Products and Properties

Desmodur/Desmophen for Coatings

Commercial Products

Desmodur /Desmophen

This brochure provides an overview of the commercial

products from our Desmodur/Desmophen range with
their key technical data and applications.
The information covers aliphatic and aromatic polyisocyanates (Desmodur), polyacrylate, polyester and
polyether polyols (Desmophen) as co-reactants for
polyisocyanates in 2K-PUR systems, the products
from the Desmocap, Desmolac and Desmotherm
families, and specialities.
In addition to the Desmodur/Desmophen products,
Bayer MaterialScience markets the Bayhydrol/
Bayhydur and Roskydal ranges. Bayer MaterialScience one of the worlds leading producers of coating raw materials therefore possesses a comprehensive portfolio of high-grade building blocks for
polyurethane coating systems.
Coating raw materials from Bayer MaterialScience meet
the many requirements of the coatings industry and are
used in a wide variety of applications. These include
automotive OEM finishing, transportation coating,
automotive refinishing, industrial coating, plastics
coating, corrosion protection, wood and furniture
finishing, structural protection, floor coatings and roof
membranes.

Basic chemical reactions
Film formation in classic two-pack coatings is
largely the result of addition reactions
between the isocyanate groups of the polyisocyanate and the hydroxyl groups of the
polyol compound to form substituted
polyurethanes.

This reaction occurs if the base products are

multifunctional, i.e. each molecule contains
at least two isocyanate or hydroxyl groups.
For a film to form, wich requires three-dimensional crosslinking, at least one of the coreactants should have three or more functional groups in the molecule.
Isocyanate groups may also react in a similar
way with other compounds containing
reactive hydrogen atoms, e.g. with amino and
imino compounds, carboxyl groups or, simplest
of all, water.

[1]

RN=C=O+ROH RNC=O
I

OR

In the case of moisture-curing one-pack

systems, the polyisocyanates cure through
the reaction of free isocyanates with water in
the form of atmospheric humidity. This reaction produces primary amino groups via un-

RN=C=O + H2O

RNH2 + CO2

[2a]
[2b]

stable carbamic acid and splits off carbon dioxide. The amino groups react directly with
isocyanates to form urea, as shown by the
formulae below:

RNH2 + RN=C=O RNCNR

I II I

H OH
PU coatings nearly always dry in the presence of atmospheric moisture. This is why, to
a lesser extent, the crosslinking reactions

NCO/OH ratio

shown in the formulae above also occur in

two-pack systems.

Eqivalent weight
The reactions between Desmodur and
Desmophen or any other hydroxyl-bearing
compound is a chemical reaction. The mixing
ratio is thus calculated from the number of
funtional groups in the co-reactants.

A simple way of calculating the equivalent

amounts of Desmodur and Desmophen is to
use the equivalent weights given for the supply forms being used. These can be found in
the relevant product information sheets or can
be calculated in the following way:

Desmodur :

Desmophen:

42
______
x 100
% NCO

17
_____
x 100
% OH

Basic principles

The stoichiometric relationship of NCO/OH=

1:1 is established when 1 equivalent of
Desmodur is combined with 1 equivalent of a
hydroxyl-bearing product, for example:
Desmodur L 75=
NCO equivalent weight approx. 324,
Desmophen 1100=
OH equivalent weight approx. 262,
In other words, the stoichiometric (100%)
crosslinking of 262 g Desmophen 1100
requires 324 g Desmodur L 75 .

Desmodur

The equivalent weight is a guide value. The

quantity of Desmodur required to provide
optimum results in a given application is best
determinated by trials. In practice, therefore,
more or less is used than the quantities calculated from the equivalent weights. These differences are expressed by the NCO/OH ratio of
the co-reactants used. The ratio for any
Desmodur/Desmophen combination can
be calculated as shown below:

NCO/OH ratio
or

pbw. Desmodur x 17 x % NCO

__________________________
pbw. Desmophen x 42 x %OH

NCO/OH ratio

pbw. Desmodur x equivalent weight Desmophen

___________________________________________
pbw. Desmophen x equivalent weigh Desmodur

The wide range of Desmodur products is

based on a comparatively small number of
monomeric isocyanates wich can be manufactured on an industrial scale.

TDI

MDI

HDI

IPDI

With the exception of MDI, the base monomers listet in the table cannot be used directly in the formulation of coatings because their
high vapour pressure does not allow safe
application in the context of industrial
hygiene.
Various methods can be used to manufacture
products with a higher molecular weight and
lower vapour pressure wich are safe to handle.
For example, polyols can be added to form
prepolymers, biurets can be formed or the diisocyanates can be trimerized to form polyisocyanurates.
