Module 1: Prestressing Systems and Material Properties (4 hours)
Topics Brief history; Types of prestressing: pretensioning and post-tensioning, linear and circular prestressing, external and internal prestressing, full and partial prestressing, uniaxial and biaxial prestressing. Advantages and disadvantages of prestressing, advantages of precast members; prestressing systems: definitions of common terms in prestressing; pretensioning devices, post-tensioning devices, anchorage devices, transfer of prestress, grouting. Material properties: aggregates, cement, concrete, allowable stresses, creep, shrinkage. Material properties: steel, allowable stresses, relaxation, fatigue.
Module 2: Losses in Prestress (3 hours)
Topics Immediate losses: elastic shortening. Friction and anchorage slip, Force flow diagram. Time dependent losses: creep, shrinkage, relaxation; IS Code provisions, PCI step -by-step procedure.

Module 3: Analysis of Members (6 hours)
Topics Analysis of members under axial load. Analysis of members under flexure at service loads: stress concept, force concept, load balancing concept. Cracking moment, kern point, pressure line, concept of limiting zone. Analysis of rectangular sections under flexure at ultimate loads: equations of equilibrium and compatibility and constitutive models, stress block for concrete, solution procedure, minimum and maximum amount of prestressed reinforcement. Analysis of flanged sections under flexure at ultimate loads. Analysis of partially prestressed sections under flexure at ultimate loads.
Module 4: Design of Members for Flexure (7 hours)
Topics Design based on service loads: preliminary design. Final design for Type I member (no tensile stress). Final design for Type II (limited tensile stress) and TYPE III (limited cracking) members. Choice of cross section: flexural efficiency; Determination of limiting zone; Post-tension in stress. Magnels graphical method. Design based on ultimate loads. Detailing requirement.

Module 5: Analysis and Design for shear and torsion (7 hours)
Topics Analysis for shear: principal stress trajectories of linear elastic beams, crack Patters, modes of failure, component of shear resistance. Capacity for web shear cracking capacity for flexural shear cracking. Design of shear reinforcement detailing requirements, design steps. Analysis for torsion behavior of linear elastic beams, crack pattern. Modes of failure, components of torsion resistance. Design of torsion reinforcement. Detailing requirements, design steps.
