Monrovia
he Cellular giant, Lonestar Cell MTN has
rejected findings in a leaked report by the Liberia
Telecommunications Authority suggesting that GSM
Operator without prior authorization from the LTA,
reinstalled or reactivated a telecommunications dish, which
can be used to supply broadband data capacity from the Ivory
Coast to Liberia.
In its findings, the team reported that after careful assessment
of the three GSM mobile operators sites in Grand Gedeh and
Nimba it observed that a microwave dish has been installed at
the same height and in the same position as the decommissioned
microwave dish connecting Lonestarcell/MTN to Ivory Coast
at Lonestarcell/MTN site at the border town of Toe Town.
The finding furthered In Yekepa on the old mine mined by
LAMCO, Cellcom and Lonestarcell/MTN dishes seem to have
orientation directed away from the Ivory Coast and Guinea.
The report recommended that Lonestarcell/MTN should
be requested to provide purpose and function of the newly
-installed microwave dish at Toes Town, the team further
recommended and also called on the LTA to purchase a compass
to facilitate future exercises. The LTA and Lonestar Cell have
in the past been involved in exchanges over compliance with
regulations.
In December 2012, the Board of Commissioners of the LTA
reached a decision to suspend the operating license of Lonsetar
cell. LTA Chairperson Angelique Weeks at the time announced
that the decision was taken as a punitive measure resulting
from failure of the Lonestar to comply with the LTAs directive
to restore fully interconnection with Comium Liberia, another
GSM service provider at the time. It remains to be seen what
action the LTA will take against the two GSM service providers
for their actions.
But on Monday, Dr. Laurence Konmla Bropleh, the companys
Corporate Affairs Executive, responding to a FrontPageAfrica
inquiry Monday, said in a statement that the GSM company
has not re-commissioned a previously decommissioned
telecommunications dish located in Toe Town, Grand Gedeh
County and that it is not receiving broadband data capacity
from the Ivory Coast as is being speculated by an incomplete
leaked LTA fact finding due diligence report

Said Dr. Bropleh: While Lonestar Cell MTN acknowledges

that the terms of its current International Gateway License
issued by the LTA give the company the right to establish
satellite and other links with international carriers and networks
and, though it has written the LTA informing of its intent to
reconnect the previously disconnected telecommunications
dish, it has not done so as yet.
Lonestar Cell MTN notes that a technical team from the
Liberia Telecommunications Authority visited its facility in
January, 2015 and observed that there was no traffic between
Lonestar Cell MTN and its sister network in the Ivory Coast.
To date, there has been no change.
But Weeks, was quoted in a local daily Monday as saying that
LTA previously had the dish removed and Lonestar Cell MTN
has not received the National Regulators authorization to
reinstall it.
According to the LTA, Lonestar Cell MTN risks serious
penalties if it is determined that the GSM company reconnected
the dish or has been receiving data capacity from neighboring
Ivory Coast.

Dr. Bropleh recalled that Lonestar Cell MTN, a member

of the Cable Consortium of Liberia has invested over 2.5
Million United States Dollars in the Africa Coast to Europe
(ACE) fiber optic to Liberia and is an effective user of same.
It is to Lonestar Cell MTNs advantage to have all its traffic
on the fiber optic, which is why Lonestar remains in active
negotiations for the usage of the fiber duct.
Fiber optic is an internet connection that provides fast speed
internet to users and some African countries are currently
benefiting from the technology. Internet service in Liberia is
very slow as compare to other countries and installing a fiber
optic will be a relief to many, but perhaps a dip in revenue for
GSM internet providers.
Bropleh said Lonestar Cell MTN, a partner in support of the
Government of Liberias development agenda will never act
in contrary manners that will undermine the governments
agenda. Lonestar Cell MTN remains compliant with all of
its tax obligations to government and can fathom no reasons
while this should ever change.
Lonestar MTNs denial comes in the wake of confirmation
of a leaked report published by FrontPageAfrica last week
by Angelique Weeks, the Chairperson for the Liberia
Telecommunications Authority (LTA).
Weeks was quoted in a local daily Monday as confirming the
existence of the leaked assessment report of a preliminary
due diligence mission conducted by the entity to validate
suspicions that a previously decommissioned Lonestar Cell
MTN telecommunications dish had been reinstalled.
The report noted that the LTA was contemplating dismantling
the telecommunications dish in question, which is mounted
on a tower in Toe Town, Grand Gedeh County bordering
neighboring Ivory Coast.
According to the report, the telecommunications dish appears
to be positioned where a previous Lonestar Cell MTN dish was
removed and decommissioned by the LTA in August 2012 and
quoted Weeks as saying that the dish will be taken down the
first week in February to ensure that pending completion of
the investigation, there is no capacity coming from the Ivory
Coast.

LEBANONS
CRUELTY; DEATH F
OF LIBERIAN
GIRLS A BIG
SHAME
By Ambrues M. Nebo, neboambrues@gmail.com/nebo1975@yahoo.com, Contributing Writer

FOR A PROTRACTED period, reports have emanated

from Lebanon that several Liberians girls who were
deceived and promised high paying jobs and taken to
Lebanon are being subjected to abuse and inhumane
treatments.
WITH LEBANON HAVING large number of its
citizens residing in Liberia, who are mostly involved
in trading, the relationship between the two countries
is somewhat coordinal since these Lebanese in
Liberia are enjoying good business and employment
environment.
BESIDES THE VERY few Lebanese who commit
or some accused of commission of crimes, who are
currently facing trial in the court, citizens from that
country are provided all the freedom Liberians enjoy,
making it a strange occurrence for Liberians to be
subjected to such treatment in Lebanon.
AS A MATTER of respect, Lebanon is bound to
reciprocate the level of protection the Government and
people of Liberia are according their citizens here in
Liberia rather than treating young Liberians girls as
sex slaves and bastards, resulting into deaths.
LIKE OTHER NATIONALS around the world, people
move from one country to another in search of greener
pastures and opportunities which Lebanon must not
use as an alibi to treat young Liberians like criminalsas they are humans.
NIGERIANS, GHANAIANS, LEBANESE and many
other nationals from other countries are found in
nearly every country around the world, all looking out
for better opportunities.
LEBANESE IN LIBERIA are here for business, jobs
and other opportunities and the level of warm friendship
extended them by the people of Liberia is an indication
that all humans are equal and should be treated in the
rightful manner irrespective of nationality or race.
THE GOVERNMENT AND people of Lebanon have
no reason whatsoever for the treatment meted out
against these young Liberian girls.
EVEN MORE DISTURBING is the careless attitude
of the Government of Liberia in ensuring the return of
the girls to their homeland.
NEWS ABOUT THE ill-treatment of the girls emerged
months ago as were reported consistently in the media
both locally and on the internet. The Government of
Liberia was aware about the appalling situation facing
its citizens but has been slow in acting to bring relief.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY no explanation why a
responsible government with a Ministry of Foreign
Affairs chose to sit supinely and watch its citizens die
in bondage.

rom the Liberian context, I have observed that some people

believed that the best way to gain fame or popularity as
an advocate, activist, opinion leader or politician is by
dwelling or focusing on the negative aspects of leadership
in government. This kind of way of gaining fame and popularity that
suggests behavioral consistency has prompted an inquiry that led to
the above caption.
Lets first of all consider the meaning of negatives. For the purpose
of this article, negatives in leadership simply focused on what is
lacking, shortcomings, weak spots, daunting challenges that lingered
or stand in the way of progress, achievements. It can be unintended or
latent errors derive from actions, decisions or policy that those on the
extreme side as libelers capitalized on. Besides negatives that are very
explicit without relying on a Rocket Scientist interpretation, libeling
anything as negatives sometimes is relative or in the eyes of the
beholder. In other words, what the general public may not consider or
see as negative, the libeler can paint that situation so as to influence or
shift the focuses or attentions of the general public to see it negative.
For example, During the President 2015 State of Nations Address to
the National Legislature, she commended all of the heroes, people
of Liberia and the International Community for the significant fight
against the deadly Ebola virus by specific recognition to few persons.
The public in general did not perceive not particularly mentioning the
name of Hon. Saah Joseph for his heroic effort as something negative.
Few politicians hoping to be in solidarity with Hon. Saah Joseph
attempted to paint the action as negative on grounds that it was unfair
for the honorable name to be left out in the speech. To really prove
that libeling an action or anything to be negative lies in the eyes of
the beholder, Hon. Saah Joseph who should be hurt publicly asserted
that he was never bothered by the President not calling his name in
her speech. He further declared I am in the President heart what a
complete contradiction capable of shaming those who attempted to
paint the President action as negative?
Premise on the fact that those who dwell of focus on the negatives
generally fall under activism, lets us examine the roles associated
with the term.
Whether in politics, social, civil rights or opinion leader, activism
consists of efforts to promote, impede, or direct social, political,
economic, or environmental change. From these roles, it is safe to
rationalize two significant impressions. The essence of focusing on
the negatives which is the first impression is to help those in leadership
desist from ongoing action or impede an attempt inimical to changes
in society or organization.
1
As for the second impression, to promote change which is in the
affirmative suggests the focus on the positives as well. In other words,
it means telling the general public or those accountable to about how
the changes have significantly impacted the society. It is also about
achievements and gains made by the leadership.
It can be argued that some may want to aloof applauding the efforts or
gains which also implied promoting change from the role of activism.
One of the reasons could be seen as a compromise that is capable of
reducing the fame or popularity of the activist.

Whether focusing only on the negatives is donor or sponsor driven

as many would want to argue, let it be borne in minds that this
side of activism cannot conform to what can be termed as best
practices. Moreover, dont be astonished to realize that focusing on
the negatives only contravene the principle or concept of objectivity
that every political, social, civil, religious etc. activist must portray
as one of the distinctive imputes or roles. The life of Albert Porte as
described by President Tubman and others arguably fits this assertion
as an example.
Arguably, you will embrace the assertion that there should be no
behavioral inconsistency of activists that only focus on the negatives
when appointed or called into leadership. In other words, it is
expected that an activist who has focused on the negatives must not
close blind eyes on the emerging negatives when called to serve in the
same organization that he/she never saw the positives.
According to history of Liberia, it can be inferred that the late Albert
Porte probably knew that he would have experienced the difficulties
of retaining behavioral consistency as a critics and so never worked
with the very Tubman government that he never saw anything
positives about. For example in his letter to President Tubman dated
25 August 1951, the President replied. I have never known you to
compliment any administration, but you always look for what you
think to be the weak spots in it. I think this is an evil spirit and an evil
eye which will not do you or the country any good. Supposed every or
most persons had the same spirit, what would happen to the country?
(From Nyanseors Achieves of Liberian & African History).
When the same Albert Porte was given advisory position in the
Samuel K. Doe government with about $600.00 monthly salary which
could be lucrative by then, he retained behavioral consistency. On
one occasion, Porte wrote a letter to President Doe that portrayed the
negative. For example see the excerpt below.
Unless you do not care and continue to follow the stubbornness,
greed and indifference of the late Tolbert, you need to seriously
contemplate on the consequences of your actions. It is my patriotic
duty to warn you that this attitude could plunge us into unpredictable
low depths [] It will give me no satisfaction to tell you later, if I
happen to be around, I told you so. (Albert Porte, A lifetime Trying
to Save Liberia, By Kenneth Y. Best)
2
Debatably, you will again embrace the assertion that their failures
to retain behavioral consistencies result into loss of popularity or
influence in society. Probably, the terminology coined by Liberians
Gravy Seekers derived from the behavioral inconsistencies of these
activists.
In conclusion, there are many people in contemporary Liberia
that attempted to emulate the posture of the late Albert Porte but
demonstrated behavioral inconsistencies when called into leadership
positions. Just do a keen but meticulous profile retrospections, the
enlightenment will come. Focusing on the never negatives as in the
case of President Tubman description of Albert Porte must never
be motivated by personal greed or aggrandizements. It must be an
emerging character provoked and throughout times sustained by a
true sense of patriotic duty.

THE GOVERNMENT HAD sufficient time to rescue

the girls since the news of their worsening conditions
broke out but for months nothing has been done with
the girls living in awful conditions and two deaths now
reported.
GOOD FOREIGN RELATIONS is not only about
talking and begging friendly governments for support to
Liberia, protecting the rights of citizens is paramount.
EVERY COUNTRY HAS the obligation to protect its
citizens but in recent time Liberia has proven incapable
of protecting its citizens outside the shore of the country.
IN TURKEY, LIBERIANS who were shot had to
endure terrible conditions for weeks with claims from
the government that it had done what the citizens were
actually saying were not reaching them. In Kenya,
another Liberian who was held at the airport against
her will because of stigma from Ebola also suffered for
days before rescue finally came her way.
IN GHANA, LIBERIANS are normally flogged, some
killed with no concrete response from the Government
of Liberia.

A BEGGING GOVERNMENT cannot wave the rights

of its citizens simply because it has to go out to these
same countries for hands out, Liberians rather die in
poverty and be subjected to inhumane treatment by
other countries with inaction from our government.
THE RIGHTS OF Liberians must not be gamble for
foreign assistance, this must stop.
LIBERIA MUST TAKE a step further in protecting
the rights of its citizens outside the country by seeking
their welfare through ensuring their return back home
when things go bad for them away from home.
AIR TICKET TO get suffering Liberians back home is
a constitutional and moral obligation of the government
same as other countries that evacuate their citizens in
time of crisis away from home.
LEBANON TOO HAS a lot to explain regarding the
plight of the Liberian girls as Liberians have been so
good to them. There is no reason o pay good with bad.
IT IS TIME both the Lebanese and Liberian governments
to take steps in ensuring the safe evacuation of the
remaining girls.

Noise ? What noise ? Sometime ago , the President nominated someone
to head a ministry . But it took one Senator to question or so to speak
( make noise in the Senate ) concerning the integrity of the nominee ,
who was named in the audit report of the GAC about some corrupt deals
, and his nomination was put on hold by the Liberian Senate waiting
clarification from him about those deals . A few good men still exist in
the unrighteous political house of the Liberian Legislature . The Speaker
still maintained that his corrupt actions was in the best interest of the
country and the people . Calling for the Speaker to account for his corrupt
deal by few good men , joined by strange political bed fellows as Rep.
Snowe and other political voices , should not be ssen as noise making ,
but rather , all should join in support against this kind of corruption where
one sees himself well above the law ! Sometimes some do get away with
their corrupt deals , but that should not deter the rest of the people from
pushing forward against corruption . With 2017 just around the corner ,
support the few good men standing up in the unrighteous house of the
Liberian Legislature .

Why are these crocks making noise, when were they informed about
Speaker Tyler's situation and why such action was not taken against Hon.
Edward Ford? If these seven representatives are really serious about the
integrity and the image of the Hon. House, I suggest they should call for
a complete audit of the Hon. House of Representative. The integrity and
the image of Senate and House of Representative, was long compromised
before Speaker Tyler's incident came to light. Most Liberian, know about
the all powerful brown envelopes going around in the senate and in the

Why are these crocks making unnecessary noise now? Is it because 2017
approaching? Well, let me remind you Honorable Crocks that it is very
late now to change our hearts. We (voters) have cleaned up the House of
Senate and we strongly believed that the clean up process will continue
in the Lower House in 2017. It is very late for some of you so-called

LIBERIA'S CULTURE CLASH: SANDE &

PORO SOCIETY VS MASONIC CRAFT
DAVISNY2005 (SIGNED IN USING YAHOO)
One should welcome the statements made by the ..... Gender Ministry,
we are not kicking against the practice of FGM; our approach is to
modernize it. We know that our traditional people have come a long way
with our culture and there is no way you can just wipe it off. But creating
skills training that the women can get involved in, will gradually take
them away from the practice of FGM. And I think it is the best way to
give them an alternative rather than take everything away from them,
Pointed out Rosaline Browne. " The key to ending this old aged pratice
is through education and training , which is the much better approach .
Through education , those involved in the old practice will come to see
and understand the reasons why the new way is not only better , but is
helping to improve their old culture .

LIBERIA CAN
RISE AGAIN! F

HOMAGE TO FINANCIAL
PATRONS OF CDC

The Editor,

The Editor,

ut it will require collective efforts to get Liberia on the right

path. The refusal of the leadership to accommodate fresher
ideas, continues to place the Country in a backward position.
Government is not about suppressing the views of the
oppositions or silencing the voices of the people, rather, it is about
working together for the common good of all. It is surprising to see
how politics in Liberia has become so corrupt and partisan based.
It is not common sense when you keep repeating the same strategies
with the same players and expecting different results. It is only wise
to change the bad players and bring on board those with the right
vision for growth and productivity. Also, our leaders must be sincere
with themselves and honor the public interests by re-enforcing the
system that creates check and balance, promotes accountability and
transparency, promote health care and education, agriculture, security,
and builds the infrastructures. All these are possible when national
interest takes the place of self interest.
The problem we face as a nation is not the lack of international support
or the lack of financial and other resources to support our government's
action plans, rather, it is the lack of will, insincerity, and the lack of
credibility to achieve them.
Furthermore, putting Liberia on the path to prosperity and economic
growth and development, will also require the choices we make as
voters in the 2017 General and Presidential elections. I am sure we all
have seen and learned enough from the choices we've made over the
last 25 years or more. Electing the right people to offices of trust will
set the pace for growth.
Do not vote on the basis of partisanship or for the gifts the candidates
may offer you but base your decision on character, patriotism,
achievements in the private and public sectors, etc.
Liberia can rise again; let's act together in this time and season.
God bless you all!

DEAD HEALTH WORKERS

FAMILY NEEDS HELP

The Editor,

'm kindly sharing my story with you. Trust you can help.
My wife was a registered Nurse, while on duty she got infected,
with EVD.
She died August 2014.
I'm left with three children. Edwin is in the 4th grade, and Quincy is in
the 7th grade. Morris is 2 years old.
My wife was the only source of income for the family, as I'm still
looking for job. School will open this month.
The Government of Liberia promised to give USD 5,000.00 to each
family of those health workers who died of ebola.
The promised was made September 2014. I submitted all the documents,
required by the Ministry of Health (MOH), November 2014.
The money will be a great help, to buy our children school materials,
and get them in school.
Best regards,
Blomoh Wilson

ar too many political parties in Liberia failed to achieve State

Power through the means of grassroots democracy because of
the lack of strong financial goodwill from its members. Every
so often, a single individual will take the financial burden of
a party. Naturally, the person will determine the future and become the
sole decision maker of that political party. What do you think? Do you
think the person is wrong in determining the future of his/her investment?
Will you allow others you dont trust to determine the future of your
investment? What if we are all investors, do you think, one person will
determine the future of the party or become the sole decision maker? I
dont think so. But this is a debate we can all have.
No political or any institution for that matter can meet its objectives without
funding. As a political party, you need funding for administrative and
operational purposes including but not limited to media and propaganda
to spread your message; decentralization of the organization in every part
of the country to make your presence felt by recruiting and spreading
your partys platform; trainings; workshop materials; flyers; vehicles; gas;
computers to keep planning and membership info; cost of building to host
partys offices in the country; and etc...You can not undertake all these
project without funding to pay for labor, materials, and rents.
As CDC-USA Financial Secretary in consultation with the rest of
the financial team, it is our responsibility to safeguard the financial
viability of the party. We are a strong supporter of institutionalization
in which members paid their dues and other taxations to prevent the
monopolization of the decision making process by one individual. It is
strategically and equally important to appreciate contributors and explain
to them how their money was spent. Based on this theory and appreciation
being a fundamental human need in confirming that ones contribution
is valued; it is our intention to publish the names of contributors by the
end of every year starting with the year 2014 to inform others that these
contributors are the bloodline of our organization and what their money
has accomplished in CDC.
On behalf of CDC and its leadership, we want to express our deepest
thanks and admiration to all of you that contributed to the financial growth
of CDC in 2014. Those generous contributions from partisans like you
provide the financial and moral support needed to continue our mission
in Liberia. In the light of those faithful financial contributions, you have
demonstrated your deep commitment to our work of delivering our people
from the unspeakable horrors of poverty and the unpunishable massive
public corruption to a road of prosperity for all. Your financial support
has repeatedly played a key role in our success during the year 2014, like:
the primaries, 2014 convention & Policy Conference in Maryland-USA,
fight against Ebola, Poll watchers support, Purchased of ID Card Machine
and etc....
The Top 10 Consistent and Highest Contributors mentioned in the
financial reports submitted for 2014 are Isaac Vah Tukpah, Lorenzo
Andrews, Galakpai Howard, Joseph Jackson, Arthur Zakama, Isaac
Zawolo, Varney Karnley, James Larsah, Rufus Arkoi and Fatuma Zinnah.
These consistent and highest contributors must be admired by all, for they
have shown their unwavering loyalty in supporting the financial survival
in the implementation of CDCs projects consistently throughout 2014.
To be among the Top 10 Consistent and Highest Contributors during
subsequent years as it was this year, you must contribute consistently in
three or more categories (Dues & Taxations) in which all members are
expected to contribute. Next, you will be ranked from highest to the lowest
amount paid. If two or more people have the same amount, the frequency
of payments will be considered with the highest number of consistency
taking the lead. Any contribution in which all members are not given the
chance to contribute will not be measured during our tallying at the end of
the year. For example, ticket for ball during CDC gathering or application
fee for a position and etc will not be tallied for the Top 10 spot.
In conclusion, many Liberians have put their trust in visioning a
prosperous future for their children through a CDC led government. Let
us not let them down in continuing the grassroots democracy because
such movement gives birth to a government for the People, of the People,
and by the People.
Long live the Peoples Party!
Varney Karnley
CDC-USA National Financial Secretary

He says he feels the vaccines are

then your body can fight against
the disease because thats the
essence of vaccines, he said.
Continued Mr. Nyenswah: A
vaccine is intended to build up
your bodys resistance; your
bodys immune system so that
when you come in contact with
a disease that youre taking
vaccine for that disease wont
catch you. That does not mean
that people would be exposed
to Ebola. This vaccine is not
intended for one single person

this vaccine is intended for
people above the age of 18.
Mr. Nyenswah said people who
take the trial vaccine would be
followed up to understand the
effectiveness of the trial. He said
the trial vaccine was randomly
administered with Ordinary Salt
Water to see how it works.

UNCERTAINTY, WILLINGNESS AND CURIOSITY, AS A SEARCH

FOR A REMEDY TO EBOLA INTENSIFIES IN WEST AFRICA

FACES OF LIBERIAS VACCINE TRIALS

Im encouraging others out there to come and be part of the trial. Some people say if you take the injection
you will die, others say you will get Ebola but it is not so. - MERCY NYUMAH, Ebola Trial Volunteer

Monroviaiberias bout with the

deadly Ebola Virus
has left the deadlyvirus-hit nation in
desperation for a cure and
despite the continued slowing
of the disease over the last two
months, the drive for a vaccine
that would put a permanent end
to the disease is on.
On Monday, many Liberians
cued up at the Redemption
Hospital,
volunteering
themselves as guinea pigs for the
trial vaccine meant to prevent
people from catching Ebola.
Despite
being
seemingly
brainwashed by some members
of their community who told
them that there would be
horrible consequences if they
volunteered to take the vaccine,
those who finally decided to get
the inoculation said they did not
see the reason why people would
discourage others from taking a
trial vaccine, though a cure for
the disease is something that
people wished for during the
height of the epidemic.
Mercy Nyemah is a resident of
New Kru Town where the trial
is taking place says she showed
up to be part of the first batch
of twelve persons who took the
vaccine and explained that her
being part of the process was
based on conviction and working
with the Ebola Response.
I volunteered to take the vaccine
because I work with the Ebola
Task Force as an active case
finder, she said. I cant preach
the message to people to carry
out the preventive measures
and hearing about the trial of
this vaccine and not be a part. I
decided yesterday to be part of
this trial thats the reason I came
to do my test.
Mercy says she was tested for
HIV and AIDS and also for
Pregnancy adding: I did all
of my tests, I feel normal, the
process is ok. I did tests for
malaria, HIV and pregnancy
and everything was negative, so
I came here to do the injection.
Nyumah is calling on others to
join the cure for a vaccine and
help Liberia and other affected
countries fight the deadly virus.
Im encouraging others out
there to come and be part of the
trial. Some people say if you take
the injection you will die, others

say you will get Ebola but it is

not so, she said.
Please dont listen to them. Im
encouraging all of my friends out
thee to come and be part of this
trial to prevent ourselves and our
country from Ebola.
Zodu McGill, a resident of New
Kru Town, Borbor Garage, who
also volunteered for the vaccine,
says his decision to volunteer
was to protect family and friends
from the disease that has cost
the lives of over four thousand
persons in Liberia alone.
I took the vaccine because I

do not want Ebola to infect my

internal body or that of any of my
family members and friends,
she says.
Ebola is very dangerous it can
kill people so quick. Im not
feeling sick, only my arm is
burning and Im feeling a bit of
pain in it. I want people to come
and take this vaccine out of
concern for their health.
Stephen McGill a volunteer
who took the vaccine at the
Redemption Hospital Monday,
says the trial vaccine signals
hope for a breakthrough in the

Ebola epidemic. He said the start

of the trial in Liberia signal hope
for a country that has suffered
so much from the disease that
currently has no cure.
I volunteered because I feel
that when the success rate is one
hundred percent the region will
benefit a lot because we have
the Ebola virus in this part of the
world, says McGill.
At least this is the first time
history will be made being part of
the first people who volunteered
to have the vaccine for Ebola
taken. I think it is a worthy

Page 5

cause. Ive been reading a lot,

Ive been following the stories
and Ive been hearing about the
different reports on Ebola all
over the world, where it started.
Most of those who took the
vaccines seem to have no fear
at least yet about what would
happen to them after they take
the vaccines. McGill said before
the vaccines are administered,
they are thoroughly educated
about the merits and demerits
of the process and how safe it is
and the consequences that may
arise as a result of side effects.

Exercise Caution, Survivor

Says
Despite the rush for a cure for the
deadly disease, some who know
what it feels like to contract
Ebola say care has to be taken
before the administration of trial
vaccines to immunize people
against the deadly disease.
Amos K. Jessy an Ebola Survivor
and a resident of Monrovia
expressed some reservations
about the current trial of Ebola
Vaccines in the country. Jessy
says his concerns stem from
the contraindications of the
trial vaccines on the people
who might end up taking them.
He said Liberia in search of a
quick fix to its Ebola problem
is offering its people as Guinea
Pigs to be slaughtered in the
process.
For me as an individual, that
is my personal opinion, I have
problem with the trial drug,
problem in the sense that most of
the side effects, of this trial drug,
are also symptoms of Ebola,
said Jessy.
By administering a medication
to a patient that should bring
relief at the end of the day,
helps to increase the agony of
the patient. For me, this trial
drug should be discontinued.
However as I said earlier, that is
my personal opinion.

Prince Moye (UPDistrict#2

who
admitted signing a Blank check
for transaction at the legislature
says he will welcome any
investigation from the Liberia
Anti-Corruption Commission
(LACC) on the matter.
The Bong County lawmaker
recent comments comes in
the wake of calls by some of
his colleagues that the LACC
should rather investigate Moye
for violating section 1 part
A.10,16, 17, 20 of the Public
Financial management law
(PFM) and not the speaker of
the House of Representatives
or deputy speaker.
According to one of the
lawmakers calling for Moyes
investigation, Representative
Garrison Yealue (NUDPDistrict# 4 Nimba County), his
colleague from Bong County
as a Professional accountant
with years of experience in
financial transaction acted in
violation of the law governing
financial practices.
Yealue said: The LACC
cannot be looking for the rouge
when she has already seen the
person who came out of the
House with the money?
The lawmaker said Moye has
openly told the public that he
signed blank checks and under
financial laws anyone who
signs blanks checks accept to
take responsibility; so Moye
should be investigated.

LAWMAKERS WANT BONG COUNTY COLLEAGUES INVESTIGATED FOR SIGNING OIL DEAL CHECKS

Henry Karmo (0886522495) henry.karmo@frontpageafricaonline.com

Moye, during an appearance

last Thursday on a local radio
talk show, the Truth Breakfast
Morning Magazine, in response
to the deputy House speakers
disclaimer in the US$1.2
million, admitted signing
two blank checks during the
nationwide draft petroleum law
consultation.
The Bong County lawmakers

revelation came in the wake

of a recent comment made by
the House Deputy speaker that
he and the Speaker do not sign
financial documents and that he
is only aware of $US900,000
and not US$1.2 million as is
being reported.
In a statement Monday, the
Bong County lawmakers said,
his comments on the Radio

was not made out of ignorance

because according to him,
he was instructed to sign the
checks by the House Deputy
speaker.
Said Moye: We have a transit
account at the Central Bank
of Liberia in the case of the
oil consultation we signed a
voucher of 1.2 million so we
what we should be discussing

is who withdrew the money

from our coffers and not who
signed the checks. I signed
the checks knowing that we
had one million United States
dollars to be spent.
Continued Moye: We are
ceremonious
signatories
to these accounts. I am an
honorable man that is why we
have an account department at

this legislature and that is the

position we are in right now.
Asked if he was under pressure
to sign the two blank checks
before his departure for the
U.S., Moye said he was not
under pressure and claimed that
under the rules of the House of
Representatives,
lawmakers
take orders from the Speaker
and Deputy Speaker.
Section 57.4 B of the House of
Representatives standing rules
states that all matters relating
to the finances of the House of
Representatives are subject to
the speaker or Deputy Speaker.
Last week Deputy House
speaker Hans Barchue denied
receiving $US1.2 Million from
the National oil Company of
Liberia on behalf of the House
of Representatives.
According to the Deputy
Speaker, at a news conference
last Tuesday, there is no
basis for submitting himself
to the LACC despite a
communication
form
the
LACC to him, informing
him that it has launched an
investigation into the US$1.2
million given to the House of
Representatives by NOCAL to
enhance the consultation.

A
Monrovia-

s Liberia shows
improvement in the
fight against the
deadly Ebola virus,
organizations and institutions
that contributed to the success
are receiving appreciations for
their contributions.
A team of 92 Kenyan medical
volunteers currently in Liberia
as part of the African Union
Support to Ebola Outbreak
in West Africa (ASEOWA)
dispatched to help fight Ebola in
the country has been lauded by a
group of Liberians.
A group
comprising
33
Liberians who graduated from
the University of Nairobi in
Kenya, under the banner, K-33
(Kenya-33),
on
Saturday,
January 31, 2015, held a
welcoming ceremony for the
92 Kenyan medical volunteers
applauding the team for their
contributions to Liberia.
K-33 is an organization of
Liberians who were sent to study
in Kenya in January 2011 by the
General Auditing Commission
(GAC) of Liberia, during the
administration of then Auditor
General John S. Morlu, II.
They obtained MBA (Masters
of Business Administration
Degrees) in several different
disciplines from the University
of Nairobi along with Certified
Fraud
Examination
(CFE)
certification from the Kenyan
Charter of the Association of
Certified Fraud Examiners.
Speaking at the program
which took place at the Julia
A. Marshall Memorial Farm
in Central Virginia, outside
Monrovia, K-33 Chairman,
Dioh Cox Podee, said he and his
colleagues decided to rousingly
welcome the Kenyan Delegation
in appreciation to African
solidarity they continue to show,
especially during Liberias
health crisis.
Podee added that the occasion
was intended to laud the presence
of the Kenyan delegation
because since they (members
of K-33) returned, they have
been sharing the good news
of Kenyans, recognizing the
brotherly accommodation they
received in Kenya during their
studies.

and because we dont want your
presence to go unnoticed, we
decided to officially welcome
you, he told the Kenyan
Delegation.
According to Podee, K-33
is determined to use what he
referred to as Kenyan model
to help improve the business
climate in Liberia, disclosing
the incorporation of a business
group called K-33 Ventures.
We want to localize the Kenyan
business model we saw, into
our Liberian setting. Like the
agriculture, like the transport
sector we saw, we believe that
we can create more jobs in the
supply chain using the African
model to do that, he stated.
Podee revealed plans by some
Kenyan investors to soon begin
investment in Liberia, terming
it as a positive sign, especially
where the African model is
used instead of borrowing from
different culture.
He avowed: We will continue to
interact with you, as we continue
to interact with some people

in Kenya, and we are sure that

collaboratively we can make the
difference.
The K-33 Chairman also praised
members of his group for making
the program a success, giving
special thanks to Niasehkar
Gluaseay,
Communication
Director, who was also the lead
organizer of the program.
For his part, the Kenyan Medical
Team Leader for Liberia and
Sierra Leone, Dr. Shikanga
O-tipo, praised members of
K-33 for the warm welcoming
reception
and
pledged
willingness to working with
them.
Dr. O-tipo said their response
is to show African solidarity in
helping to fight Ebola in Africa
and restore basic health services
in West Africa, especially Ebolahit countries.
According to him, it is incumbent
on all Africans to assist whenever
there is a problem in any part
of the continent, saying, Your
problems are our problems.
At the same time, the Kenyan

Medical Team leader stressed

the need for concerted efforts if
Ebola must be eradicated totally
in Africa, giving the assurance
of his team to help restore basic
health services in West Africa,
especially Ebola-hit nations.
Dr. O-tipo, who said he is leading
170 medical volunteers-92 in
Liberia and 78 in Sierra Leoneexplained that they have been
in West Africa for two weeks,
preparing local health workers.
While Ebola is being eradicated,
Dr. O-tipo said there is a need for
international partners to remain
in West Africa to put into place
mechanisms that will prevent the
recurrence of Ebola outbreak.
Delivering special remarks at
the occasion, the patron and
visionary of K-33, Dr. Musa
Dukuly, a senior economist
for the West African Monetary
Union (WAMU), recounted the
friendship of Kenyans and longstanding ties between Liberia
and Kenya.
Dr. Dukuly, who also studied in
Kenya and other East African

countries, spoke on the theme:

From Kenya to Kenya, with
the view that, though the medical
volunteers had travelled miles,
they were still at home due to the
common cultural values the two
nations share.
He recalled how Liberia assisted
Kenya in its emancipation in the
1960s and since then, the two
countries continue to collaborate
in building their human resources
and improving other sectors, as
demonstrated by accepting the
Liberians (K-33) and others to
study at various universities in
Kenya.
In Kenya, Liberians were not
harassed, molested or did not
undergo any form of violence,
he noted, assuring the Kenyans
the similar hospitality is
demonstrated by Liberians as
well as Kenyas response to the
Ebola outbreak.
The head and representative
of Ethiopian and Zimbabwe
medical teams respectively also
graced the occasion, and praised
K-33 for the reception.

Reading a brief history of K-33,

Milton Vambah, said they were
33 Liberians sent by GAC in
January 2011 to study at the
University of Nairobi, through
the vision of then Auditor
General John Morlu, II in
addressing the human resource
drought in Liberia.
When they returned in December
2012, they embarked on a project
to incorporate themselves into a
group that will keep the dream
of John Morlu and also help
upcoming generation as well as
assist in improving the Liberia
business sector.
Following series of discussions,
they held a retreat in Buchanan,
Grand Bassa County early this
year, where they adopted the
name K-33 and eventually
K-33 Ventures, intended to
import and export goods to and
fro Liberia and Kenya.
Some members of K-33 are now
assigned at different public and
private institutions and places.

The minister added: It is also

the Liberia National Police

Minister Lighe asserted that
in a bid to ensure that some
victims of the explosion
receive a befitting burial, an
amount of US$ 4,500.00 has
been provided by the LAC

The Labor Minister has
meanwhile disclosed that

According to Straight From the

campaign of temperature taking
in two communities in the Clara

they observed that residents in
the area lack access to toilet
facilities, drainages, Clinics with

The latest revelation by the

The group said Ebola has

The group is demanding that

also is involved in this Preshipment assessment process,

Stephen, according to Mrs.

Mrs. Pelham further claimed
that with boots on the ground,

You cant reappraise goods

Wesley said all the changes the
custom should make should be
done in consultation with the

unknown to them.
Meanwhile, the head of the
NPA Matilda Parker in a
meeting with the Custom

the brokers that they would

raised.
Until then, the Association
said they will not returned to

NPA pensioned employees
protest

Also the over 1800 pensioned

employees of the National Port
Authority stormed the NPA
premises in demand for their
life insurance benefit entitled
them.
Speaking
with
FrontPageAfrica,
John
Freeman said that since 1972,
the NPA introduced a pension
scheme with the American Life
Insurance Company (ALICO),
and from that moment, the
employees
salaries
were
deducted until the 1980
military Coup d etat.
Freeman said since after the
war, they have been pensioned
by NPA, they have not been
able to receive their benefits,
until 2011 they went into
agreement with NPA.
According to Freeman, the
1.5Million that president Ellen
Johnson Sirleaf has claimed
she allotted for the pensioned
employees, fourth payment
are yet to be made, which has
prompted them to come to the
NPA in their numbers.
Said Freeman; The first time
we receivedUSD260, the
second was USD105 third
payment was 132USD but the
fourth one where we should be
receiving USD132 is still on
hold. When we come they will
tell us to go come back. See
how old we are they will keep
us in the sun, it is not fair.
In the memorandum of

the government demanded that
it will offer a grant payment of

in the Memorandum of

Monroviaiberia lead researcher on the Ebola vaccines Stephen

Kennedy has volunteered to form part of the clinical
Ebola vaccine trial.
Kennedy said that he will lead by example by
showing up to form part of the trial.
I was on my way to take my vaccine but I got a call to come at
this press conference [Ministry of Information] so by tomorrow
I will be there to take the vaccine, Kennedy said.
The lead researcher decision comes against the backdrop that
Some Liberians do not want to volunteer for fear of contracting
the virus. The trail first phase will cover six hundred volunteers
but experts fear the trial may not reach that number due fear
amongst the Liberian populace.
But Kennedy says that the number of volunteers showing up
on day one at the trail center is a positive signed that the study
might reach its target.
Kennedy said, before noon five persons have been vaccinated
adding that it is a positive signed that the study will reach its
target for the day.
Kennedy said, the vaccine center at redemption will take
twelve volunteers a day adding that first phase will absorb six
hundred volunteers.
The first six hundred vaccinations will occur at the newly
renovated clinical research unit of the redemption hospital,
said.
The Clinical trial in Liberia on two experimental Ebola
vaccines is partnership by both the Liberian and the American
government.
The partnership for research on Ebola vaccines in Liberia
study is designed to determine if giving a single dose of a test
vaccine will prevent Ebola virus disease, National Institute of
Health Clinical Director Clifford Lane said.
Lane said, the two vaccines to be tested in this study are the
ChAd3-ZEBOV vaccine, manufactured by Glaxo SmithKline,
and the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine, manufactured by Merck/
NewLink.
Lane said, the two vaccines selected for this study were
recognized by the World Health Organization panel of experts.
Lane said, the study protocol has been reviewed by health
institutions in both Liberia and the United States.
The study protocols has been diligently reviewed for scientific
rigor and ethics, and has been approved by the U.S Food and
Drug Administration, an Institutional review Board of the U.S.
National Institutes of Health, the National Research Ethics
Board of Liberia, and the Liberia Medicines and Health
Products Regulatory Authority, Lane said.
Approximately 27,000 healthy adult volunteers are expected
to participate in the Study at 10 or more clinical centers in and
around Monrovia.
Kennedy added, that legal aspect of the research is carryout by
the Ministry of Justice
These study involve several parts, the legal and medical
aspects, we are actively and primarily engage in the medical
prism, the ministry of Justice is having discussion on the trail.

NEW EBOLA HOTSPOT

Five new cases reported in St. Paul Bridge Community
Stephen.kollie@frontpageafricaonline.com/0776329124

D
Monrovia -

espite tremendous
efforts by the
government
of Liberia and
international partners aimed at
eradicating the deadly Ebola
virus, it seems the fight is
becoming difficult to reach
an end as new cases of Ebola
are again being reported in the
country.
For the past few days, Liberia
which was recording dozens
of Ebola cases daily was only
battling with the last five
confirmed Ebola cases but that
record is now on a slippery
path as five new Ebola cases

have been reported in the St.

Paul Bridge Community in
Montserrado County
Addressing
the
Ministry
of Information daily Ebola
press
briefing,
Assistant
Health Minister and Head
of the Incident Management
System Tolbert Nyenswah
explained that the government
has identified a fresh Ebola
outbreak in the St. Paul Bridge
area, describing it as the St.
Paul bridge cluster infection
chain.
Minister Nyenswah named
Zubah town, Gbangay town as
well as Creb Hole communities
in the St. Paul Bridge area as

the major hotspot of the new

Ebola outbreak.
Five new cases have been
reported in seven days in
those communities. From
Jan 12 to Feb 1, 2015, fifteen
confirmed cases have been
reported, all from Montserrado
and seven cases are now in
the ETU,Minister Nyenswah
said.
According
to
Minister
Nyenswah, what is more
troubling is that the contacts
of the disease are escaping
from the hotspot and moving
in to unaffected regions in the
country.
They are denying and leaving

Montserrado to go areas like

Lofa, Margibi and Bomi that
have been freed of Ebola for a
very long time but we brought
them back so that they dont
infect those counties, he said.
Nyenswah revealed that one
of the escaped contacts died
in Margibi County recently
but the Ministry is now testing
specimen from the contact to
determine the result.
He indicated that another
contact left the same St. Paul
Bridge area and drove to the
Bomi county ETU to report
himself, despite the existence
of several Ebola Treatment
Units in Montserrado.
Said Minister Nyenswah:
This is troubling! We have to
stop in Montserrado County.
When you are told that you
are a contact, remain in your
home for twenty-one days.
We are not crazy people to say
you are a contact. We prove
epidemiologically that yes, you
are a contact, that you have
earlier a primary or secondary
contact with a confirmed case.
Speaking in a frustrated tone,
the Assistant Health Minister
said the government will not
hesitate to invoke the Public
Health law and the anti-Ebola
regulation to punish people
who will infect others by
migrating from one community
to another.

obbi Kristina Brown,

the only daughter of
late pop star Whitney
Houston and singer
Bobby Brown, was found
unresponsive in a bathtub at her
Georgia home on Saturday, but
she was revived after being rushed
to a hospital, police said.
The incident comes nearly three
years after Houston, a superstar
who battled substance abuse,
drowned in a bathtub in Beverly
Hills, California, in February
2012. Authorities have said
cocaine use and heart disease
contributed to her death.
Brown, 21, was found at about
10:20 a.m. (1520 GMT) in the
bathtub at her suburban Atlanta
home by her husband and a
friend, said Lisa Holland, public
information officer for the Roswell
Police Department.
Brown's husband, Nick Gordon,
started CPR and police continued
life-saving measures until an
ambulance arrived and took her to
the hospital.

suicide
bombing rocked a
presidential campaign
rally in northeast
Nigeria on Monday, as the
country braced for fresh Boko
Haram attacks before polling in
just under two weeks time.
President Goodluck Jonathan,
who had been addressing
supporters of his ruling Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) in
Gombe city, had just left the
venue when the blast happened
in a car park outside.
Rescue workers and health
officials said the bodies of two
women were brought to the
Gombe State Specialist Hospital
with 18 people who were injured.
"We have evacuated two bodies
of females we believe were
suicide bombers behind the
blast," said the rescue official,
who asked to remain anonymous
because he was not authorised to
speak to media.
The blast, confirmed by
eyewitnesses
including
a
local reporter following the
presidential convoy, came a day
after two explosions in Gombe
city blamed on Boko Haram
militants.
Sunday's attacks left at least
five people dead in a weekend
of deadly violence that also saw
the Islamists attack the key city
of Maiduguri for the second time
in a week.
Nigerian troops, aided by
civilian vigilantes, repelled the
attack while Chad and Cameroon
bombed the Boko Haram-held
town of Gamboru, on the eastern
fringe of Borno State.
Security
analysts
believe
Maiduguri, the Borno state
capital, will likely be hit again
before polling day, given its
symbolism for the group and
because it would undermine the
February 14 vote.
The election is expected to be
the closest since Nigeria returned
to civilian rule in 1999, with
the prospect of the PDP being
dumped out of power for the first
time in 16 years.

chief
Dominique StraussKahn went on trial on
Monday accused of
pimping, four years after a sex
scandal cost him his job and a
shot at the French presidency.
The
disgraced
65-year-old
economist found himself back
in the dock -- this time in the
northern French city of Lille -accused of being at the centre of a
vice ring which hired prostitutes
for sex parties in Brussels, Paris
and Washington.
A , dressed in a dark suit, slipped
past a throng of journalists into

Tuesday, February 3, 2015

the wood-panelled courtroom,

where he paced up and down
with his hands in his pockets
in front of the imposing stone
bench, where more than 40
massive files were stacked.
He appeared on edge as he sat,
arms folded, while presiding
judge Bernard Lemaire read
out the charges against him and
13 co-accused, a colourful cast
of characters including luxury
hotel managers, a lawyer, former
police commissioner, and a
brothel owner nicknamed "Dodo
the Pimp".
"You are accused of aiding
and abetting the prostitution of

seven persons between March

29, 2008 and October 4, 2011,
and of hiring and encouraging
the prostitution of these same
persons," Lemaire told StraussKahn.
The trial kicked off with a request
for the hearings of ex-prostitutes
to take place behind closed
doors, which Lemaire rejected
after a brief deliberation.
Lurid details of group sex
and high-end prostitution are
likely to emerge in the trial
for "aggravated pimping in
an organised group", a charge
punishable by up to 10 years in
prison and a fine of up to 1.5
million euros ($1.7 million).
The court will also mull a request
to have the trial declared invalid,
over allegations investigations
were secretly being carried out
for eight months before the
opening of an official enquiry
-- fuelling arguments by StraussKahn's supporters that he is the
victim of a political conspiracy.
The trial will be the latest in a
series of legal woes offering a
peek behind the bedroom door of
a man once tipped as a potential

to defend the town when it was

attacked on January 3.
That led some to assume the
existing force was dead in the
water but the devastating strike
on Baga, in which hundreds
or more were feared killed,
appears to have jolted it into
action.
- Two fronts Jonathan, who has been
criticised for failing to end the
violence, could be hoping for

challenger to former French

president Nicolas Sarkozy.
The ex-head of the International
Monetary Fund, known in
France as DSK, saw his career
implode in 2011 when he was
paraded handcuffed in front of
the world's cameras after a New
York hotel maid accused him of
sexual assault.
Those criminal charges were
dropped and the case settled in
a civil suit, but six months later
Strauss-Kahn's name cropped
up in an investigation into a
prostitution ring in northern
France and Belgium.
- The 'Carlton Affair' Investigators
probing
the
"Carlton Affair" -- named after
one of the swish hotels in Lille
where local businessmen and
police officials organised sex
parties -- found some of the
prostitutes involved had been
hired to participate in soirees
attended by Strauss-Kahn.
Prostitution is legal in France
but procuring -- the legal term
for pimping which includes
encouraging, benefiting from
or organising prostitution -- is
punishable by a hefty jail term.
The crux of the case against DSK
is whether he knew the women
lavishing their attention on him
were prostitutes and whether he
played a role in organising their

a political bounce from any

military successes in the tight
election campaign, even at this
late stage.
But Mark Schroeder, from
security and political analysts
Stratfor, believes that allowing
foreign forces to operate
on Nigerian soil would be
counter-productive to him and
the country.
"This is essentially absolving
Nigeria of its long-standing
geopolitical strength as the
region's hegemon able to assist
internal and pan-West African
security stability," he said.
Schroeder, the group's vicepresident for Africa analysis,
also
considered
Nigerian
Army operations no more
than "forays", adding that a
sustained effort was needed to
claw back territory.
Boko Haram's attacks on
Maiduguri may be designed
to draw the Nigerian army
to defend the city, allowing
the group to mount strikes
elsewhere in the northeast and
defend eastern positions.
Ryan Cummings, chief Africa
analyst at risk consultants
Red24, suggested the last
two strikes may have been
preliminary tests of the city's
defences.
"Boko Haram is currently in
its most advantageous tactical
position to launch a large-scale
offensive on Maiduguri, with
the intent of actually capturing
the city," he said.
"This could be the preamble
to such a push. I still remain
sceptical as to whether Boko
Haram has the resources to
either capture or hold a city the
size of Maiduguri.
"But the sect may well be
planning to give it a go."
presence.
DSK admits to being a
"libertine" who enjoys orgies but
has steadfastly denied knowing
the women were paid.
"In these circumstances one isn't
always clothed, and I challenge
you to tell the difference between
a prostitute naked and any other
woman naked," DSK's star
lawyer Henri Leclerc, 84, said
in 2011.
But even prosecutors have been
divided over whether there
is enough evidence to prove
DSK was more pimp than
casual consumer. In 2013 state
prosecutor Frederic Fevre called
for the charges to be dropped, but
investigating judges overruled
him and ordered DSK to stand
trial.
- 'King of the party' Their probe found that DSK was
the "king of the party," and they
are seeking to prove his mere
presence gave rise to prostitution
as his entourage organised
the evenings according to his
schedule.
Those attending the gatherings
described "carnage with a heap
of mattresses on the floor", with
DSK the focus of several women
at a time in an atmosphere more
of "pure sexual consummation"
than a typical swinger's party.

TRAINING FOR
"PERSONAL REASONS"

Liberias Alex Karmo hoping to reinvent Debbahs 1999 search for greener pastures for compatriots

t is more than two

weeks since 25 Liberian
footballers left Monrovia in
search of greener pastures.
Led by Liberian Football
Players Union (LFPU) founding
president Wleh Bedell, the
lads are hoping to secure the
necessary paper works and or
visas for a voyage to Laos.
Roland Mulbah, president of the
Sports Writers Association of
Liberia, told FrontPageAfrica
(FPA) on Monday that the
delegation will leave Accra,
Ghana on Wednesday for Laos.
Officially the Lao People's
Democratic Republic, Laos is a
landlocked country in Southeast
Asia, bordered by Burma and
the Peoples Republic of China
to the northwest, Vietnam to the
east, Cambodia to the south and
Thailand to the west.
Since 1975, it has been ruled
by a Marxist and communist
government. Its population
was estimated to be around 6.8
million in July 2014.
The national sport is the
martial art of muay Lao. It is a
form of kickboxing similar to
Thailand's muay Thai, Burmese
Lethwei, Malaysian Tomoi, and
Cambodian Pradal Serey.
But football has grown to be
the most popular sport in Laos.
The Lao League, made-up of
12 clubs, is the top professional
league.
Since it started in 1990, Lao
Army FC have been the most
successful club with eight
titlesthe highest number of
championship wins by a club.
This is where some Liberian
footballers want to grab a
professional deal with some
decent wages or use it as a spring
board to higher heights.
[Today is] day nine in Ghana.
[We are] enjoying every moment
with my lads and the new
goodwill ambassador of Liberian
football, Alex Beyam Karmo.
I know you are keen to know
why the Laos-based rugged

such manner. Just wait and read
subsequent posts and articles,

Karmo, who plays for SHB

to be bankrolling the trip but
FPA understands that each player

Karmos club finished third in
the 2014 league but it is his
desire to see his compatriots in
Laos that has left me with plenty
talking points.
Liberia are at 115, 45 places
above Laos, on the latest Fifa
world rankings released on
January 8.
So why do young footballers
want to go there?
Well, countries or leagues
rankings dont matter to them,
at least, because football is
practically dead and buried in
Liberia.
The dreams of footballers hoping
to earn professional contracts in
Europe or America arent easily
realized.
For

an adhoc basis due to the

Liberias
last
international
competitions were in shambles.
Players of the under-20 national
team went to camp less than four
days to their home match with
the Ivory Coast.
The necessary motivation may
have been lacking when they
were given US$100 as perdiems.
They squeezed a 1-0 victory on
May 10, 2014 but camped for
only two days to their departure
for the return leg in Abidjan
without perdiems. They were
beaten 2-0 on May 24, 2014.
The Liberia Football Association
didnt give their promised
perdiems and they seized the
jerseys meant for the senior team
on their return to the Roberts
International Airport.
Their seniors, who also had
a return leg against Lesotho
in Maseru on June 1, 2014,
endured their fair share of bad
organization.
The traveling delegation had to
wait for hours at the airport in
Accra before accommodations
were arranged and then team
manager Sebastian Collins was
used as a pawn in the game of
chess to guarantee the hotel that

Having allowed Mattia Destro to

their attacking ranks on Saturday

million (14.4 million Euros), with
the potential for an extra US$1.7

performance-related add-ons.
The 27-year-old has been prolific
since moving to Russia in August
2010, scoring 83 goals in 129

Doumbia was the Russian Premier
League's top scorer in 2011-12
and 2013-14, having also won
two league titles and two Russian
Cups at the Stadion Luzhniki in
Moscow.
That has prompted Roma to part
with a considerable sum for his

Serie A.
Doumbia, who has played in
Japan, Switzerland and Russia,
will debut for Roma after the
Africa Cup of Nations as the
Ivory Coast take on DR Congo in
Wednesdays first semi-final tie.
Roma coach Rudi Garcia was
delighted to have Doumbia, who
will play alongside compatriot

Jabateh must now win one of four
