Advanced Structural Design - Web course

COURSE OUTLINE
The fundamental design philosophies of concrete and steel structures have
b e e n introduced in the basic courses for undergraduate students of civil
engineering.
This course "Advanced Structural Design" deals with the design aspects of a
few special structures with a view to simulation of realistic behavior as closely as
possible.
For each type of structure, the modeling and analysis aspects will be initially
discussed. The underlying design philosophies will be emphasized along with
the procedure.
The Indian and international design guidelines for each type of structure will be
referred to along with case studies.
The categories of structures which are going to be dealt with in this course are
reinforced concrete frame buildings, liquid retaining structures, earth retaining
structures, gantry girders, steel railway truss bridges and steel railway plate
girder bridges.
This advanced course material on structural design is expected to be useful to
undergraduate students, postgraduate students, teachers and practitioners.
Contents:
Modeling of RC building frames, load calculations with detailed emphasis on
seismic loading, analysis and design using computer programs.
Design philosophies and procedures for liquid retaining structures, earth
retaining structures, gantry girders, steel railway truss bridges and steel railway
plate girder bridges.
