END OF AN
ERA AT GCU
"I felt a certain sense of calling.
I knew this was the place for me."

STEPH SOLIS @STEPHMSOLIS

SISTER ROSEMARY JEFFRIES,

A cold spell will settle over the New Jersey coast

over the next week, bringing snow and frigid wind
chills that rival last years polar vortex conditions.
The Northeast will be blasted with arctic air and periodic snowfall starting today until Feb. 19, as a series of
low-pressure systems ushers in some of the coldest
temperatures of the season.
The Shore area is expected to get flurries today, Saturday and possibly next Tuesday. Some projections
warn that a more severe snowstorm could develop on
Saturday, potentially putting a damper on locals Valentines Day plans, though its too early to tell.
If I was betting on this, I would say that most likely
this is going to be focused on New England and Connecticut rather than New Jersey, said Steven DiMartino, meteorologist and owner of the NYNJPA weather
service, but still we have to keep an eye on it.
The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for much of the state, including
Monmouth and Ocean counties. However, meteorologist Jared Klein said its too early to tell whether a noreaster could dump heavy snow onto the Jersey Shore.
We do have some chances for snow over the next
several days, said Klein, who works at the Mount Holly
station of the National Weather Service. It doesnt necessarily mean were going to be getting big storms.
The worst is expected over the weekend, as a shot of
cold air comes in Friday followed by a more severe cold

LAKEWOOD Sister Rosemary Jeffries is no miracle worker, but dont tell that to the faithful of Georgian Court University.
When the 66-year-old sister took over the presidency of the former all-womens institution in 2001, its future seemed dim.
Buildings were in serious need of repair or replacement and Georgian Court was a long way from its aim
of achieving university status.
Georgian Court was very, very different when I
was there, said Keri Carlton, a chemist, alumni board
member and 1999 graduate of the school.
Georgian Court has been transformed on Jeffriess
watch. Not only has it achieved university status, it has
gone co-educational; there are now mens dormitories
and mens sports teams changes that helped spur a
46 percent increase in applications.
Further, a multimillion-dollar expansion has
brought new residence halls, a library, a student center, and a nationally-recognized wellness center.
But transformations are nothing new to Jeffries,

ASBURY PARK The historic rooftop band shell that
once hosted concerts on the citys waterfront soon
could be rehabilitated after sitting idle for the past 14
years.
Waterfront developer Madison Marquette announced Wednesday that it would submit design plans
next week for the Arthur Pryor Band Shell a move
that comes more than four years later than it initially
agreed to.
City officials say Madison Marquette has been in default of a developer agreement that required it to restore the band shell by Dec. 31, 2010. The newly elected
council sent the developer a letter in January requesting it present plans for the structure or face litigation.
Its very exciting, but Im sorry that its taken them
this long, Mayor John Moor said. If we had to send
them a letter of default to get them to the table ... I wish
they had done this like five years ago.
The Arthur Pryor Band Shell sits on top of the Fifth
Avenue pavilion and has the capacity to seat 200.
Residents say they recall local music groups per-
