FEBRUARY 1987

Coeur d'Haiti
Haiti Christianville Outreach Evangelism Unto Rural Haiti
Dear Friends in Christ,

For the past two years, during December

and January, the church at Ticousin has
held a revival. This year, with more
baptized members, and a nucleus of those
who have grown spiritually, an extra
effort was made by all to really reach
out in the community surrounding the church,
Members visited homes and spoke to friends.
The attendance was high the first night of
the revival. So many lifted up their voice
in song that the church could be heard
from miles around. The second night more
came; some to see what was going on, and
others with a true desire to learn more
about the Lord Jesus,

Keeping an attendance record was diff

icult!

The church was so crowded that

many could find standing room only, both

inside and outside the shelter.

I t is

estimated that the highest attendance was

350 to AGO people one night!

The revival put the church off on a

positive foot for 1987.

Many made decisions

to leam more about Christ Jesus, and the

church leaders are following up on these

people. As a result, three people have
been baptized. Many more are considering
making a decision. We would appreciate
your prayers in their behalf!

AN ALL OUT EFFORT TO REACH OUR WORLD!

It is a real joy to be able to share
with you the victories and accomplishments

of God*s work in Haiti! Yet, if this were

all we were to share, we would leave you
with a very lop-sided picture of what is!

Accomplishments have been made, and people

are being added to God*s family, but not
without constant struggle, wrestling with

We offer our deepest Thanks to you, for

your prayers and help in this endeavor!

There are several young Christian men

being trained as leaders in the church.

They too, are faced with similar struggles.

One young man, Jonel, told the church of
an agreement he made with his cousin, who is

also a member of the church.

Their agree

ment was that if one became sick, the other

would stay at his house with him. The reason

being, to make sure his parents did not take

him to the witchdoctor for healing.

It has only been through the power of pray

er and God's Word that the tight hold of voo
doo has begun to be broken! Please keep
these young men and the church at large in
your prayers!

Thank You for working hand in hand with us

to help those of like precious faith in
Haiti!

This was also a very special day for

another member of the church in Ticousin!

Nine years ago, Wayne came to Haiti with

his family from Jamaica!

They were a real encouragement

far away! We received our last Christmas

card January 28!!

God Bless You!

A LOVELY QUIET SPOT

The porch for our new Dental Clinic given by FAME for the children of Haiti, pro
vides a lovely quiet spot for a noonday class for our "12 disciples". These 12 boys
have expressed a keen interest for leadership in Christianvllle's outreach. Most of
them are in the Graduating Class for this year. We are still not sure if they will
pass since school life last year was radically interrupted with the revolution and
all of Haiti's schools suffered set-backs. But this does not deter the spirits of
these young men. They are keen "servants", eager to be of use in every area of
service. Early on Sunday mornings you will find them tidying the front yard of the
church, moving benches for Sunday School, teaching younger children, travelling
out with the preachers to the Mountain and Jean Jean churches, or helping with
Children's Church. Each one is useful in some way ... and happily useful, at that.

A TRADE SCHOOL TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL

Here is the potential we need for Christianville's future... young men who could be
the teachers we need, the supervisors in farm work, the high quality workers in
clinics, nutrition program, in craft work. All of these boys are dedicated Christians
yet still studying and struggling to be leaders who will be pleasing to God. Their
teacher, David Marcelin (extreme left) has been their youtti minister for four years
and is now Minister for the Jean Jean church. The boys are eager for their turn to
go with David to help in the services at Jean Jean.
Recently five of our church young people including three of this group went on
foot to the Mountain Church to hold another evangelistic meeting for five days. At
the end of their time the people begged them to stay for another week for they en
joyed the boys and their preaching so much. But our young people must have a
means of livelihood.

This most urgent and challenging need Is now at our heart's door. We must res
pond to it. And the answer can be realized in expanding the classes we have
already begun... in agriculture, animal husbandry, arts and crafts, tailoring, sewing
and others. We have decided to make a serious start this summer and then

hopefully build into our program a trade school. Thus we will lay the foundation
for trades and evangelism to go hand in hand. And in this we will keep the com
mission of Jesus, "go ye into all the world...". Our goal is not to hire ready-made

preachers. We are raising our own true servants who like the great Apostle Paul
will "make tents" and spread the Gospel.

A "TURNED-ON" TEAM !

Behind the teenage boys now turning into young men is a small but strong group
of leaders. Each Monday night for well over a year now, we have held a meeting
with our "team", planning, reporting, praying, studying to improve our
evangelistic outreach.

Here you see our team.

Left to right front row are two brothers, Henry Claude Joseph assistant at Jean

Jean and Arvelt teaching the mens' class at Christianvllle and preaching once a
month at Grassier; Robinson Joseph, Minister for Jean Jean, Sam Streu co-worker

in every area, Lucien Dorcelin, Minister for Christianville, and Stewart Kelly, Farm
Manager. Sandy and Carol are also a part of the group.

Together the team is making plans to start a fourth church in another needy area.
Our churches are growing. Christianville averages
just over 300 while the Mt. Church and Jean Jean are

both running close to 100 on Sundays. Weddings and

baptisms are frequent and teaching classes are held
regularly in several areas. We covet your prayers !
OUR "TIMOTHY"

In the month of May Jerome Prlnston, our Haitian

"Timothy" graduated with a degree in Ministry at
Johnson BibleCollege after four wonderful years. He
has spent his summers working here at Christianville
and again this year he will lead our VBS. Now Jerome

desires to gain his Master's degree in Christian

Education hoping to do it in a year and a half. In

August he will be married to a lovely Haitian girl he

met.in New York and together they plan to assume,
the leadership in Christian Education here with us.

We are very proud of the work he did at Johnson as

well as his work in Music at the University of Tenn.

We look forward eagerly to his final return to Chris

tianville hopefully by December 1988. If you would

like to include a gift of encouragement to Jerome
along with your next gift to Christianville, he would
be very grateful.

ANOTHER GREAT VISIT

Dr. Alan Handt has visited and worked with us on several occasions during the
past five years. His visit this spring has been the most rewarding yet. Dr. Handt is
not only one of America's outstanding Doctors but he is versatile in many areas.
One day you would see him in the Clinic with Sandy, after clinic you could see him
on the ground under the truck repairing brakes while still another time he.would
be teaching classes in Bible lessons or preaching in the church.

His wife Debbie, also a Doctor, kept herself busy in the clinic, at the sewing
machine, just being helpful at any task while she kept an eye on their 8 year old
daughter. We are praying for a return visit from them. And hopefully for a much
longer period.
f^eanwhiie we are thankful for their help and encouragement. They have been par
ticularly helpful with the medical needs of our family.

MEET PAUL AND RACHEL RONK

Help is on the way ! While in College
at Johnson, Jerome met a fine young
couple who were interested in being
missionaries and before they could
realize it they were flying to Haiti to
look over the needs here. Paul has his

degree in the Ministry but desires to

use his life as a mission farmer,
preaching on Sundays. Paul is a
seasoned famer from his boyhood
days and is experienced in many
areas of farm life. He has also had ex

perience in management and was

very successful in this when he left it
to study at Johnson.
Rachel and Paul both fell In love with
Christianville and we with them ! Now

they have returned to raise their

funds to join us by the latest October

1st. and with them will come their 10
month old baby !

STEPS TO THE FUTURE

Midnight oil on the book work, sweat and toil on the ground, decisions, decisions,
trucking, shipping, bargaining for prices... all of these together form the founda
tion and growth of our new school building. Yes, these are steps building steps

to the future for many many boys and girls. Our friends might say we started with
nothing. True it was, we had no money. But we had the most valuable asset
FAITH !

For the WORD says that "without FAITH it is impossible to please God. Daily we
are proving the promise of God that Hewouldmeet everyneed. And the building is

exciting. The roof is finished and now the walls are being closed in. Acontainer of
supplies, electrical, plumbing, doors, etc. is arriving from Miami. First Christian
Church in Boca Raton got behind the ordering and shipping and hurried these

things off to us. They are gifts from many of you who care about our children's
future. We are grateful.

From this point on there will be expenses for labor, cement, sand and blocks. We
will also need windows and tiles for the floor. Our girls are especially eager to see

the kitchen completed so that they can begin cooking classes. We need help in
this area, too ... a couple who would be willing to come as cook and maintenance

supervisor. Here is an excellent way to serve the Lord ina third world country. The
reward of joy in service is reallyrich I Please pray with us for this couple. Might it
be you ?

WHAT ARE HER CHANCES FOR LIFE ?

We came across Marie while climbing the mountain to our Nutrition Outpost. Her'

smile was typical of any Haitian child on meeting a passer-by. Over her shoulder'
was the household bucket that plainly told where she was going ... to carry water
for the family. Perhaps she would carry it a mile, half mile, or maybe much farther.
Ordinarily her future would offer her very little more than carrying water, tilling the
field, selling in the market and raising more babies to continue the cycle of hard
work, hunger and illiteracy.
What are her chances ?

They could be good. If Marie finds a place in Christianville School her life could
change drastically. She would receive good nourishment, education and the hope
of a better life.

Our Sponsors are directly responsible for changing the lives of many Haitian
children already. Daily we watch them grow and change. It's beautiful. But the
need is still great. You can help us find Marie and her brother and her sister. And
perhaps her cousins, too.

With our new school building there is hope, but this hope can only be realized as
we find more and more Sponsors who will tuck one little child into their own heart
and lives and share the great blessing of life's gifts.
Your little Marie is waiting for you. Your little Joseph is waiting, too. Won't you
write us today ?

COMPASSION PLUS I
What a blessing Sandy is ! Her continual oncall-24 hours-a-day compassion is simply

not of this world. Nothing is ever too much

for Sandy. There are times when we hide her
away for a little rest and we "send the
multitudes away." Sandy rejoices with heal

ings, weeps with those who mourne, prays

with those in need, runs her van as an am

bulance, sits all night with the dying and

faces morning after morning crowds of sick
and hurting people who gather at the clinic
doors.

Children like these pictured here are not the

norm for our clinic but they are also there

much too often. They are loved by Sandy
often back to health but sometimes they
come too late. After initial treatment these

children are registered in the Nutrition ProNANCY. AGE 5

WEIGHED IN AT 16 lb.

gram and remain there until they reach a

healthy weight and sturdy body. From there
we have been able to take 100 children into

our Kindergarten where they continue to be

fed and cared and educated.

Christianville reaches out a hand of loving

help to the needy in the Name of Jesus.
Over 70,000 have had first registrations in
the Clinic Sandy needs help I Please pray
with us for a Doctor and a Nurse. The need

is vast the opportunity exciting.

P.S. We are also in need of visiting Den

tists for our Dental Clinic. A week or two of

volunteer services can be a challenging and

wonderful experience for your Dentist. Why

not speak with him about a trip here ?
THIS LITTLE ONE
CAME TOO LATE

'

Ht - '

The Evangel's cover this Issue is a scene inside the courtyard of our house where
our school children are seated around a cement garden pool. This courtyard was
given by Mrs. Herb Swearingen in Crawfordsville, Indiana. It has been a beautiful

gift and very helpful to our work. Children are gathered here often for receiving
gifts, fitting new shoes (as you see in the picture above) fitting uniforms, special
meetings, special luncheons for school teachers or visiting work teams. We are
thankful for this space that lends itself to so many activities. This is also the place
where we have The Annual Missionary Retreat for our missionaries to Haiti.

There is Sue Reed, a volunteer who spent over three months with us helping in
every area. Sue came to us through our good friends at Food For The Poor.

We have had many wonderful visitors this year who have come to help us with the
work. We can hardly begin to tell you all of the nice things they have done. And we
also can hardly begin to tell you who
all of these good friends are there

just isn't space. One group came

from Milligan College, an excellent
hard working youth team. You see
them here with Leonard and Marlene
Seattle,

their

leaders.

Several

of

Sam's friends came from Canada,

too. It is all of this good help that
makes it possible for us to grow and
to help more children. And with many,
they leave a little of their heart here

too, often in a child they have chosen

to Sponsor. Our most sincere thanks

and love to all who help I

WHAT WOULD YOUR ANSWER BE?

L
^

Senior members of our school band pose here for a picture for you. These boys

began studying music several years ago. Now they are ready to graduate from
Christianville School and they want to continue their music. Do you think it would
be nice to allow our boys to stay in the band for a few more years ? We have been

considering this and we think the answer will be to keep them with us. fvlaybe
some of them will be teachers and will be able to earn their living. They play very

nicely oh, we wish you could hearthem ITheiruniforms are bright red jackets,
red and white caps, black ties and white shirts and pants. They look reallysmart!
And of course, we are proud of them.

Five new small ponds have been added to our fish project. These lovelyponds are
full of baby fish that are hatching to be put into the big pond. Here you see some
of United Nations workers netting some of the small fish to share with other mis

sion projects in Haiti. Theywill also give manyof the baby fish to our boys whoare
making ponds near their homes. The baby fish are very very tiny so that you can
not see them in the net. The big pond is full of large fish again and this summer we

hopeto have another good harvest. This means fish forour children in school and
some for them .to take home for dinner.

"4^

Boys and Girls, can you imagine how ex

cited our Jean Jean children were when

they saw their new school benches being

assembled and the building being made
ready for school for them ? It was an ex

citing time for them for they had often long

ed to go to school but there was no

possibility for them. Now they have a good

Christian School. Here you see the Advent
Lutheran teens helping Sam set up the ben
ches. It was a big days' work.

PIGGY-BACK
When you come to Christianville Clinic if
you don't have a car, you will have to walk.
There

are

no

busses

back

here

in

the

"boonies". Little Louisa came to Sandy at

the clinic every day to have her foot "dress
ed". Her mother piggy-backs her all the way.
This is because her foot has a very very bad
infection and she cannot walk. For awhile
we were afraid she would lose her foot and

leg but now, with Sandy's tender daily care

over the past four months, Louisa is
gradually getting better. Sandy feeds her

good food to help her blood to get strong

and then keeps her foot very clean. We hope
and pray that she will get well again and
also that there might be a place for her at
Christianville School next year.

Coeur d'Haiti
12 August 1987

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We are sorry that

communicated with you,

i t has been a few months since we last

but political problems in the country had

broken our line of communication both by mail and by phone since

the f i r s t of June.

It is with great sadness that we report to you that the

political problems in Haiti have rekindled.

The Haitian people
have become very impatient with the present governing council,
and have vowed to overthrow the government at whatever the cost.
For the past two months, country wide general strikes have been
called, lasting 6 to 7 days in a row.
During a strike, all
businesses, government offices, everything but hospitals must close
and absolutely no private or public vehicles are allowed on the
road.

Vehicles found on the road are stoned and burned.

What

began as peaceful political demonstrations in Port au Prince have

progressed into violent unpredictable outbreaks, thus making i t
dangerous to travel

to Port au Prince even when the strike is

lifted.

Due to these circumstances,

the fact that all we need to exist

is purchased or obtained in Port au Prince, the fact that Chris

is pregnant and was unable to reach the doctor in Port au Prince,
because our work requires traveling on the roads extensively, and
it is now unsafe to do so, for these and other reasons, we felt
it best to leave Haiti at the present time.
Our absence from the field is temporary!
We plan to return
to Haiti as soon as the political situation permits.
If Haiti
is able to stay on its political agenda and seat a president in
February, we plan to return several months after,

pending the

country's stabilization.
We do ask for your continued support for God's work in Haiti.

Both the church and school are continuing even in our ab.sence.
The group of young leaders we have been training these past two
years have taken over responsibilities in the church.
The school
is being run by the Haitian principal who has been with us since
its opening.
We feel confident that these workers are capable
of continuing the work and ask for your prayers on their behalf.
While we are in the U.S.,

we will reside in Atlanta,

GA,

taking the opportunity to minister at Wayne's home church, Kenwood

Christian.
Chris is making plans to work on furthering her degree,
while also preparing for a new baby in February.
The last two months and our exit from Haiti has been physically
and emotionally draining.
Due to the strikes, fuel for electricity
is having to be conserved.
We were without electricity from 8
a.m. until 7 p.m. each day.
Summer in Haiti is Hot, but June and
July days without even a fan are unbearable!
Chris was beginning
to suffer from frequent partial loss of vision and severe headaches,
which we felt were a dangerous condition during pregnancy.
A good
day's work was almost physically impossible for either of us due
to the heat and not being able to travel to the church/school on
weekdays.
We had to leave our home after midnight to bypass riots
and roadblocks on the way to the airport.
We are informing you of all this only to help underscore the
gravity of the situation with which we were faced.
Our decision
to leave Haiti was not made without a large amount of inner
struggle, deep consideration, and prayer.
We are praying fervently
for Haiti to resolve their political problems in order that we
might be able to return and continue in the work of God's Kingdom.
We offer our deepest thanks to those who know of the problems

we were facing and lifted up prayers in our behalf.

We also deeply

appreciate those who continually pray for us!

I t was your prayers
that brought us safely home!

STUDIES CONTINUE:
Upon the arrival of Brian & Jane, a
special in-depth Bible Study Class has
been started at Ticousin.

The class is

designed to train potential leaders in

the church, and strict requirements are
placed on all the participants. All
those in the class are required to take
notes on all sermons and teaching, keep

a notebook, and be prepared for quizes

and tests. Brian and Wayne alternate
teaching from month to month.

They have

started the class with the very basics

of an overall survey of the entire Bible.
Please pray for those in the class, that
they might understand and take hold of
God's Word and grow spiritually!

** Please forgive us for not writing, sooner!

Bad cases of the flu and also "pink eye" have
slowed us down somewhat. Pray for UsI!

OPPORTUNITIES
September and October were full of
preparation for the opening of school.
Wayne built benches, tables, and black
boards; Chris measured for uniforms,
ordered books, and conducted parents
meetings, and Jane gave all 9_7 children
a good physical examination!!
These weeks were so extra-ordinarily
busy that Cod sent us someone to help

just when we needed her!!

Tammy O'Blenis,

from Bonita Springs Christian Church,

spent 9 days with us helping in our
labors.

She was an excellent blackboard

painter, and a big help all the way

around!
THANK YOU ! to Bonlt.a Springs
