World Marriage Day honors husband and wife as the foundation of the family, the basic unit of
society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life. The idea of
celebrating marriage began in Baton Rouge, La., in 1981, when couples encouraged the Mayor, the
Governor and the Bishop to proclaim St. Valentines Day as "We Believe in Marriage Day". The
event was so successful, the idea was presented to and was adopted by Worldwide Marriage
Encounter's National Leadership. By 1982, 43 Governors officially proclaimed the day and
celebrations spread to U.S. military bases in several foreign countries. In 1983, the name was
changed to "World Marriage Day", designated to be celebrated each year on the second Sunday in
February. In 1993, his Holiness, Pope John Paul II, imparted his Apostolic Blessings on World
Marriage Day. WMD celebrations continue to grow and spread to more countries and faith
expressions every year.

As we celebrate this weeks Marriage and Family Life, we are reminded once more of the
importance of each family in the Church and in society. With that, we are also reminded of our
responsibility to support and nurture our families so that they may continue to remain strong. This
is a mission for all Christians. Everybody in the family - husbands, wives, and children - are called
to make personal sacrifices and self-discipline to contribute to the spiritual growth and strength of
the family. Some of the things we are reminded that we need to do for our family are: constant
communication with each other, having meals together as a family, and most important of all, to
find time to pray together as a family. Our family is our most important treasure. We invest time
and efforts for our physical life, how much more must we invest time and efforts for the strength and
growth of the family.

Last week on the plane to Mexico City and back, I got the chance to read the book of Jason Evert
entitled Saint John Paul the Great, His Five Loves. It was given to me by another priest after
he read it and strongly recommended it. If you havent read the book yet, I strongly recommend it
for both for married and young adults. The biographical section is already very interesting. The
second half of the book tells you who Pope John Paul II was and is for the Church. His five great
lovesyoung people, human love, the Holy Eucharist, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the
Crossare his enduring testament. Of the five, I found the section on human love which deals
with Saint John Pauls writings on Love and Responsibility and his Theology of the Body, and
of the Cross to be the richest and possibly the most engaging if not the most helpful to Catholic
readers. It addresses what real love is based on our dignity as image and likeness of God. That
really loving a person is opposed to using a person. You will get the details if you will read this book
and I am pretty sure you will find it interesting and helpful!

This week let us continue to pray for all our families, married couples, those engaged, and even
those who are not planning to get married but are cohabitating. May Gods inspiration penetrate
their hearts that they would be able to follow Gods path for eternal joy.

I will be on my 5-day retreat this Monday to Friday. February 11th is

the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. It has been proven that lots of
people have received the gift of healing from their infirmities through
the intercession of Our Lady. Unfortunately, I cannot say mass at
our church that day, Wednesday, as I will be away. I would certainly
offer my mass that day for your intention and especially for our sick
brothers and sisters. I would ask you to pray the rosary especially on
that day to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, to pray for peace in the
world, and also for the sick. Let us also continue to pray for all our
sick brothers and sisters, those in the hospital, those who are
undergoing treatment, those in the nursing homes and assisted living,
and our homebound parishioners for healing and for the grace of
perseverance. God bless them and all of you always! - Fr. Roger

Knights of Columbus Soup/Chili Feed

The Girard/Arma Knights of Columbus Council is hosting their

addition to soup or chili, there will also be choice of coffee, tea, or
lemonade, and a dessert. Free will donations will be accepted.

Knights of Columbus Baby Shower

The Girard-Arma Knights of Columbus Council 7607 will be

conducting the 16th annual Pro-Life baby shower during the month

mothers-to-be who might otherwise choose abortion, and also to
benefit the unborn that might not otherwise be given the Right-ToLife". Parishioners are asked to donate new or used baby or
maternity clothing, baby and pregnancy supplies, diapers, bottles,
formula, etc. Receptacles will be placed in both churches for
depositing items. Thank you!

Membership Director, will also be attending from Supreme.

CYM Bake Sale

St. Michael CYM will be hosting a bake sale next weekend, Feb. 14
and 15, after both the Saturday and Sunday masses. The diocesan
CYM board chose Catholic missions as their charity this year, so our
youth are raising money for a Mission Project, and will be presenting
their offering at the upcoming DCYC (Diocesan Catholic Youth
Conference) in Wichita. Please plan to support them!

ReMembering Church Invitation

ReMembering Church is an outreach ministry to those who have left

the active practice of their Catholic faith and are considering a
return. Often it is difficult for those who've been away to take the first
step to more active participation. You could help by inviting them to
our sessions. Or better yet, offer to come with them! Sessions are held
from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at St. Mary's Elementary School, 301 E 9th St.,
at Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Pittsburg. We welcome those from
other parishes who are seeking to re-engage in their home church.
