Basic chemical reactions
Film formation in classic two-pack coatings is
largely the result of addition reactions
between the isocyanate groups of the polyisocyanate and the hydroxyl groups of the
polyol compound to form substituted
polyurethanes.

stable carbamic acid and splits off carbon dioxide. The amino groups react directly with
isocyanates to form urea, as shown by the
formulae below:

PU coatings nearly always dry in the presence of atmospheric moisture. This is why, to
a lesser extent, the crosslinking reactions
NCO/OH ratio
Eqivalent weight
The reactions between Desmodur and
Desmophen or any other hydroxyl-bearing
compound is a chemical reaction. The mixing
ratio is thus calculated from the number of
funtional groups in the co-reactants.

With the exception of MDI, the base monomers listet in the table cannot be used directly in the formulation of coatings because their
high vapour pressure does not allow safe
application in the context of industrial
hygiene.
Various methods can be used to manufacture
products with a higher molecular weight and
lower vapour pressure wich are safe to handle.
For example, polyols can be added to form
prepolymers, biurets can be formed or the diisocyanates can be trimerized to form polyisocyanurates.
