Chemical composition of Mono Crystal Nickel Base Superalloys

This article aims on reviewing the categorization and chemistry of single crystal nickel
base superalloys. The influence of alloy composition to 6th generation is evaluated.
Preface
Nickel based suprealloys are employed in producing aircraft engine turbine blades,
particularly for first high pressure stage of gas turbines, as these have outstanding
material characteristics at the elevated temperature applications. Blades are used
under conditions of high thermal and mechanical load. Many of these alloys are
precipitate strengthen, however the precipitates are rational with matrix.
Chemical Composition
Commercial superalloys consist of nickel, aluminum and titanium. Chromium and
aluminum are essential for oxidation resistance, minor magnitudes of Yttrium help the
oxide layer to cohere to the substrate. Polycrystalline superalloys comprise grain
boundary strengthening elements like boron and zirconium that segregate to the
limits. The resultant reduction in grain boundary energy is linked with higher creep
strength and ductility when the mechanism of damage includes grain decohesion.
Carbide producers such as carbon, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, niobium,
tantalum, titanium and hafnium are utilized to strengthen the grain boundaries as
these attempts to precipitate and thus decrease the tendency for grain boundary
sliding.
Elements like cobalt, iron, chromium, niobium, tantalum, molybdenum, tungsten,
vanadium, titanium and aluminum are also solid solution strengtheners both in
gamma and gamma prime phase. There are natural limits to the concentrations that
can be included without inducing precipitation. It is specifically essential to prevent
specific embrittling phases like Laves and Sigma. Latest Superalloys consist of
Rhenium. Durst and Goken in their study proved that Rhenium increases strength and
elastic modulus of matrix effectively.
Following figure shows that how alloying composition is grouped with some unity in
the periodic system. The first class comprises of elements that refer and constitute
the face centered cubic austenitic gamma matrix.

These belong to groups fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth and include nickel, cobalt, iron,
ruthenium, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten. 2nd section of elements

classification to and create gamma prime precipitate Ni3X. These elements belong to
groups 3rd, 4th and 5th and include titanium, niobium, tantalum, hafnium and
aluminum. Boron, carbon and zirconium create a 3rd section of elements that
segregate to grain limits, these elements belong to 2nd, 3rd and 4th groups and have
very unusual.
