extension ladder it shall be secured both at the top and the
bottom in the following manner:
The top with a ladder grip- this is a device to manually
secure the top of the ladder from the ground level position
If not facilitated with a ladder grip then following shall
apply- Secure a rope to the rung of the ladder, twisting the

ladder, it shall be secured at least at the bottom in the
following manner:
The bottom of the ladder shall be held down by another
person
3.4 Ascending or descending using ladders- the user shall user the
centre of the ladder to ensure balancing of the ladder
3.5 Climbing off the ladder/aerial basket/structure over to the

big pylon hooks are alternately hooked to or anchoring point
as that the user are anchored at all times
4.1 The steps as described in 1,2,3 and 4 shall be used
4.2 Reaching the work position the pylon hooks (on the twin
lanyard with shock absorber) shall be attached to the anchor
point as described in 1
Choking the pylon hooks is not allowed
4.3 If there are no suitable anchoring points, create one by using
attachment sling in the following manner:
1) Loop/wrap the sling around the anchor point as many
times as possible to make it as short as possible
2) Attach the pylon hooks (on the twin lanyard with shock

4.4 Using and adjusting the work positioning lanyard (WPL)

1) See that any one of the connectors (depending on right or
left handed use of length adjustment) are connected to any
preferred side on the waist belts D ring and ensure that the
closing bar on the hook are locked close
2) Disconnect the other side connector and loop the work
positioning lanyard around the pole, structure or other
anchorage. Take note of the following:
When looping adjust the positioning lanyard so that a free
fall is always limited to 0.5meter maximum
Never loop around structures that are of small diameter or
that have small or sharp edges
Do not twist the work positioning lanyard
3) Place the chafe protector against the surface of the pole,
structure or other anchorage
4) Connect the other connector to the free D-ring on the
waist belt and ensure that the closing bar on the hook are
locked close
5) Check your distance to the pole, structure or other
anchorage and adjust your optimum working distance
before you lay back slowly in order to get tension in the
systemDecrease work positioning lanyard length- get closer to
pole structure or other anchorage
Reduce tension in the system by pushing your own
weight forward
At the same time pull the decrease work positioning
lanyard length strap
When finding right position release the strap and lay
back slowly
Increase work positioning lanyard length- get away from
pole, structure or other anchorage

Ladder (VML)

6.1 With the PML unsupported

1) The steps as described in 1,2,3,4 and 5 shall be used
2) When working from the ladders, the user shall not lean
sideways but use the centre of the ladder to ensure balancing
or change the ladder direction
3) Gaining access with PML/VML but work position is on
the structure then the steps as described in 6 shall be used
6.2 With the ladder supported
1) The steps as described in 1,2,3,4 and 5 shall be used (and 6
if applicable)
7.1 Ascending/Descending the transformer using a step- or short
ladder:
1) These ladders shall be secured at the bottom by means of
another person
2) Special care to be taken when ascending/descending the
transformer
3) Special care to be taken when climbing off the ladder and
onto the transformer or the other way around
7.2 If an anchoring point is available as described in step 1 or it is
possible to create an anchoring point as described in step 5.3
then the steps as described in 1,2,3 shall be followed

7. Working on transformers situated on

ground level in prohibited areas etc
Note:
In this scenario the twin lanyard with
shock absorber are not to be used for
practical and safety reasons e.g
Become a tripping hazard on the
top of the trfr
No anchoring point above the
user
