ADULT
COURSE
GUIDE 2015

STUDYING
HERE WAS
THE BEST
DECISION
I EVER
MADE
GEMMA SIMPSON
LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA IN BEAUTY THERAPY

GEMMA SIMPSON

LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA IN BEAUTY THERAPY

In the past, I followed the traditional route and

studied A Levels so I could gain a place at
university. However, once I had started my
degree in Art and Design, I realised it wasnt
for me. I then discovered I was pregnant,
so I chose to put my career on hold to focus
on raising my family.
I now have a part-time job at Dulux but I
have always been interested in beauty therapy.
I wasnt sure how I could get the kind of
training that would enable me to get a job
and give me the skills to also potentially run
my own beauty salon.
I heard about Newcastle College, and once I
came in to enrol and got a chance to see the
facilities at the Lifestyle Academy, I was totally
sold. The facilities are fantastic and I knew that
I wouldnt find this anywhere else. Im really
enjoying the course and Ive been fortunate to
be in a group with great people, and the course
tutors have also been fantastic.
The part-time courses at the College work
around you so you can develop your career,
work part-time and still not miss out on the
family. Studying here was the best decision
I ever made.

A D ULT COURSE GUID E 2015

WELCOME TO
NEWCASTLE
COLLEGE
IAN CHALMERS

Start something amazing with Newcastle College, let us show you how a part-time
course can work for you... whether youre looking to get back into work, aiming for
a promotion, or even thinking of a new hobby.

LEVEL 1 SOCIAL MEDIA

Prior to studying the course, I was unemployed

and actively seeking work. Through working
with the Jobcentre Executive Work Club, I was
told about the employability courses run by
Newcastle College which focus on improving
your skills in order to find employment.
One of these courses was a Level 1 in Social
Media and as I had always had an interest
in social media platforms such as Twitter,
Facebook and Vine I felt the course could
strengthen my job prospects, so I enrolled
straight away.
The course was a fantastic experience,
and the enthusiasm displayed by tutors was
really inspiring as they tailored the course
to meet our needs. I am now working for a
furniture design company and I use the skills
gained from the course on a daily basis.
Im testament that Newcastle College can
help you get the skills to find employment.

LEVEL 2 SUPPORTING TEACHING

AND LEARNING IN SCHOOLS

Im currently working as a support assistant

at Bailey Green School in Killingworth and I
love it, so to enable me to further my career
I thought it would be beneficial to get a
qualification as a teaching assistant.
When I joined the course, I felt a bit
intimidated as I hadnt studied in a long time
and I didnt know what to expect. However,
I was immediately put at ease by the
fantastic course tutors as they helped me
to settle in and gave me the confidence to
succeed. It also helped that I joined a great
group of students. We help each other
through the course and I have made great
friends as a result.
The tutors appreciate that I have
commitments outside of my course and
they do everything they can to deliver a
course that fits easily within our lives.

Dont forget depending on your circumstances, many of our courses are free or offer a concession even if there is a cost listed, see page 24 for details!

A D ULT COURSE GUID E 2015

MICHELLE MERCER
PART-TIME FOUNDATION
DEGREE IN PHOTOGRAPHY

Previously I worked within IT as an IT Systems

and Network Manager but due to corporate
restructuring, I was made redundant. So I took
the opportunity to take a break from my career
and focus on my family commitments.
I had always been interested in photography
and knew that I wanted to pursue it as a career
so I researched my options online and found
that Newcastle College offered the Foundation
Degree in Photography on a part-time basis.
Im really enjoying my time on the course
and Ive learnt so much. There is a strong
emphasis on working externally and this can
be a challenge when you have family and work
commitments. However, I know Im investing
in my future so Im willing to do what it takes
to succeed.
Studying the FdA Photography has been
fantastic. In 2013, I launched my freelance
photography business, Michelle Mercer
Photography. Ive been able to apply the
knowledge and skills Ive learned on the
course to my own business and Im doing well.
Im excited to see what the future brings.
