Industry Canada (I.C.) has released a Standard Radio System Plan (SRSP), which outlines the technical requirements for
the operation of Mobile Broadband Services (MBS) in the bands 698-756 MHz and 777-787 MHz I.C., and auctioned the
700 MHz MBS in January 2014. I.C. expects that most cable operators will eventually transition to all-digital systems. The
upcoming deployment of LTE cellular technology in the 700 MHz band has increased awareness of potential signal ingress
and egress impairments between cellular and broadband cable operators. LTE operators will be pressuring cable operators
to minimize leakage in the LTE band. We review the design of a comprehensive shielding integrity monitoring solution that
addresses both concerns of Aeronautical/LTE band cable leakage impairments. We identify a proposed I.C. frequency
allocation plan for MBS services and potential technical impacts on broadband cable services. We present a shielding
integrity monitoring strategy based on best engineering practices and show the benefits of maintaining proper shielding
integrity both on upstream and downstream paths.
JDSU, Tim Yount, Market JDSU, Dev. Manager, Fiber Network Testing
The growing need for bandwidth capacity has fueled the development of the 100G based network. In addition, the global
shift toward the use of OTN client interfaces makes the adoption of stringent test procedures an important consideration.
We discuss recent developments in high-speed networking, specifically with respect to core backbone technologies. We
address the ongoing 100G wave, how 40G technology is being used as an interim step toward a higher capacity core, and
how test solutions are keeping pace both for provisioning and maintaining these critical networks. We provide a basic
overview of 100Gig technologies, including a guide to understand the differences between client-side and line-side 100G
deployments. We discuss fiber infrastructure testing considerations on both sides, including the implications of coherent
detection & dual polarization transmission.
MEGGER, Ed Rousselot, Datacom Technical Sales
The two main battery chemistries used today are lead-acid and nickel-cadmium. Future chemistries include lithium, prevalent
in portable battery systems, but not stationary systems. With refinements over the decades, it has become a critically
important back-up power source. Refinements include improved alloys, grid designs, jar and cover materials and improved
jar-to-cover and post seals. Arguably, the most revolutionary development was the valve-regulated development. Many
similar improvements in nickel-cadmium chemistry have been developed over the years. We discover best practices on
testing battery life, what can be done to improve battery life and how to track battery health. Is your equipment adequately
backed up?

With the arrival of 4G services, bandwidth requirements are increasing rapidly to accommodate the growth of data traffic.
Most operators will require fiber connectivity to towers to upgrade their networks to 4G or LTE services.Wireless Backhaul
Providers can provide fiber connectivity at a very competitive price by using CWDM technology to interconnect cellular
sites back to the Mobile Switching Centers (MSC). Hardened CWDM modules can be installed in outside plant cabinets or
splice enclosures and can provide wavelength connectivity to multiple wireless operators, thereby reducing the overall cost
of the transport architecture. Also covered are various reliable designs suitable for these applications, supporting both
simplicity of operation and flexibility of design.

insight into the problems that network tools cannot see. Learn the basics of interference and why a spectrum analyzer is
the best tool for identifying RF signals that cause you grief.
Session covers the most common types of interference found today: Co-channel, Adjacent Channel, 3rd Order InterModulation. We learn how to use a spectrum analyzer to measure interference: Basic spectrum analyzer controls, swept
and real-time spectrum analysis, Spectrogram recording, tips and tricks to optimize speed and dynamic range.
Session illustrates logging data with a spectrum analyzer: Geo-referenced data acquisition, acquired data with Google

Subscriber consumption continues to grow at 50% CAGR and the relative near-term future requires a fundamental shift in
technology. Building new greenfield FTTH plant is the same or even more cost-effective than building new HFC, but what
do we do about brownfield? Changes are necessary in physical plant and overall technology, but the paces of technology
advancement means careful planning to do just enough to meet the demand without spending capital. This session
examines technology options for breathing more life into old plant.

With the advent of the Cloud, more applications are being ported from private datacenters on private networks to generalpurpose clouds built using virtualized, multi-tenanted infrastructure. This new way of operating networks is enabled by the
introduction of an SDN framework. SDN will facilitate network automation across IP and Optical networks by providing a
global view and coordinated provisioning and optimization across layers L0-L3, resulting in increased operational efficiency.
SDN will also provide better programmability and service instantiation across IP/Optical networks for Data Center
Interconnection and Cloud services providing service acceleration.

This session covers new techniques to support provisioning and troubleshooting a network beyond layers 2 & 3. RFC6349 defines high-speed TCP testing and application of this standard, which is now vital since traditional troubleshooting
methods often fall short in modern networks. In cases where actual TCP throughput does not equal the ideal, RFC 6349
also provides practical guidelines for tuning the network and/or end hosts. We review a specific implementation of RFC6349, plus how and when to use it in your network.

Accurate cable locates are a critical step in preventing damage, and the resulting outages and repairs. Traditional methods,
however, can quickly but quietly escalate network management costs and offer no insights into the integrity of buried cable.
In this session, well explore technology that helps you: 1) significantly reduce costs; 2) make informed maintenance
decisions; and 3) ensure that your fiber optic network is operating at optimum levels.

Operators are evaluating their options when it comes to network upgrade to offer high-speed Internet services, VOD and
SDV using IP for delivery to the end users.
For those looking for a cost effective upgrade of their existing network and want to use much of the existing infrastructure,
this evolutionary path leads to deep fiber deployment with fiber nodes serving between 100 and 250 subscribers.
Various benefits in moving the CMTS from the head end to deploy it in the field will be reviewed. As operators move to
distributed CMTS, benefits will become clear and may ultimately make the future move to fiber-to-the home unnecessary.

FTTX Efficient Use & Benefits of New and Different Technologies for
MDU & Building Applications
SALON F
SALON G
This session focuses on new technologies on the market, and highlight areas where the different technologies can be used
most efficiently in different building designs, from a time and value standpoint. In the past several years, a wide variety of
new technologies have been developed to assist service providers for deployments into new buildings for FTTH, FTTB,
and DAS installations. Based primarily on new bend insensitive fibers, new solutions for these applications are being
developed at a rapid pace.

The expectations for Wi-Fi are growing from nice to have to must have. In the past Wi-Fi was used mostly for checking
email and basic Internet content consumption. Now, Wi-Fi is expected to handle media streaming and secure
communications. With the increase in expectation is the demand for higher quality Wi-Fi service; faster throughput,
persistent connections, uninterrupted roaming, the list goes on. This presentation will provide you a basic technical
understanding of Wi-Fi, what affects performance and what you can do to satisfy customer demands.

One of the bigger hurdles in deploying Indoor Distributed Antenna System, (IDAS) networks is how to power the distributed
remote nodes. Providers wrestle with where to locate the power system, whether battery backup is required, and
implications of the power system size and shape on aesthetics of the venue. Some service providers avoid placing power
systems and batteries at the node by powering them over copper cable with current supplied by the host power system.
We describe how this line powering technique works, how to engineer a site using this approach, and what the pros and
cons of this method are. We address requirements for the copper cables connecting the nodes to the host, with emphasis
on ensuring compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code and CSA.

Session focuses on SDN and NFV in the context of the wide area network - specifically the mobile core, aggregation of
carrier networks and Data Center interconnect. We cover the five stages to implementing SDN and NFV:
Discovery: Uncover initial services or applications that can to be virtualized or automated.
Simplification: Simplify existing infrastructure in preparation for software automation and control
Automation & Control: A single pane of glass to manage and control both networks and services.
Orchestration: Combine WAN with data centre resources.
Virtualization: Hardware appliances and platforms transition to software-defined virtual machines.

Wireless networks present a unique set of management issues with the 2.4GHz & 5GHz band becoming increasingly
congested. Tools are available to help identify and trouble shoot the most congested of wireless environments through
detection and display of the RF energy that surrounds you.
WiSpy Chanalyzer makes it easier to spot the true congestion of both Wi-Fi and non-Wi-Fi devices on every 802.11 channel
instantaneously. Learn how these tools can help to optimize a wireless network by isolating persistent interference and
help improve your wireless environment.
