The next hormone is epinephrine, or adrenaline. This hormone is a natural secretion of
the adrenal glands in the human body. Its primary function in the human body is to assist the
body in coping with sudden surges of stress. When a person unexpectedly finds himself in a
stressful situation filled with fear or anger, a large amount of epinephrine is released into the
blood and the body responds with an increased heartbeat, higher blood pressure, and
conversion of glycogen into glucose for energy to enable the body to deal with the stress.
It is possible to extract epinephrine from the adrenal glands of animals or to
synthesize it chemically in order to put it to further use. It is used in the treatment of severe
asthma, where it relaxes the large muscles of the bronchi, the large air passages leading into
the lungs. It is also used in cases of severe allergic reaction or cardiac arrest.

the blood?
(A) severe asthma
(B) an increase in blood pressure
(C) higher heartbeat
(D) increased energy

(A) types of epinephrine hormone are contrasted
(B) the uses of epinephrine hormone are described
(C) how epinephrine hormone produced are explained

In 1956 a Brazilian scientist imported some special bees into Brazil from Africa. The
Africa bees were the same size as ordinary bees. But they were much stronger and more
dangerous. A sting from one of these bees can kill a man of even a buffalo very quickly.

The scientist imported the bees because he wanted to breed a new type of bees using
the African bees and ordinary European bees. He wanted to combine the strength of the
African bee with the safety of the European bee. Unfortunately, in 1957, 26 queen bees
escaped and began to breed in the jungles of Brazil. They spread very quickly and since that
time they have been moving slowly north-wards, covering 300 to 400 kilometers a year. Over
200 people have died after being stung by the killer bees, and thousands of animals have also
died. By March 1978 the killer bees had reached Venezuela and in 1980 they arrived in
Panama. If they continue to move at the same speed will reach the USA in 1988.
Today scientists from many different countries are trying to find ways of stopping the
killer bees. But if they cannot be stopped, the Americans, like the Brazilians, will have to
learn how to live with a new a very dangerous visitor.

Human are uniquely smart (8) ... all the other species in the planet. We are capable of
outstanding feats of technology and engineering. Then why are we so prone to making
mistake? And why do we tend to make the same ones time and time again? When Primate
Psychologist Laurie Santos from the Comparative Cognition Lab at Yale University posted
this question to her team, they were thinking in particular of the errors of judgement which

led to the recent collapse of the financial markets. Santos came to two possible (9) ... to this
question. Either humans have designed environments which are too complex for us to fully
understand, or we are biologically prone to making bad decisions.
In order to test this theories, the team selected a group of Brown Capuchin monkeys.
Monkeys were selected for the test because, as distant relatives of humans, they are
intelligent and have the capacity to learn. However, they are not influenced by any of the
technological or cultural environment which affect human decision-making. (10) ..., when put
into similar situations as humans, would make the same mistakes.

Text V
The most important thing that keeps a family together is the faith of each member that
when he or she has something to say, the others will listen. You shouldnt have to yell in order
to be heard. You should be able to say, I went downtown today and I saw these interesting
people, and give an account of your day, and the others should pay attention. This sort of
everyday storytelling is what holds people together. We can endure terrible hardships if we
get to tell somebody about them.
Authoritarian fathers get in the way of storytelling, and so do over-anxious mothers
and jealous brothers and sisters, but mostly what defeats us is noise and busyness. The people
around us deserve our best attention sometimes, and then we have to shut the world out. Turn
off the television. Turn off the radio. Dont read the newspaper. Live a smaller life. The
television is full of trash, the radio is full of noise and nonsense, and the newspaper is full of
horrors and disasters and stories about terrible things done by other peoples children and
all of it an open invitation to be self-righteous; those werent our children who beat up the old
lady and put her in the hospital.

Worst of all, the media tend to remove us from direct experience. When we are
fascinated by television and accept it as reality, the real world pales. American children dont
want to go on trips to strange places because it will mean missing their favorite shows. What
a pity.
We have more information than any other people in history, and we need a little less
of it and a little more experience. The terrible danger of the media is their power to diminish
our pleasure in the ordinary day, the richness and the goodness of a simple landscape and
ordinary small talk and stories.
16. The article says that everyday storytelling is important because ...
(A) it helps to improve childrens intelligence
(B) it one of the most important subjects at school
(C) it helps us when we experience happiness
(D) it helps bring a family together
(E) it can enhance childrens creative thinking
17. According to the text, the greatest obstacle to storytelling is ...
(A) strict fathers
(B) overanxious mothers
(C) envious brother
(D) resentful sisters
(E) noise and busyness
18. In the text the author says that we need more ...
(A) ordinary small talk in our families
(B) up-to-date information from the media
(C) laws to protect the media
(D) information to help us make everyday decisions
(E) stories about what other children do to their parents
19. We may infer from the text that there is a tendency of the media to ...
(A) make reality seem more vivid to us
(B) open our minds and see the world
(C) encourage a sense of adventure in us
(D) increase our reliance on other people
(E) prevent us from experiencing the real world
20. Sometimes we should just shut out the world because ...
(A) some TV programs are too interesting to miss
(B) we need to develop a sense of self-righteousness
(C) the information in the newspapers is mostly misleading
(D) we ought to pay more attention to the people around us
(E) the radio and the newspaper provide us with all the information we need
