About UPAY
HOW WE STARTED
Back in May 2010, a bunch of socially motivated Engineers made an attempt for creating sustained
impact by educating the underprivileged children of rural villages. This passion led to the formation
of UPAY (Under Privileged Advancement by Youth) which serves as a platform for the like-minded
individuals to help the needful. On 20th May 2010, UPAY has started its first center in a small village
Kumbhari with the help of three members: Varun Shrivastava, Harshit Gupta & Sitesh Barche.
Initially there were only 15 children and 3 members in UPAY. On 19th Sept 2011, UPAY got
registered
under
The
Societies
Registration
Act,
1860
(Registration
No:
MAHARASHTRA/268/2011/BHANDARA) & Mumbai Public Trusts Act, 1950(Registration No: F14212). At present UPAY is running at 4 different centers across the country and more than 200
children are being facilitated by us.
THE VISION
To help in the development of poor & Underprivileged Section of society in all aspects of life so that
they can grow & match on par with the outside world.
Dear Members,
It gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction when I see the journey of UPAY, blossoming
from a newly born baby to a fully grown NGO. In May 2010, we have laid the foundation of this
beautiful group by starting a teaching centre for the under privileged children of Kumbhari Village.
That time we have not imagined that in a short span of 3 years UPAY will achieve so much of success.
UPAY has gone through many ups and downs and every time it has come back stronger. In the
beginning we were worried about its survival but it was the sheer hard work and dedication of all of
us which brought UPAY at new heights. The success of any group is the direct result of hard work
done by its team and I am thankful to GOD for blessing us with such a wonderful team to work with.
To start a good cause is a tough task but to keep it afloat is nothing less than an achievement.
Year 2012-13 has been one of the best and eventful years in UPAY history. One of the biggest
achievements is the results of 10th Board examination. The awesome performance by students will
keep our moral high and in future we will try to surpass our previous records. The highlights of the
year have been UPAY T-shirt Printing and a wonderful cultural program organized on the occasion of
Diwali & Having Mouda Tahseel Dar as Chief Guest. I appreciate the Commitment shown by the New
Volunteers who have joined UPAY in 2012. They have brought the fresh ideas in our group & more
importantly gave the much needed drive in right direction.
When we see a small kid begging at railway station or traffic signal, eating a leftover food with
no hope left in life. This makes us to think about them and we want to do something, yet we never get
time or opportunity .We can do a little more than that. In some sense, we are under an obligation to
try for change, because we can bring the change as we are the part of privileged few. UPAY gives us
an idea, an opportunity and a platform where we can be the part of an effort to give the better life to
the underprivileged section of society. If we are able to change the lives of few and can be the cause
of little smile even on the few dejected faces, our purpose of life will be completed. Whether we will
be here or not, UPAY will continue to blossom and will keep on bringing the radical changes in lives of
poor and dejected people.
With this hope, I congratulate all of you from bottom of my heart and all the best for future, with the
hope that you will take UPAY at the zenith of success.
With gratitude,
Founder -UPAY
How we Work!
The Current Schemes
1. Primary group: Our main focus is to develop this group. Children up to standard 5 belong to
this group. They are like newly planted trees, you can mold them in any direction. They are
the ones who are the future of next generation. The most remarkable and observable thing
about them is their enthusiasm. Some of them can barely speak but they bring their slates
and participate as much actively as they can. We use charts and pictures to teach this group.
2. Middle & Higher group: Children from 6th class to 12th participate in this group. Most of the
children do not know the basic concepts of addition and subtraction, so we have divided
them in groups based on their intellectual level. Few polytechnic college students are also
being taught by us.
3. Coaching for Navodaya examination: This scheme was introduced because of three major
reasons. Firstly, despite our sincere commitment, we realize that we cannot be a substitute
to regular quality school education which can provide all wherewithal and resources to
students. Therefore sending students to good schools is a better option. Secondly, Navodaya
provides free of cost education to villagers. Thus, it is a quality resource for poor and needy
people. Thirdly, through Navodaya scheme we are able to teach brighter students separately.
Teaching both bright and less active students together earlier slowed the learning process of
the brighter ones. We have 7 students competing for entrance in 6th standard and 3 students
for 9th standard Navodaya examination.
Challenges we face
1. Language problem:
We are having 3 centers in Maharashtra, 2 in utter Pradesh. In the Rural &
remote villages Children (Age 3-10) hardly understand any other language
other than local regional languages. In this matter, villagers have helped us a
lot in translating & teaching us their local language. Now even children have
started understanding our language through our actions.
2. Lack of awareness & willingness:
In remote places despite so many efforts from government there is a lack of
awareness regarding education. Poor people prefer to send their children for
work in very early age so that they can earn for their family. To bring those kids
in UPAY center & convince them for study is a very difficult task.
3. Rains & hot summers:
The rainy seasons are usually good and more so in the evenings during that
season. However, incessant rains have not deterred us. And we take
immense pride to say that we have not called a single scheduled class off
because of any reasons. Our members have come back from the class
sometimes totally wet but never did anyone complaint about it.
4. Lack of Resources:
No matter how much we try, this is a constraint that we cannot ignore.
Time & financial constraints always slow down our progress.

Running Projects
BRIDGE (BRidging the InDian gap by E-way )
Starting a centralized E-learning center in which video
tutorials and interactive sessions will be conducted at each
UPAY center by using internet, projector and computers.
This will provide the rural students an opportunity to
access the quality education and experts tutorial, and for
us it will reduce the No of volunteers required at each
center and will bridge the gap between urban & poor
children
