Many people regard hearing and listening as the same thing, but there is a
great difference between the two. Hearing is dependent only upon the ears,
but listening utilizes the mind and often the eyes. Your ears permit you to hear
sounds, the mind enables you to decipher those sounds into words and then
changes them into thoughts and ideas.

You may not have considered the wyes to be an important tool in listening. Yet
what you see when a person is speaking could sometimes be of as much
importance as what you hear.

A speakers facial expression may completely

change the meaning of the words he is saying.


Listening in Business. Efficient listening habits play a part in a person success
in all reas of life, but particularly in business.

So important are habits of

listening that a number of the worlds most progressive organizations find it


worth their while to provide short listening courses for many of their managers.
Effective listening is valuable to managers.

Successful and experienced

managers do not just give orders. They do a lit of listening. They listend to
their people to find out waht they think about the Company and about their
Jobs so that they can establish good relations. They listen to staff members
often are glad to express their ideas on many subjects when they have a good
audience.

approximately one third of a person s walking hours are spent in listening in
school, in the home, or at work. People listen about three times as much as
they read such publications as newspapers, magazines, books, circulars, and
other advertising matter. The advantages of good listening are acknowledged
to be great.

They include increased learning and promotions, and better

understanding and appreciation of the spoken Word. On the other hand, por
listening habits may bring difficulties and trouble in life. Often school dropouts
fail in their studies because they do not know how to listen.

LISTENING ON THE JOB. The advantages of good listening habits are quite
tangible when you hold a job. They often mean a bigger paycheck. Beginners
must listen to instructions and directions from managers and others in the
organization. THey must listen to suggestions and Frank criticism in order to do
their job efficiently. To geta head in a job, they must know what is going on in
their department and in the Company, and they can learn what is going on best
by listening intelligently.
