Welcome to Tourism Authority

Established as a regulatory body under the Tourism Act 2002, the Tourism Authority (TA) became fully
operational with effect from July 2003. The TA is a body corporate and is administered and managed by a
Board.
The TA is responsible for licensing, regulating and supervising the activities of tourist enterprises, pleasure
crafts, skippers and canvassers. It also contributes to the uplifting of the destination and provides
technical assistance to Rodrigues.

Overview
Objectives of the Tourism Authority
(1) The objects of the Authority shall be (a) to optimise the social, economic and environmental benefits to Mauritius from tourism;
(b) to promote a sustainable tourism industry in Mauritius.
(2) The functions of the Authority shall be to (a) formulate such policy and nationally integrated planning for the tourism industry as it may consider
necessary;
(b) co-ordinate the activities of the various organisations concerned with the tourism industry, both in
the private and public sectors;
(c) issue guidelines for the development of the tourism industry;
(d) supervise the overall operations of tourist enterprises;
(e) establish a code of practice and standards for the carrying out or operation of tourist enterprises
and monitor compliance with such code of practice and established standards;
(f) advise the Minister on the structure of licence fees for the tourism industry;
(g) advise the Minister on legislative provisions likely to affect the tourism industry;
Functions/ Activities of the Tourism Authority

Licence, regulate and supervise tourist enterprises


o Inspect tourist enterprises to check the standards prior to the approval for a TEL.
o Monitor the tourist enterprises to ensure compliance with standards and suppress illegal, unsound and
improper practices.

Register, licence and regulate the use of pleasure crafts


o Survey of pleasure crafts to assess the seaworthiness.

Licence and supervise the activities of canvassers and skippers


o Conduct Training of skippers on Code de La Mer and safety & security measures.
o Conduct Competency Test (theoretical and practical examination for a skipper licence)

Uplifting of the tourist destination


o Cleaning of Tourist Areas
o Control of stray dogs
o Placement of buoys

Provide technical assistance to Rodrigues (with respects to Pleasure Crafts and Tourist Enterprises)

Qualifications A. (i)Cambridge School Certificate with credit in at least five subjects including English
Language, French and Mathematics or Principles of Accounts obtained at not more
than two sittings or
(ii) Passes not below Grade C in at least five subjects including English Language,
French, and Mathematics or Principles of Accounts obtained at not more than two
sittings at the General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level provided that at one
of the sittings, passes have been obtained either (i) in five subjects including English
Language with at least Grade C in any two subjects or (ii) in six subjects including
English Language with at least Grade C in any one subject.
Note:
Candidates not possessing a credit in English Language at the Cambridge School
Certificate will also be considered provided they possess passes in at least two
subjects at Principal Level and one subject at Subsidiary Level as well as the
General Paper obtained on one certificate at the Cambridge Higher School Certificate
Examinations.
B. A Cambridge Higher School Certificate or Passes in at least two subjects obtained on
one certificate at the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level OR
Equivalent qualifications to A and B above acceptable to the Board
C. Candidates should:
(i) possess good communication skills;
(ii) have a positive attitude towards work
(iii)have a general knowledge of national and international issues; and
(iv) be computer literate

Qualification at A above should have been obtained prior to qualification at B above.

Candidate should produce written evidence of knowledge claimed
