Kingmakers
in Iowa look
beyond gov
for 2016
BOB JORDAN @BOBJORDANAPP
TRENTON The seven Iowa political kingmakers
who tried to draft Gov. Chris Christie for the 2012 presidential race arent all on his bandwagon this time
around.
Embracing President Obama hurt him a lot since
then, said Gary Kirke, who led the team of Republican
activists from the Hawkeye State who met with Christie at the Drumthwacket governors four years ago.
Christie stayed on the sidelines.
Christie hasnt formally announced a 2016 presidential bid, but hes otherwise all-in. The same cannot be
said of those who sought to draft him for 2012.
A Christie campaign organization is being set up in
Iowa but support from Kirke and several others who
came to New Jersey four years ago isnt assured.
The governor was in Iowa Monday on a political trip,
his 12th visit to the early-voting state since 2010, with
his new Leadership Matters for America fundraising
political action committee paying his bills (though New
Jersey residents are covering expenses for his security
detail).
Christies 2011 visit with wealthy Republican donors
from Iowa embroiled the governor in an ethics scandal.
He initially refused to reimburse taxpayers for $2,500-
