February 15, 2015

Dear Eastminster Family,

While keeping track of the liturgical calendar, complete with references to days like Transfiguration Sunday, Ash Wednesday, Maundy
Thursday and the like can be confusing or even distracting, the calendar can also serve as an external prompt to help us get back in rhythm
with our Creator and Lord.

The Look of Love
Mark 12:28-31

After all, dont you and I often get out of step with God, heading off in our own
direction? Ash Wednesday, February 18, begins a 40 day season called Lent, a time
of reflecting on Jesus love, suffering, and sacrifice for each of us. These 4o days
offer an on-ramp for those of us that have wandered in body, mind or spirit to be
welcomed back by our Good Shepherd who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Where the temptation can be to reduce Lent to gestures like giving up chocolate, I
commend the 400 of you that have signed up to participate in the new small groups.
What a wonderful way to grow in Christ and to grow in community with one another. Lets all pray for each of these groups.
If you have not signed up for a small group, other opportunities for intentional
commitment include participating in the February 18, Ash Wednesday service at
7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary, receiving the daily devotionals written by Eastminster
members, making time to serve through an Eastminster mission endeavor, giving
a special financial gift or, planning now to attend the March 14-15 Celebration of
Faith. You dont need to do it all, but I do hope you will stop and reflect on how it is
God is calling you to follow him this Lent.
In Christ,
Brad
Please let us know! Again this past week we learned of a pastoral concern several days
after the fact. If you are aware of a circumstance warranting pastoral care, whether
your own or that of someone else in the church family, please let us know by contacting Mary Baldauf or the Rev. Lynn Grandsire. The church phone is 256-1654.
Marys email is mbaldauf@eastminsterpres.org and Lynns is lgrandsire@eastminsterpres.org.

Eastminster Day School, a ministry of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm

Rd., Columbia, is accepting applications for a full-time director. The school has approximately 200 students during the school year and approximately 160 during the summer
months. The director will have a bachelors degree in child development, early childhood
education or elementary education from an accredited college or university. Educational
equivalent of six (6) years minimum of child development experience recognized.
Interested applicants please call Bill Collins at 803-724-5360, or email Bill Collins at bcollins@eastminsterpres.org

We Need Your Devotional . . .

Would you like to write a brief devotional or reflection for Lent? We want to provide a
brief (roughly 100 words) devotion for the 40 days of Lent via e-mail. Write when the spirit
moves you, write from the heart or just write! Each and every one will be greatly appreciated by our congregation. Please send to devotional@eastminsterpres.org.

Souper Bowl Collection

Thank you, Eastminster, for your donation of $5,303 to the

Souper Bowl of Caring, through your donations placed in soup
pots and contributions placed in your offering envelopes. The
youth of Eastminster have chosen to give these funds to Jubilee
Academy. Photo - Middle and high school Sunday school listen to
Coach Tiny tell his testimony and story about Jubilee Academy.

Music Recital February 15, 3:00 PM

Eastminster choir member, Ginger Jones-Robinson, mezzosoprano, and Matthew Ganong, organist/pianist of the Church of the Epiphany, will be in
concert Sunday, February 15, in the Eastminster Sanctuary at 3:00 p.m. This concert is free
and open to the public! Invite friends!

Be a Lunch Buddy!

Would you like to help a child learn to read? Thirty-five Eastminster members share lunch
with their 4th grade lunch buddies at Bradley Elementary, two Tuesdays per month from
12:30 to 1:30 p.m., followed by work on reading skills. The kids read to their Lunch Buddies
and then take Accelerated Reader tests on school computers. The Lunch Buddies will tell you
it is a rewarding experience. Our challenge: there are 55 kids, so most Lunch Buddies have
two kids to assist in their reading exercises. Our goal: get to a one-to-one ratio so that each
child gets the full attention of a Lunch Buddy. Come give Lunch Buddies a try for the remainder of this semester. You will find it a worthwhile and fun ministry. If interested, please contact Julie McDaniel at the church office, jmcdaniel@eastminsterpres.org, or John McArthur at
jmcarthur@hsblawfirm.com.
