Marines in Starfleet

Rank:
Name:

Colonel
Jael Rabinowich

Organization:Earth Surface Forces

Type of Information: Non-Cannon

This marine individual is identified in the Star Trek novel The Final Reflection by
John M. Ford, page 132. Apparent use of this organization is to patrol Earths surface,
escort important guests, maintain peace amongst the inhabitants, and when needed to
repel invasion forces. This organization works in joint operations with Starfleet
personnel, but falls under a different command structure. This book was copyright by
Paramount Pictures Corporation 1984.

Colonel

Organization:
Type of Information: Cannon

This marine individual is identified in the movie Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered
Country. Speculation is that Paramount disclaimed any involvement of marines, claiming
that the mention of this colonel was a mistake. This speculation has not been verified.

Organization:RRT
Type of Information: Cannon

This marine unit is identified in the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,
episode AR 115. The exact purpose of this organization is at best unclear. Speculation
leads many to believe that the organization, going by the acronym RRT, stands for
rapid response team. Further speculation believes that these were indeed a naval unit
vs. a marine unit. This later speculation seems to be supported by the fact that one of the
officers of the RRT was referenced as being a lieutenant.
However, since both marine and naval units utilize the name lieutenant for more
than one of their ranks, this last speculation is unable to be verified nor disproved. A last
speculation is in reference to current marine operations which require United States
marines to be address by naval rank when operating on naval craft. If this is the case, the
unit members may have indeed have been addressed by a naval rank, which again would
not prove anything.
The very nature of the team suggests a highly trained combat team which would
be inconsistent with Starfleets inherently peaceful approach towards exploration of the
galaxy. It is more likely that this was in fact a joint operation where two separate
organizations, perhaps Earth Surface Forces marines and Starfleet personnel, were
participating in a planetary invasion.

Rank: Naval
Name: N/A

Organization:Hazard Team
Type of Information: Non-Cannon

The Hazard Team is based off of the PC game Star Trek Elite Force versions I and
II. The duty of the Hazard Team is to assume missions to dangerous for a traditional away
team. These members receive extra training, and while not on an away mission fill roles
such as security officer, operations officers, and the like to which their main skills are
vested. Version II of this game was copyright Paramount Pictures 2003.
Because the characters in this game have naval ranks, this does not automatically
make them naval in origin. Current United States military practice is that while marines
are on board naval vessels, the marines will wear naval ranks and be addressed by the
same. This may be true of the characters in this game.
