Robert Elegant, a reporter for the Los Angeles Times, visited China during Maos
Cultural Revolution. This article contains an excerpt of Robert Elegants book, Maos
Great Revolution. In this excerpt, Elegant writes about the cruelty in Maos actions,
giving us another view from those that believed Mao was a terrible dictator.

Great Famine. This helped us gain an understanding of how Mao can be viewed as a
cruel dictator.

Dwayne Crispell, Halton Thomson, and Robert Nix, graduates of Armstrong University,

wrote this article about Maos writings. The thorough analysis of some of his works show
that his beliefs and ideas were for good causes. This lets us understand how some
people consider Mao a hero.

In the biography, Chairman Mao: Picture of a Dictator, the author explains Maos life,
both personal and political. The author has a tone of resentment towards Mao, which he
uses to paint Mao out as a terrible person and a poor leader. We used this to gain an
understanding of Maos personal life and gain diverse opinions on his leadership skills.

In the article, "The Legacy of Mao Zedong," the author explains Mao Zedong's legacy
and gives in-depth details about the differing views surrounding Mao's legacy. We used
this to gain an understanding of how Mao affected China, and how people thought of him
30 years after his death.

In this article, the author, Xiong Lei, writes about the people who visit Mao
Zedongs memorial every year to celebrate and respect Maos legacy. Lei talks about the
activities sponsored every year to learn about and honor Maos life. This article shows us
that despite Mao inadvertently killing millions of Chinese citizens, he is still honored as a
hero.

This is the transcript of a news report on Mao Zedong by PBS. In the transcript,
the reporters describe Maos legacy and how it is still clearly visible 30 years after his
death. This gave us a better understanding of how Mao affected his country.

BBC News created a website which explains Chinas Revolution, focusing
specifically on Mao Zedong. It goes into detail about the Long March, the Cultural
Revolution, and the Great Leap Forward, as well as many other parts of Maos
Revolution.

This article describes Mao Zedongs entire life, from his early life to his legacy
that can be seen today. It is also organized well, so we were easily able to find important
information on Maos early life, education, and the Cultural Revolution. Britannica is a
reliable source because it is part of a database and cites a lot of sources, most of which
were written in the 1900s.

In this biography, Mao Zedong the author gives a brief overview of Maos leadership,
but tells a lot about his early life and careers. We used this to gather information about
Maos early life and career to see how it influenced his leadership.

This article from Britannica gave us a lot of information about Maoism, a belief that Mao
had as well as his followers. It helps us see what Mao was trying to accomplish in his

Daniel Murphys article Mao focused on how people thought Mao as a terrifying
and cruel dictator. Murphys article helped me understand how much some people hated
Mao, while others saw him as a genius. Also, Murphy cites two authors, Alexander V.

Pantsov and Steven I. Levine. These two authors had access to official Soviet archives
containing documents regarding Mao Zedong, so this is a very reliable source.
Roderick, John. "Mao: Molder of China and Master of Chaos." Arizona Republic

John Roderick was an Associated Press correspondent who reported on events
happening in China in the 1940s. Therefore, this newspaper article is a reliable source
about how Mao Zedong changed from his productive and helpful 1940s self to his cruel
and chaotic self in the 1950s.

In Robert W. Smalls article Mao Zedong, Small gives an overview of Mao Zedongs
early life, as well as his accomplishments as Chairman of the Communist Party. This
article gave me an idea of how Mao succeeded in his goals to unite China. We know this
is a very reliable source, because the author cites Red Star Over China, a book written
by Edgar Snow. After some basic research, we discovered that the book was written in
the 1930s, and included interviews with Mao Zedong.

This biography, Mao Zedong, talks about his views and beliefs and how they impacted
him and his time in power. We used it to get inside his head and learn about what he
thought of the world and how he otherwise viewed it.

Lee Edwards, from the Heritage Foundation, shares the point of view of Mao Zedong
being a cruel dictator. He greatly emphasizes Maos attitude towards scholars, as well as
the death tolls of his actions.

This article gave us the information we needed about the Long March. It is a very
detailed account, and even has information from a U.S. reporter who was in China at the
time of the Long March, making it a primary source.

This is a simple biography about Mao Zedong and other important Chinese leaders. This
helped us gain an understanding about Maos accomplishments.

The author of this article, Jeremiah Jenne, is the Executive Director of one of the biggest
cultural exchange centers in China. He has written for three newspapers, two books, and
has been interviewed by several radio stations, including NPR. This makes his article
very reliable. In his article, he explains how Chinese people think of Mao Zedong,
varying from being a national hero and great leader to being a restrictive dictator. This
source really helps us understand the important legacy that Mao left behind.

Thesis
Mao Zedong was a controversial leader for an irrelevant China during the Cold War. After Mao
took rule, he transformed it into one of the most influential countries in the world; his legacys
traditions and policies still influence us to this day.
