro test. Use al! safety precautions when tesling a
pump. Tt1111 the pressure pump up lO lhe required test pressure leve!, and hold for a
mnimum of 5 minutes. or the required arnoum of time stated on the test bill. Visua!ly
inspecr the casrings for leales, and i f necessary use an air hose to blow off any excessi ve
arnounts of water in order 10 complete the inspecon. If no leaks are found on the
componenrs, the componenrs will be considered as passed. Tum off Lhe pressure pump,
and open the valve 10 relieve the pressure.
4.2.6 Lower the pump unir. and take the fixrures off both ends of rhe unit. Bolt the
suction bowl and the discharge bowl back omo the unit. Starnp the flanges of each
intennediaze bowl with the hydro starnp. From the computer, call up the master hydro
sheet (EN.FOJO). Fill in the required information. print a copy and the person perfonning
the tesz should sign the hydro fonn. Give thisjorm to the engineering manager ro
distribme 10 the correct customer service representative.
4.2.7 If there are leales found. note where the leales occur by marking the bowl with a
pennanem marker. Take the fixrures off both ends of the unit. Conract QC to obtain a
PIR.

4.0.2 Nextthe pump unit is assembled to the column, shaft, and bead assembly. Befare
the pump is lowered into the test pit, the pressure hose, (used for obtaioing a PSI reading
of the pump), is plugged into the existing titting. The unit is then put into the test pit and
bolted w the horizontal test line. Next the reaction torque meter is anached to the
assembly. The correct motor is then put on the discbarge head and bolted down.
4.0.3 The headshaft nut is threaded onto the shaft, and the correct impeller sening is
adjusted for the pump. For a closed impeller the correct lateral is a mnimum of .125.., for
an open impeller the correct lateral is a mnimum .010" to .015".
4.0.4 Befare the eiectrical connection is made, be sure that the power is off. The
electrical co!Ulectors should now be attached, and the val ve on the test 1ine should be
opened. The unit is now ready to test.
4.0.5 The computer data sheet. ( EN.F003 ), should now be setup according to the
requirements described in the test bill, plus any other requirements deterrnined when the
pump arrives for the testing. The lim conditions for the motor being used should now be
set on the eiectrical panel.

-t.0.6 There will be 7 test points run, set at different flow rates. One point will be O
tlow. one point will be tbe customer's rated flow and one point will be at the pumps
highest flow ra1e. The remaining four points are distribured in the span of the 3 cbosen
points.

-t.0.7 The pump test can now start. Turn on the power to the pump and allow the motor
10 ramp up to the fui! RP.M' s befo re Starting tbe test. From rhe instrwnent readours, at
eaeh jlow point determined on the data sheet. a pressure reading, an RPM reading, anda
horsepower reading should e eme redimo the daca sheer.
4.0.8 After all points ha ve been taken, prinr rhe data sheec (EN. F003 ), and test curve
(EN.F007). The data sheet and the test curve will show, as a mnimum, pressure, power,
and efficiency vs jlow. Ocher special cusiOrmer requiremenrs could be puc on the data
sheet or the tese curve. Record the test data inro the test lab data base. Check tbe shape
of the curves 10 determine if they are consistent with the published curve, (ITC!NDEX).
The test data and curve should be reviewed ro deremzine if rhe pump meeis che mnimum
requirements sraced on che cesr bil/ (EN.F009), and if ic pe1jorms wirhin Hydraulic
lnstirute Srandards. lf che data shows that the pump produced a mnimum of the
cusromer 's required pressure and efficiency, plus che horsepower ar che rated point does
nor overload rhe cuscomer's motor, che pump will be considered as passed. Give the test
data and che curve tO the engineering manager for certificalion. Put a green "tie.. on the
pump to indicate thar ir has passed.
4.0.9 If the resr data shows that the pump did not perform toche cusromer's mnimum
requiremenrs. a red "tie" will be put on rhe pump to mark it as failed. Tben contact QC
for a PIR.
