Creating a Code
906-0039-00 Rev 6 EN
ROFIN Multiscan
The Create Code Screen shows the marking field area. Within the marking
area, marking fields such as text and date fields can be added or edited.
These will be displayed in the positions, sizes and fonts which have been
set up for each field when they are created. The marking area can be
zoomed in or out, centred on the current cursor position. Pressing the 'z'
button on the keyboard causes the display to zoom out, and pressing 'Shift'
and 'z' buttons together (upper case Z) causes the display to zoom in.
Guide lines are indicated in the marking field area at 10mm intervals. When
zooming out, the full extent of the marking area can be shown. The cursor
is moved by pressing one of the four arrow keys to the right of the display.
The cursor position in millimetres and the zoom factor are shown. When the
display is zoomed in so that the full marking field is not visible, moving the
cursor near the edge of the display causes the display to scroll.
I. Add Field / Edit Field
Allows a new field to be added to the mark code. The available field
types are displayed after 'Add Field' is selected. If the cursor is moved
onto an existing field, the field is highlighted and the Add Field button
label changes to identify the type of field. The field can then be edited if
required, or deleted by pressing the Delete key. To move a field, move
the cursor onto the field then press the shift button together with one of
the four arrow keys.

This screen is displayed when the 'Add Field' button is pressed. Mark
codes are created from individual fields. Fields contain information specific
to the user's requirements. They can include information such as fixed text,
date codes, time codes, incremental codes and external text fields and
logos. Each of these is described below.
I. Text
A text field is fixed text that remains unchanged for the duration of any
print run. This text could be 'Sell by', 'Manufactured by', a Company
name or any other text required by the user to be coded on each item.
II. Date
Date field can be formatted in different ways. The simplest form of date
code is 'DD/MM/YY'. This prints the current day, month and year in
numeric form, eg 22/04/01.The formatting characters DD, MM, YY are
substituted by the current day, month and year numbers when the
code is printed (See section 4.0).
III. Time
Time fields print the current system time using formatting characters
HH:MM:SS. They can be either 12 or 24 hour clock, with an am/pm
designator if required. The HH, MM, SS characters are substituted by
the current system time values when the code is printed (see section
4.0).
IV. Cancel
Return to the previous screen.
V. Operator
Operator fields are text fields which can be modified quickly by the
operator without going through the menu system (see 5.0)
906-0039-00 Rev 6 EN
VI. Increment
Incremental codes are codes which change based on either the
number of products printed or the time elapsed. Various types of
incremental code sequences are available, including a user-defined
sequence (see section 6.0).
VII. External Text
External text fields are fields which have content provided by an
external source. The external source sends ASCII character codes via
an RS232 serial communication port directly to the laser. The laser
inserts these codes at the appropriate position before printing the code
(see section 7.0).
VIII. Logo
Company logos which have been created for use on the ROFIN
Multiscan system or bitmaps can be downloaded to the ROFIN
Multiscan via an RS232 serial communication port. Logos can be
selected from a list, scaled and inserted as a marking field at the
required position (see section 8.0).
IX. Barcode
Various linear or two-dimensional barcode types may be selected (see
section 9.0).
3.2 Text Field
I. TEXT
Enter the characters in the text field. The cursor position can be moved
left or right using the arrow keys. To delete a character, position the
cursor to the left of the character and press the 'Del' (Delete) key. The
'TEXT' label on the screen shows the current 'Caps Lock' status. If
'TEXT' is shown, Caps Lock is ON, if 'text' is shown, Caps Lock is OFF.
II. Extended Chars
Display a list of additional characters which are not available on the
keyboard. If an extended character is selected from the list, it will be
inserted in the text field at the current cursor position (see section 3.3)

External text fields are fields which update under the control of a remote
communication device, for example a PC or PLC, via a serial
communication link.
I. Enter
Press the Enter key to move to the next field in the screen.
II. Number of characters
Enter a number of characters in the external text field, between 1 and
99.
III. Initial Text
Enter a start value. Marking of the field will start once the start value is
recognised.
IV. Field ID
Enter a value between 1 and 99. The field will be updated according to
the external data when the field identifier matches the identifier sent by
the remote program via the serial communication link.
906-0039-00 Rev 6 EN
V. Shot type
Set to either single or multi-shot.
Single - Only one product may be marked with the same external field
value. If another product is detected, before an updated field is
received, a fault occurs. Single shot mode operates with product detect
1 and 2 but not 'Product Present'.
Multi - More than one product can be marked with the same external
field value.
VI. Style
Set the font, height, width ratio, character spacing, angle, orientation
and field settings of the external text field (see Serial Control Protocol
supplement 906-0078-00).

Messages
Shorter messages will be entered into the remote field, right justified,
with the remaining characters filled with spaces. Longer messages will
loose the first n characters where n is the difference between the field
size and the message size.
RS232 port is set for:
9600 Baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity
The user must allow 10ms per byte in their total transmission time
calculations eg 15 characters in a single external field would take
approximately 150ms.
The printer will replace the existing remote field with the update text
from the remote device.

10.3 Detector
Use the Up and Down arrow keys to select the product detector. It may be
one of the following:A. Single #1
Sense detector 1 to initiate marking. If another product is sensed
before the mark is complete, a detector fault status occurs.
B. Single #2
Sense detector 2 to initiate marking. If another product is sensed
before the mark is complete, a detector fault status occurs.
C. Dual #1
A detector 1 transition to the active state must occur before detector 2,
but it does not need to remain in the active state when the product is
sensed by detector 2. Marking is initiated from the time that detector 2
becomes active. If another transition of detector 2 is sensed without
sensing detector 1, or if either detector transitions to the active state
again before the end of the mark, a detector fault status occurs.
D. Dual #2
A detector 2 transition to the active state must occur before detector 1,
but it does not need to remain in the active state when the product is
sensed by detector 1. Marking is initiated from the time that detector 1
becomes active. If another transition of detector 1 is sensed without
sensing detector 2, or if either detector transitions to the active state
again before the end of the mark, a detector fault status occurs.
E. Product present
Mark products while detector 1 sensing is active. The marking interval
is determined by the product pitch setting.
F. Both (long)
Both detector 1 and detector 2 must sense the product and be in the
active state simultaneously. If a detector delay is set, both detectors
must continue to be sensed until marking occurs, and the time delay is
timed from whichever detector is the second to become active. If
further transitions of detector 1 or 2 occur during the delay period, the
delay is re-started from the time that both detectors are active.
G. Both (short)
Both detector 1 and detector 2 must sense the product and be in the
active state simultaneously. Marking is initiated from whichever
detector is the second to become active. If a further detector transition
to the active state occurs before marking is complete, a detector fault
status occurs.
906-0039-00 Rev 6 EN
Settings 10-2
H. Either
Either detector 1 or detector 2 must transition to the active state. The
other detector can be either in the active or inactive state. After
sensing the product, the state of the other detector is ignored until the
product is marked. If the same detector transitions to the active state
again before marking is complete, a detector fault status occurs.
I. Gated Detector
Gated detector uses 2 signals to generate the product detect signal to
the laser.
Detector 1 is used to synchronise the laser marking to the product.
Detector 2 is used to gate (allow or deny) the signal from detector 1.
Detector 2

J. Gated Labeller Trigger Mode
The Gated Labeller trigger mode is an extension to the standard Gated
mode. As with the standard Gated mode, two detector signals are
required to function correctly.
The first detector is the product detect signal which is usually
generated from either a mechanical part of the carousel, or from a
tacho index pulse. This signal is generated whenever the production
line is moving, irrespective of whether products are available to be
coded.
The second signal is the gate signal which is active when the labeller is
applying labels to the pallets. This signal is used to enable/disable (or
gate) the product detect signal.
The user enters a parameter indicating the coding position in relation
to the controlling label tray. This allows coding of a product to be
delayed by the appropriate number of product detector pulses.
Additionally this allows any labels remaining on the pallets after the

10.8 Dual Fault Tolerant Marking on Detector 1
An alternative installation method allows coding only on detector 1, with
detector 2 used only for confirmation of a product.
In this example the Detector 2 delay is set to No Trigger by using the
down cursor after Detector 2 Delay has been set to 0. The product will be
marked 50mm after detector 1 is triggered.
If detector 2 is NOT triggered during the detector 1 delay period then a

If detector 2 is triggered without a preceding detector 1 signal then a

If more than one field settings group has been created, the settings for
each group can be selected by selecting the Group box and using the up
and down arrow to change the group number.
These parameters determine the laser power and optimisation of the
galvanometer / laser timing. They determine the maximum rate at which
products can be marked and the marking quality. The laser frequency and
duty (the proportion of the repetition period for which the laser is turned on)
both control the laser power.
In the diagrams that follow, the jumps before and after a character is drawn
are represented by dotted lines. The arrows indicate the direction of the
jumps. The diagrams assume drawing of characters in the normal direction,
left to right. Code optimisation can cause drawing of characters backwards
and from right to left. In this case the jumps to and from the character are
reversed and the effects shown in the following diagrams apply to the
opposite ends of the characters.
I. Frequency
The pulse frequency of the laser output. The range of frequencies is
100 - 50000 Hz. At a constant percentage duty, the average laser
power is controlled by the frequency. If the frequency is set too low, the
individual pulses of the laser will be visible on the marked characters.
II. Duty
The pulse width of the laser output. The minimum pulse width is 8 S,
the maximum duty is 85%. At a constant frequency, the average laser
power is determined by the duty.
III. Mark speed
The writing speed of the laser beam on the material to be marked. At
high mark speeds, some deterioration in marking quality will occur due
to the response time of the galvanometers to changes of movement.
Also, more laser power is required to mark a material because the
laser beam traverses the material for a shorter period of time.
906-0039-00 Rev 6 EN
Settings 10-12
The laser is switched off too late after the last vector, after the mirror
speed has decreased. The result is burn-in effects at the end point of
vectors.
LASER OFF DELAY TOO SHORT
The laser is switched off before the mirrors have reached the end
position of the mark. The result is an incomplete mark at the end of the
vector.
906-0039-00 Rev 6 EN
Settings 10-13
VI. On delay
The delay of the laser beam before turning it on. This delay
compensates for the lag of the galvanometer movement when starting
a new vector. It is used to avoid burn-in at the start of marking
characters.
LASER ON DELAY TOO LONG
The laser is switched on too late at the start of a mark. The result is
that the first part of the vector is not marked.
LASER ON DELAY TOO SHORT
The laser is switched on before the mirrors have reached the marking
speed. The result is burn-in effects at the start point of a mark.
VII. Jump delay
Jump delay compensates for the settling time of the galvanometer after
jumping to a new position. The total time for a jump is the jump time
(dependent on the jump speed and the distance jumped) plus the jump
delay.
JUMP DELAY TOO SHORT
Marking has started before the mirrors have settled after a jump. The
result is oscillation at the start of the mark.
906-0039-00 Rev 6 EN
Settings 10-14
The jump at the end of the mark occurs before the mirrors have
reached the end position of the mark. The result is that the end vector
is distorted in the direction of the jump.
MARK DELAY TOO LONG
There are no visible effects if the mark delay is too long, but the
marking time is increased.
IX. Polygon delay
Polygon delay compensates for the lag of the galvanometer when
changing direction during marking. The delay is scaled depending on
the change in angle of movement from the previous vector.
X. Mark time
The time to mark the current code.
XI. Minimum interval
The minimum interval required to mark the current code.

10.14 Optimisation
Code optimisation is the process of changing the sequence of marking the
fields in a mark code to achieve the best or fastest mark. For on-the-fly
marking, fields must be marked while they remain within the marking field,
after on-the-fly offsets are applied. The following examples show typical
mark codes and the optimisation techniques that can be applied.
I. On-the-fly optimisation example
The above screen shows the same code after 'Auto Optimise'. The
marking sequence has been re-arranged in several ways
906-0039-00 Rev 6 EN
Settings 10-16
All the vectors to be marked must fit within the available field. The
vectors which can have the largest offset applied to them, and track
the product furthest, in this case, are the vectors at the left of the mark
code. The optimisation arranges marking of the field which starts
nearest to the right first, and the field which starts furthest to the left
last. By positioning the mark code as far as possible at the left of the
marking field, the maximum tracking distance for the last vector is
achieved, as shown below.
906-0039-00 Rev 6 EN
Settings 10-17
For static marking, the 'auto optimise' minimises jump distances. The
result is as shown below.

I. Auto Optimise
For on-the-fly marking, apply an automatic offset of all the fields as far
as possible, to the left for left-to-right marking and so on. For the
example code shown above, applying this optimisation, positions the
code as shown below.
