DIVORCE IN THE EYES OF STUDENTS

Divorce-impact on students
By Ethan Teo (2a212)

It takes two to destroy a marriage. It takes just one wrong decision to

destroy a child. Margaret

THE WORST THING that ends up of marriage is divorce. Just hearing the term divorce will have a negative
impact and tone. Students are the ones who end up being the real victims of this selfish act. They would be
affected in their studies, the friends they make and their character. Their entire life will change. Not for the
better, but for the worse.
WHAT WILL REALLY be affected is their studies. In todays society, having a good qualification is very
important and it will determine and affect the rest of your live. What you want your life to be twenty years
later would be the amount of effort you put in when you are in school. However, no matter how much effort
a child whose parents are divorced puts in, it will all be useless. Brandon Wong is a 16 year old boy now
studying in Raffles Institution, one of the most prestigious secondary schools. He scored very well for his
primary school leaving examination and he also won many awards for the school in badminton. Girls
admired him and boys idolized him. However, one fateful day, his parents suddenly announced to him that
they were going to get a divorce. In the eyes of the 13 year old Brandon then, he was shocked and terrified.
According to him, I could not believe it! After this setback, he was depressed and he lacked the
confidence and mood to study any more. His grades dropped tremendously and the once smart and
cheerful boy became a sad and depressed boy. Divorce can really make a 180 degress change in a
students studies.

I could not believe it! Brandon said.

FRIENDS THEY MAKE will also be affected. When a students parents are divorced, they would tend to
not believe in true friends and all their friends that they make would tend to be a bad influence. They
would start to hang out with anyone and as long as they feel happy, the student would treat those bad
influences as friends. For example, a student whose parents are divorced meets a group of gangsters on
the road. They let him try out smoking and taking drugs. This is the type of friends that a student may make
if their parents are divorced. They would not believe in true, good friends but rather be contended with
friends who make themselves happy.

THEIR CHARACTER WILL also be affected. Due to the constant quarrellings of a students parents, they
would tend to be rasher and easily annoyed. They would be less polite but rather just do things without
thinking of the consequences. For example, when someone unintentionally knocks into him, the student
may just suddenly feel angry and would just vent his frustrations on the victim. This clearly illustrates how
much their character will be affected. Divorce causes this change and unless a specialist treats the student,
he would not be able to return to his old self.
THE IMPACT OF divorce is really great. A good, obedient, smart and handsome student would become a
totally different person. His whole life would be affected and this is all because of divorce. This selfish act
would not only impact the superficial side but would also affect the inner side. Inside him, the way he thinks
and carries himself about would change. Not for the better, but for the worse.
