1.GENERALINFORMATIONABOUTTHEHIGHERSCHOOLCERTIFICATE
1.1 INTRODUCTION
PerformanceinHigherSchoolCertificateAssessmentisasimportantasyourperformanceintheHSC
Examination.TheBoardofStudieshassetrequirementsforbothschoolsandstudents.(Syllabus
andassessmentinformationisavailableontheBoardofStudieswebsite:
www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au)Studentsmustensuretheyareawareoftheserequirements.
Furtherinformationoranyothermatterrelatingtoseniorassessmentcanbeobtainedfromthe
YearAdviser,FacultyHeadTeachersorDeputyPrincipal.
1.2 THEHIGHERSCHOOLCERTIFICATE
TobeeligiblefortheawardoftheHigherSchoolCertificate,studentsmust:
a) havegainedtheRecordofSchoolAchievementorsuchotherqualificationsastheBoardof
Studiesconsiderssatisfactory
b) havecompletedHSC:AllMyOwnWork(oritsequivalent)
c) havesatisfactorilycompletedcoursesthatcomprisethepatternofstudyrequiredbythe
BoardfortheawardoftheHigherSchoolCertificate
d) sitforandmakeaseriousattemptattherequisiteHigherSchoolCertificateexaminations.
1.3 PATTERNOFSTUDY
CandidatesfortheHigherSchoolCertificatemustundertakeaprogramofstudyconsistingof
atleast12unitsofPreliminaryCourses,andatleast10unitsofHSCCourses.
BoththePreliminaryandHSCpatternsofstudyMUSTinclude:
atleastsixunitsofBoardDevelopedcourses,
atleasttwounitsofaBoardDevelopedcourseinEnglish,
atleastthreecourseswhichareoftwounitvalue(orgreater),and
atleastfoursubjects.
(Note:TosatisfypatternofstudyrequirementsfortheHigherSchoolCertificate,amaximumofsix
PreliminaryunitsandsixHSCunitscanbecountedfromSciencecourses.)
1.4 SATISFACTORYCOMPLETIONOFACOURSE
Studentswillbeconsideredtohavesatisfactorilycompletedacourseif,inthePrincipalsview,
thereissufficientevidencethattheyhave:
a) followedthecoursedevelopedorendorsedbytheBoardofStudies
b) appliedthemselveswithdiligenceandsustainedefforttothesettasksandexperiences
providedinthecoursebytheschool
c) achievedsomeorallofthecourseoutcomes.
Satisfactorycompletionofacourseinvolvesparticipationinexperiences,whichareintegral
requirementsofthesyllabusincludingsuchthingsasassignments,classparticipationand
practicalwork.Studentsarerequiredtocompleteallsettasks,notonlythoseforassessment.
ForthePrincipaltodeemthemassatisfactorilycompletingthecourse,studentsmustmakea
seriousattemptatassessmenttasksinexcessof50%oftheavailablemarksforacourse.
Attendanceisanintegralpartofsatisfactorilycompletingacourse.Theschoolrecognises
aminimumof85%attendanceforsatisfactorycompletionofcoursework(see3.24,3.25.See
pages25,26forsamplecopyofOfficialWarningLetter).

HIGHERSCHOOLCERTIFICATECREDENTIALS
2.1 THEHIGHERSCHOOLCERTIFICATE
Schoolbased assessment tasks will contribute to 50% of your marks at the HSC. Your school
assessment mark will be based on your performance in assessment tasks undertaken during
eachcourse.ThisAssessmentBookletexplainstheprocedures andrequirementsoftheschool
assessmentprogram.
Note: Assignments and projects developed for assessment in one subject may not be used
eitherpartiallyorinfullforassessmentinanyothersubject.
Theother50%ofthemarkswillbebasedonyourperformanceintheHSCexaminationforeach
subject.
TheHigherSchoolCertificateisatestamurdocument,issuedbytheBoardofStudies,which
statesthatastudenthasmetalloftherequirementsandhasbeenawardedanHSC.
On the satisfactory completion of your Higher School Certificate, you will receive a portfolio
containing:
The HSC Testamur the official certificate confirming that you have fulfilled all the
requirementsfortheawardoftheHigherSchoolCertificate.
The Record of Achievement lists the HSC courses you have successfully completed, as
wellasthemarksandbandsyouhaveachievedineachcourse.From2014,GradesAE
willbelistedforcompletedPreliminaryCourses.
CourseReportsforeveryHSCBoardDevelopedcourse,studentsreceiveaCourseReport
showing their marks, the Performance Scale for that course, and the Performance Band
description for the course. A graph showing the statewide distribution of marks in the
courseisalsoshown.
2.2 THEYEAR12RECORDOFACHIEVEMENT
ThisisadocumentwhichprovidestheactualHigherSchoolCertificateresultscoursesstudied,
withtheirexaminationmark,assessmentmarksandpercentilebands.Forallcoursesinvolving
anexternalexamination,theRecordofAchievementwillshowtwosetsofmarksandindicate
thepositionofthatstudentinrelationtoallNSWstudentswhostudiedthecourse.
Thefirstsetofmarkswillbetheexaminationresultsineachcoursewhichhasbeenstudiedand
presentedfortheHSCexamination.Thesecondsetofmarkswillbethemoderatedassessment
ofthestudentineachcoursestudied.Theassessmentscoresprovidedbytheschoolwillbe
moderated(adjusted)accordingtotheschoolsperformanceintheexternalHSCexamination
inthatcourse.
NSWsecondarystudentsnowreceiveGradesAtoE(measuredagainstacommonstatewide
gradescale)forallcompletedcoursesinYear10andYear11.From2014,theHSCRecordof
AchievementwillalsodisplaystudentsPreliminarycoursegrades.
2.3 MODERATEDASSESSMENTMARKS
EachschoolconductsanAssessmentProgramforitsstudentsineachcourse,andreports
studentsassessmentmarkstotheBoardofStudies.Everyschool,therefore,assessesitsown
studentsindividuallyonworkdoneforeachHSCcourseprovidedattheschool.
Schoolsusedifferentassessmenttasks,havedifferentmarkingstandards,andhavestudentsof
varyingabilities.Duetothesedifferences,theprocessofmoderationisneededtoallow
studentsassessmentmarkstobecompared.

ModerationadjuststheassessmentmarksofaschoolgroupbyusingtheirExaminationMarksin
thatcourse.TheModeratedAssessmentMarksontheRecordofAchievementcanbeusedto
comparetheperformancesofstudentsatdifferentschoolswhohavecompletedthesame
course.
2.4 PERFORMANCEBANDS
SixPerformanceBands(Band6beingthehighest)givestudentsanindicationoftheir
performanceinacourseinrelationtostatedsyllabusoutcomes,andrelativetootherstudentsin
NSWwhocompletedthecourse.
For2UnitCourses,themaximumpossiblemarksis100,and:

Band5correspondstomarksfrom80to89
Band4correspondstomarksfrom70to79
Band3correspondstomarksfrom60to69

Extensioncoursesareof1unitvalueandhaveamaximumpossiblemarkof50,withthe
exceptionofMathematicsExtension2.Fourbandsareusedinreportingextensioncourses:

2.5 SCALINGFORTHEAUSTRALIANTERTIARYADMISSIONRANK(ATAR)
UsingboththescaledExaminationMarksandmoderatedAssessmentMarks,theUniversity
AdmissionsCentre(UAC)carriesoutafurtherscalingprocesswhichleadstothecalculationof
eachstudentsAustralianTertiaryAdmissionRank(ATAR).
TheATARisanumberbetween0.00and99.95(withincrementsof0.05).Itprovidesameasure
ofoverallacademicachievementintheHSC,whichassistsuniversitiesinrankingapplicantsfor
universityselection.
Themarksawardedtoeachstudentineachcoursearereadjustedtakingintoaccountthe
generalabilitylevelofthegroupofstudentsdoingeachcourse.Thisgeneralabilitylevelofeach
groupiscalculatedbyconsideringtheirperformanceinallthecoursestakenbythegroup.
Onlyafterthisscalingprocessisitvalidtoaddupthemarksawardedtoastudentandusethis
totaltocalculatetheATAR.ItisnotpossibletoobtaintheATARbyacombinationofthemarks
orpercentilebandswhichappearontheRecordofAchievement.
AcandidatesATARisbaseduponthescaledaggregateofthemarksinthebesttenunitsof
BoardDevelopedcourse,subjecttothefollowingconditions:
a) thebesttwounitsofEnglishmustbeincludedintheATAR
b) thebesteightunitsfromtheremainingBoardDevelopedCoursesareincluded
c) nomorethantwounitsofCategoryBcoursesmaybeincluded.
TheATARisarank,notamark.TheonlypurposeoftheATARistoassistuniversitiesinranking
schoolleaverapplicantsfortertiaryselectioninafairandequitableway.TheATARshouldnot
beusedforanyotherpurpose.

3.
SCHOOLASSESSMENTPROCEDURES
TheBoardofStudiesrequiresthatschoolsprovideanassessmentofeachstudentsperformance
ineachHigherSchoolCertificateCourse.
Schoolassessmentresultswillnotbeincreasedtocompensateforfactorssuchasextended
illnessormisadventurethatmayhaveaffectedastudentsperformancethroughoutthe
course.
Teacherswillassessthestudentsactualperformance,notthepotentialperformance.
3.1 RIGHTSANDRESPONSIBILITIES
Theschoolisresponsiblefor:
a) settingassessmenttaskswhichwillbeusedtomeasurestudentperformanceineach
componentofacourse
b) specifyingamark/weightingforeachassessmenttask
c) informingstudentsoftherequirementsofeachassessmenttask
d) keepingrecordsofeachstudentsperformanceoneachassessmenttask
e) providingstudentswithinformationontheirprogress.
Differentcourseswillhavedifferentnumbersandtypesofassessmenttasks.
FurtherdetailsabouteachassessmenttaskcanbeobtainedfromthecourseteacherortheHead
Teacherforthesubject.
Studentsareresponsiblefor:
a) meetingallcourserequirements,includingattendanceatclasses
b) applyingthemselveswithdiligenceandsustainedefforttothesetworkandexperiences
providedineachcourse
c) beingawareofassessmentrequirementsandprocedures
d) makingaseriousattemptatallassessmenttasks.Studentswhodonotmakeaserious
attemptatassessmenttasksinexcessof50%oftheavailablemarksmayreceivean
Ndeterminationforthatcourse(see3.24and3.25).
e) theirpersonalhonestyworksubmittedmustbethestudentsownwork,andsources
whichhavebeenconsultedorquotedmustbeacknowledged
f) submittingalltasksonorbeforetheduedate
g) beingpresentforallinclasstasksandexaminations.
3.2 ASSESSMENTSCHEDULEBOOKLETANDTIMEFRAME
ThisAssessmentBookletprovidesyouwithanassessmentscheduleforeachofyoursubjects
(seepages2749).Eachassessmentschedulelistsforeachtask:theapproximatedate(Term
andWeek),typeoftask,anticipatedsyllabuscomponents,weightingsandoutcomestobe
assessed,aswellastheschoolassessmentweighting.Attheconclusionofthesubject
assessmentschedulesinthisAssessmentBookletisaSummaryofAssessmentTasks(seepages
50,51)thiswillallowyoutodrawupyourowndiaryofassessmenttaskstoassistyouin
managingandcompletingthesetasks.Ifyouhaveaproblemwithtoomanytasksscheduledat
theonetime,seeyourYearAdviserimmediately.
StudentsmustbeinformedinwritingoftheACTUALdateanddetailsoftheassessmenttask,at
leastTWOWEEKSbeforethetask.

3.3 NOTIFICATIONOFASSESSMENTTASKS
Theduedateanddetailsofanassessmenttaskwillbenotifiedtostudentsinwritingatleast
TWOWEEKSbeforethetask.
Afterthewrittennotificationhasbeenissued,ifachangeofdateforthecompletionofthetask
isrequiredthereisnoneedfortwoweeksnoticeprovidedthetaskisnotbeingbroughtforward.
Anychangesofdatewillbenotifiedinwriting.
Notethatwrittennotificationhasprecedenceoveranyinformationlistedintheassessment
schedulescontainedinthisAssessmentBookletthatis,detailsofassessmenttaskslistedin
thisAssessmentBooklet(suchastypeoftask,syllabuscomponents,weightingsandoutcomesto
beassessed)maychangefromthedateofissueofthebooklet,sothewrittennotificationwillbe
usedtolistthecorrectdetailsforeachassessmenttask.
Insomecircumstances,itmaybenecessarytoalterthedateofthetask(thatis,TermandWeek)
fromthatlistedintheassessmentscheduleinthisAssessmentBooklet.Whenthisoccurs,
studentsMUSTbeinformedofanychangestothedateinwriting,andTWOWEEKSinadvance.
ThePrincipalistobeconsultedifitisnotpossibletogivetwoweeksnoticeforchangedtasks.
Note:Ifitoccursthatanassessmenttaskhasbeenscheduledatatimewhichsubsequently
coincideswithindustrialactionbystaff,thenthetaskwillbepostponedandstudentswillbe
informedinwritingoftherescheduleddateofthetask.
Thewrittennotificationofeachtaskmustinclude:
thedateandtimeofwhenthetaskwilltakeplaceorwhenthetaskisdue
componentsandtheirweightingasspecifiedinthesyllabuspackage
thegeneralnatureoftheassessmenttask
theweightvalueofthetaskinrelationtothetotalweightedmarkforthecourse.
Forassessmenttaskscompletedoutsidetheclassroom,thewrittennotificationmustalsoinclude:
aStatementofAuthenticityandAcademicIntegrity(thismustbesignedbythestudentand
submittedwiththecompletedassessmenttasksee3.5and3.20).
Whereappropriate,markingcriteria/informationabouthowthetaskwillbeassessedwillalsobe
included.
DatesforassessmenttaskswillbesubmittedtotheDeputyPrincipalresponsiblefortheSchool
Calendarwhowillmonitorthescheduleoftaskstoensurethattasksareevenlyspreadandclashes
avoided.
3.4 ABSENCEWHENATASKISNOTIFIED
Wheneverstudentsareabsentfromschool,itistheirresponsibilitytoensurethattheyknowwhat
workhasbeenmissedandtocatchupwiththatwork.Thesameconditionsapplyifstudentsare
absentwhenwrittennotificationofanassessmenttaskisissued.Noautomaticextensionisgranted
tostudentswhoareabsentonthedaythenoticeofthetaskisgiven.However,ifastudenthashad
aprolongedabsence,onthedayoftheirreturntoschooltheymaysubmittotheDeputyPrincipal
fortheirYearorthePrincipalanAssessmentTaskAppealForm(withrelevantdocumentationsee
3.6,3.8below.Seepage24forsamplecopyofform).

3.5 SUBMISSIONOFTASKS
Forassessmenttaskswhicharecompletedoutsidetheclassroom:
aStatementofAuthenticityandAcademicIntegrity(whichispartofthewrittennotification)
mustbesignedbythestudentandsubmittedwiththecompletedassessmenttask(see3.3
and3.20)
studentsmustuseandfollowtheschoolsAcknowledgingSourcesinAssessmentTasks
(see4.14.4)toacknowledgeanycomponentofthestudentsworkthathasbeenwritten,
createdordevelopedbyothers
alltasksaretobesubmittedbythedesignateddayandtime(asperthewrittennotification).
AlltaskssubmittedafterthedesignatedtimewillbedeemedtobeLATE(see3.8,3.11and3.17
below).
Allfacultiesmustmaintainarecordoftaskssubmitted.Tasksmustbesubmittedinaccordancewith
theinstructionsfromthefaculty.
3.6 EXTENSIONTOSUBMITORCOMPLETEANASSESSMENTTASK
Itisthestudentsresponsibilitytoensureallassessmenttasksaresubmittedbytheduedateor
performedinclassatthespecifiedtime.Unlessanapplicationforanextensionhasbeenapproved
bytheDeputyPrincipalorPrincipal,thelatesubmissionorcompletionofataskwillresultinZERO
marksbeingawardedforthattask(see3.11and3.17below).
ExtensionsforassessmenttaskscompletedoutsidetheclassroommustbegiventotheDeputy
PrincipalresponsibleforthestudentsYearorthePrincipalusingtheschoolsAssessmentTask
AppealForm(seesamplecopypage24)wellbeforetheduedateofthetask.
Ifastudentisunabletocompleteataskatthespecifiedtimetheymustseekanextensionfromthe
DeputyPrincipalresponsiblefortheirYearorthePrincipalusingtheschoolsAssessmentTask
AppealForm(see3.8below).
Extensionswillonlybegrantedincasesofsevereillnessorotherexceptionalcircumstances.A
medicalcertificatewillberequiredincasesofillness.Holidays,routinemedicalordental
appointments,drivingtests,parttimeworkcommitmentsandroutinesportingcommitmentsare
examplesofgroundslikelytobeunsuccessfulwhenapplyingforanextension.
Ifyourextensionisnotgranted,youmustsubmittheincompletetaskorcompletethetaskonthe
designateddate.
AnextensionoftimeforthesubmissionorcompletionoftasksmayonlybegrantedbytheDeputy
PrincipalorPrincipalafterconsultationwiththeappropriateHeadTeacher.Applicationssubmitted
aftertheduedate(oftasksubmission)orspecifiedtime(ofcompletingthetask)willnotbe
considered.
3.7 PRIORKNOWLEDGEOFABSENCE
Whereastudenthasaclashbetweenanassessmenttaskandanotherschoolactivity,the
studentMUSTnotifytheDeputyPrincipalresponsiblefortheirYearorthePrincipalandfollow
3.6above.
Whereastudentknowsinadvancethattheywillbeabsentonthedaythatanassessmenttaskis
tobesubmitted,thestudentmustNOTIFYTHEDEPUTYPRINCIPALANDTHEIRCLASSTEACHER,
andsubmittheworkbeforetheduedate.Studentswhofailtosubmitthetaskbeforethedue
dateanddonotmakearrangementsforitssubmissionontheduedateMUSTcompletean
AssessmentTaskAppealFormasin3.8below.

3.8 ILLNESS/MISADVENTUREPROCEDURES
Itisthestudentsresponsibilitytoensureallassessmenttasksaresubmittedbytheduedateor
performedinclassatthespecifiedtime.Absencefromschoolontheduedateforthe
submissionofanassessmenttask,oronthedayofanassessmenttask,willnotberegardedas
satisfactorygroundsforthegrantingofanextensionoftime(see3.6and3.7above).Thiswill
notbevariedunlessthereareexceptionalcircumstances(andonlyafterconsultationwiththe
DeputyPrincipalorPrincipal).
Studentsareadvisedtocompleteallassessmenttaskstothebestoftheirabilityandtoadvise
theschoolIMMEDIATELYifcircumstanceswillpreventthemfromdoingso.
1) Astudentwhoisabsentfromschoolforavalidreasononthedayanassessmenttaskisdue
tobehandedinhastheresponsibilitytoensurethattheentireworkissubmittedtothe
relevantclassteacherby9.00amontheduedate,ortoensureaparentnotifiestheschool
bytelephoneby9:00amonthedaytheassessmenttaskisdue:
tospeaktotherelevantHeadTeachertomakearrangementsforthetasktobe
submittedbyfaxoremailonthatday
or
toinformtheHeadTeacherthattheywillbeunabletosubmitthetaskonthatday,
andgiveananticipateddateofwhenthetaskwillbesubmitted
Onthedayoftheirreturntoschool,thestudentmustseetheDeputyPrincipalorPrincipal
tosubmitanAssessmentTaskAppealForm(sampleformonpage24)andtoprovide
independentevidenceofthefacts,detailingwhythecircumstancespreventedthemfrom
submittingthetaskontime.Detailscanbesuppliedonaconfidentialbasiswherenecessary.
StudentswhoappealonthegroundsofillnessMUSTprovideamedicalcertificateforthe
relevanttimeperiod.Medicalcertificatesobtainedaftertheeventwillnotbeaccepted.
AmarkofZEROwillberecordedforthetaskifnoAssessmentTaskAppealFormis
submittedbythestudenttoexplaintheirabsence,ortheAssessmentTaskAppealsubmitted
bythestudentisnotapproved(see3.17).
2) Astudentwhoisabsentfromschoolforavalidreasononthedayofanassessmenttask
MUSTensureaparentnotifiestheschoolbytelephoneby9:00amonthedayofthe
assessmenttasktoinformtherelevantHeadTeacherthattheywillbeunabletocomplete
thetaskonthatday,andgiveananticipateddatefortheirreturntoschool.
Onthedayoftheirreturntoschool,thestudentmustseetheDeputyPrincipalorPrincipal
tosubmitanAssessmentTaskAppealForm(sampleformonpage24)andtoprovide
independentevidenceofthefacts,detailingwhythecircumstancespreventedthemfrom
attemptingthetask.Detailscanbesuppliedonaconfidentialbasiswherenecessary.
StudentswhoappealonthegroundsofillnessMUSTprovideamedicalcertificatecertifyingthe
illnessoccurredonthedayoftheassessmenttask.Medicalcertificatesobtainedafterthe
eventwillnotbeaccepted.
Thestudentmustbepreparedtositforthetask,orifdeemedappropriate,asubstitutetask,on
thedayoftheirreturntoschool(see3.12).
AmarkofZEROwillberecordedforthetaskifnoAssessmentTaskAppealFormissubmittedby
thestudenttoexplaintheirabsence,ortheAssessmentTaskAppealsubmittedbythestudentis
notapproved(see3.17).

toprovideanexplanationastowhytheyfeeltheirperformanceintheassessmenttaskhad
beenadverselyaffected.Notethatexceptionalcircumstancesdonotincludesickness.The
studentmustreturnthecompletedAssessmentTaskAppealFormtotheDeputyPrincipalor
Principal,withtherequiredindependentevidence,withinanagreedtimeframe.
IftheAssessmentTaskAppealisnotapproved,thenthestudentwillreceivethemarkthey
gainedonthetask.IftheAssessmentTaskAppealisapproved,theDeputyPrincipalorPrincipal
willadvisethestudentofthecourseofactiontobetaken(see3.12below).
4) StepstobetakenifastudentissickDURINGthecompletionofanassessmenttaskatschool:
(i) ThestudentMUSTnotifytheclassteacher/examsupervisorwhowillofferthe
appropriateassistanceandwillimmediatelynotifytherelevantHeadTeacher.
(ii) Ifthestudentchoosestheycancontinuewiththecompletionofthetask.NOEXTRA

(iii) Ifthestudentisunwellandunabletoproceedwiththecompletionoftheassessment
task,theywillbesignedoutviatheschoolSickBayandallowedtogohome.Thestudent
willbeadvisedtoseeadoctorimmediately.TherelevantHeadTeacherwillnotifythe
DeputyPrincipalresponsibleforthestudentsYearorthePrincipal.
Onthedayoftheirreturntoschool,thestudentmustseetheDeputyPrincipalor
PrincipaltosubmitanAssessmentTaskAppealForm(see3.6and3.12)andmustbe
preparedtositforthetask,orifdeemedappropriate,asubstitutetask.Amedical
certificateverifyingtheillnessonthedayoftheassessmenttaskMUSTbeprovided.
Medicalcertificatesobtainedaftertheeventwillnotbeaccepted.
Note:AppealsinitiatedafterassessmenttaskresultshavebeenissuedwillNOTbeconsidered
inanycircumstances.
3.9 ABSENCEONTHEDAYBEFOREATASKANDATTENDANCEONTHEDAYOFATASK
Studentswillattendalltimetabledlessonsorscheduledschoolactivitiesontheschooldayprior
toanassessmenttask.Whereataskisduelaterintheday,thenstudentsmustattendalllessons
priortothetaskonthatday.
Thestudentmustprovideindependentevidenceofthefacts,detailingwhythecircumstances
preventedthembeingatschoolthedaypriortotheassessmenttask,orwhytheycouldnot
attendalllessonspriortothetaskonthedayoftheassessmenttask.Detailscanbesuppliedon
aconfidentialbasiswherenecessary.StudentswhoappealonthegroundsofillnessMUST
provideamedicalcertificatecertifyingtheillnessoccurredonthedaypriortotheassessment
task,oronthedayoftheassessmenttask(whicheverisapplicable).Medicalcertificates
obtainedaftertheeventwillnotbeaccepted.
Ifproofofillnessorleaveisnotapproved,thenthestudentsassessmentmarkforthattaskwill
bereducedby10%.
Thestepsoutlinedin3.8abovemustbefollowedifastudentissickDURINGthecompletionofa
taskatschool,orifastudentbelievesthatexceptionalcircumstanceshaveadverselyaffected
theirperformance.

3.10 MAJOREXAMINATIONS
ThemajorexaminationsintheHSCCoursearetheYear11Term4HSCAssessmentDays,the
Year12HalfYearlyandtheYear12TrialHigherSchoolCertificate.
Inthetwoschoolweekspriortothesemajorexaminations:
1) studentsMUSTattendalltimetabledlessonsorscheduledschoolactivities(forthedates
oftherequireddays,seeSummaryofAssessmentTaskspages50,51). Anystudent
absentinthistimewillrequireamedicalcertificatetoverifytheirabsenceandMUSTsee
theDeputyPrincipalfortheirYearorthePrincipal,onthedayoftheirreturntoschool,to
submitanAssessmentTaskAppealFormwiththeirmedicalcertificate(see1.4,3.24and
3.25.Seepages25,26forsamplecopyofOfficialWarningLetter).Medicalcertificates
obtainedaftertheeventwillnotbeaccepted.
2) theexpectationisthatallclassesaretaughtbytheregularclassteacher.Duringthistime
theschoolwillendeavourtominimiseteachersbeingonanexcursionforanotheryear
grouporbeingonProfessionalLearningactivities.
3) ifstudentsknowthattheywillbeabsentduringthistimeduetoexceptional
circumstances,theyneedtoapplytotheDeputyPrincipalresponsiblefortheirYearorthe
PrincipalusingtheschoolsAssessmentTaskAppealFormwellbeforethestartofthemajor
examinationsdocumentaryevidencewillberequiredforverification.

UnlesstheDeputyPrincipalorPrincipalreceivesacompletedAssessmentTaskAppealForm
thatprovidesanacceptableexplanationforthelatesubmission/completionofatask(see3.8
above),thestudentwillreceiveZEROmarksforthattask(see3.17below).

3.12 GRANTINGOFANASSESSMENTTASKAPPEAL
IfanAssessmentTaskAppealhasbeenapproved,thentheDeputyPrincipalorPrincipalmay:
authorise for the student to complete the assessment task, or where appropriate, a
substitute task, upon the students return to school or as soon as practicable after the
studentsreturn
authoriseforanestimatetobegiven
grantanextensionoftime
determineanalternativeprocedure(inconsultationwiththerelevantHeadTeacher).
ImportantNote:YourapplicationforanAssessmentTaskAppealisnoguaranteethatitwill
beapproved.
3.13 MARKSAWARDEDFORSUBSTITUTETASKS/EXTENSIONSOFTIME
Inthosecaseswhereasubstitutetaskhasbeenauthorised(asabove),themarkgivenforthe
taskwillbeusedtoestimatethestudentslevelofachievementofthesyllabusoutcomes
assessedbythetask.Thisisnecessarybecauseasubstitutetaskdoesnotalwaysduplicatethe
sameconditionsandcontentastheoriginaltask.
Whereasubstitutetaskcannotbegiven,amarkwillbeallocatedwiththeapprovalofthe
DeputyPrincipalorPrincipal.
3.14 EXCURSIONSANDFIELDTRIPS
Studentsmustattendthoseexcursionsandfieldtrips,whicharepartoftheHSCcourse
assessmentandcompletethesetwork.
Excursionswillnotbescheduledin:
1) thetwoschoolweeksprecedingtheYear11Term4HSCAssessmentDays
2)Year12afterTerm1.
ThePrincipalmayallowexcursionstorunduringthesetimesbutonlyinexceptional
circumstances.
TheschoolwillalwaysendeavourtominimiseclasheswithAssessmentTasksandschool
organisedactivities.
Studentsinvolvedinaschoolorganisedexcursion,orschoolorganisedcommitment,thatison
thedaybeforeorthedayofanAssessmentTaskinanothersubject,doNOThavetocompletean
AssessmentTaskAppeal.Inthiscase,theteacherorganisingtheexcursion/schoolcommitment
mustgiveacopyofstudentnamesinattendancetotherelevantHeadTeacherandtheDeputy
PrincipalresponsibleforthestudentYeargroup.

3.15 TECHNOLOGYANDASSESSMENTTASKS
Moststudentsnowusesomeformofelectronictechnologytoproducetheirhandinassessment
tasks.Someassessmenttaskswillrequirethatstudentssubmitthetaskinelectronicform,and
thiswillbespecifiedwhenthetaskisset.Allothertasksmustbesubmittedinhardcopyformat.
Itistheresponsibilityofthestudenttobackupalltheirworkandtoensurethatallreasonable
stepsaretakentopreventtechnologyfailurefromhamperingtheirabilitytosubmitataskby
theduedate.TechnologyfailureisNOT,initself,avalidreasonforfailuretosubmitan
assessmenttaskontime.Technologybreakdownasgroundsforextensionwillonlybe
consideredinextremecircumstances.
Tominimiseproblemsinrelationtotechnology,studentsshouldadheretothefollowing
protocols:
whenworkingathome,continuallybackupallworkontheharddriveofyourcomputer
andonanexternalportablestoragemedia(suchasaUSBdrive)
whenworkingatschool,savethelatestversionofyourworktoyourpersonalfilesonthe
schoolserver(seeMrAlbaneseforassistanceifyouareexperiencingdifficultieswiththe
schoolserveroryouhaveforgottenyourconfidentialusernameandpassword)
taskswhicharetobesubmittedelectronicallyshouldbecheckedwellbeforetheduedate
toensurethatthedatacanbeaccessedatschool:
checkthecompatibilityofyourhomesoftwarewiththeschoolstechnology
saveacopyofthefinalversionofyourtasktoanemailaddressthatcanbe
accessedatschool(suchasyour@educationemailaccount),aswellasbringingit

Tosubmitahardcopyofyourtask,printthetaskathometoavoidanysoftwareincompatibility
problemsandtoensurethatyoudonotencounterproblemsaccessingtheschoolcomputers
(duringbusytimes,youmayhavetroubleaccessingtheschoolcomputers/printers).Ifyouare
unabletoprintyourworkathome,downloadthetaskontoexternalportablestoragemedia
(suchasaUSBdrive)andbringittoschoolforprinting.Informyourclassteacherofthis.(Note:
printingatschoolshouldonlybealastresortandmustbecompletedbeforetheduehandin

3.16 ORALTASKS
Oraltasksusuallyconsistoftwocomponentsawrittensubmissionandtheoralpresentation
itself.Theformofthewrittensubmissionwillbeexplainedbyyourteacherwhenthetaskis
distributed.
Allwrittensubmissionsmustbehandedinbythedesignatedtimeontheduedate.Allwritten
submissionshandedinafterthistimewillbedeemedLATE,unlessthereareexceptional
circumstances,andthestudentwillreceiveZEROforthewrittensubmissioncomponentofthe
task(see3.11).
Inmanycases,theactualoralpresentationsbystudentsmaytakeseveralperiodsoveranumber
ofdays.Onthespecifiedtimeanddaythatthetaskisdue,teacherswillnormallyindicateto
studentstheorderinwhichtheywillmaketheirpresentations.StudentsMUSTattendclassat

thetimeindicatedfortheiroralpresentation.Itisthestudentsresponsibilitytobereadytogive

deemedLATE,unlessthereareexceptionalcircumstances,andthestudentwillreceiveZEROfor
theoralpresentationcomponentofthetask(see3.11).
Insomecircumstances,thewrittensubmissionisthetranscriptoftheoralpresentation.Ifthis
transcriptisnotsubmittedbythedesignatedtimeonthedesignateddate,thestudentwill
receiveZEROforthetask,unlessthereareexceptionalcircumstances(see3.11).
3.17 ZEROMARKS
AZEROmarkwillbeawardedwhenastudent:
submitsatasklate(withoutavalidreason)(see3.11above)
doesnotattemptatask(nonattempt)(see3.18below)
doesnotmakeaseriousattemptatatask(nonseriousattempt)(see3.18below)
isfoundtobeinvolvedinmalpractice(see3.20below).
Insuchcases:
parents/guardianswillbeinformedinwriting

andPrincipal.
Studentswhodonotmakeaseriousattemptatassessmenttasksinexcessof50%ofthe
availablemarkswillreceiveanNdeterminationforthatcourse(see3.19,3.24and3.25.See
pages25,26forsamplecopyofOfficialWarningLetter).
3.18 NONATTEMPTOFTASKSORNONSERIOUSATTEMPTOFTASKS
Studentswillmakeaseriousattemptatallassessmenttasks.Whenastudentdoesnotattempt
anassessmenttask,amarkofZEROwillbeawarded(see3.17above).
WheretheDeputyPrincipalorPrincipaldeemastudenttohavemadeanonseriousattempt,a
markofZEROwillbeawarded(see3.17above).
Anonseriousattemptiswhenastudentsubmitsanassessmenttaskwhichshowslittleorno
thought/effort,whichisgenerallyincompleteorwhichcontainsfrivolousorobjectionable
material.Aseriousattemptisthepresentationofanassessmenttaskwhichmeetsthe
requirementsofthesettaskandwhichhasbeendonetothebestofthestudentsability.
3.19 COMPLETIONOF50%OFTOTALVALUEOFTASKS
StudentsMUSTsatisfactorilycompletemorethan50%ofallassessmenttaskssetforacoursefor
thePrincipaltodeemthemassatisfactorilycompletingthecourse(see1.4,3.24and3.25).

3.20 MALPRACTICEINASSESSMENTTASKS
Eachstudentsmarkinanassessmenttaskwillbedeterminedbythequalityofthework
producedbythestudentonly.Todemonstratehonesty,anycomponentofastudentsworkthat
hasbeenwritten,createdordevelopedbyothersmustbeacknowledgedinaccordancewiththe
schoolsAcknowledgingSourcesinAssessmentTasks(see4.14.4).Useorinclusionofmaterial
fromothersourcessuchasbooks,journalsandelectronicsources,includingtheinternet,must
beacknowledged.Dishonestbehaviourcarriedoutforthepurposeofgainingunfairadvantage
intheassessmentprocessconstitutesmalpractice,orcheating.Malpracticeinanyform,
includingplagiarism(see4.2below),isunacceptable.
Forassessmenttaskswhicharecompletedoutsidetheclassroom,aStatementofAuthenticity
and Academic Integrity must be signed by the student and submitted with the completed
assessmenttask(see3.3and3.5).Studentsmustabidebytheprinciplesofthisstatement.

Principal.
ThePrincipalwillestablishacommitteetoreviewanycasesofsuspectedmalpracticeand
determinetheappropriateactionshouldmalpracticebeproven.
Thestudent,inwriting,mustmakeanyappealagainstsuchadecisiontothePrincipal,within24
hoursofthedecisionbeingtaken.
Ifmalpracticeisproven,amarkofZEROwillbeawarded(see3.17above).
3.21 NONDISCRIMINATINGORINVALIDTASKS
Ifataskisgivenandisfoundtobenondiscriminatingbetweenstudents,beinginvalidorhaving
problemsassociatedwithitsadministration,itmaybediscardedandanalternativetaskset.
Inthesecircumstances,thePrincipalmaydeterminethatanothertaskbedone,and/oradjust
theweightingsaccordingly.Ifitisdecidedthattheoriginaltaskbestillused,itcouldhavea
reducedweighting,withtheadditionaltaskaddedtotheassessmentweightingsforthecourse.
ThePrincipalmaydecidetodiscardtheoriginaltaskcompletelyandareplacementtaskwillbe
organised.
Ifanalternativetaskistobegiventhestudentsmustbeinformedinwriting(withsufficient
notice).
3.22 COURSECHANGES,LATEENROLMENTS,ACCELERANTSANDPATHWAYSSTUDENTS
Forstudentschangingcourses,thePrincipalmustbesatisfiedthattheywillbeabletocomplete
allcourseoutcomesbeforethecompletionoftheHSCcourse.BoardofStudiesentranceand
completiondatesforcoursesmustbeadheredto.
Accelerantsshouldcompleteallassessmenttasks,ortheequivalent,thatareundertakenby
studentscompletingtheusualcourseprogram.Theschoolwillendeavourtominimisethe
conflictingdemandsofPreliminaryandHSCAssessment,butthiscannotbeguaranteed.
Pathwaysstudentsaretomeetthesamesatisfactorycoursecompletionrequirementsasother
students.

3.23 DISPUTESREGARDINGASSESSMENTTASKS
Eachstudenthastherighttoasktheclassteacherwhyaparticularmarkwasawardedfora
specificassessmenttask.Ifthestudentisdissatisfiedwiththeresponsegiven,theHeadTeacher
ofthesubjectinvolvedshouldbeconsulted.
DisputesoveranindividualtaskmustberesolvedwiththeHeadTeacherassoonaspossible.
TheHeadTeachersdecisionisfinal.WheretheclassteacheristheHeadTeacher,thestudent
hasnofurtheravenueforreview.
Note:ThePrincipalisthefinalarbiterinallassessmentmatters.
3.24 WARNINGOFNDETERMINATION
StudentsundertakingtheHSCCoursemustmakeagenuine/seriousattempttosatisfactorily
completecourseandassessmentrequirements.Theserequirementsincludestudentsapplying
themselveswithdiligenceandsustainedefforttosettasksandexperiencesprovidedforthe
coursebytheschool,regardlessofwhetherornotthesetaskscontributetothefinalassessment
mark.Attendanceisanintegralpartofsatisfactorilycompletingacourse(see1.4).
Itisamatterfortheclassteachersprofessionaljudgmenttodeterminewhetherornota
studenthasmadeagenuineattempttocompletetheserequirements.Studentsmustmakea
seriousattemptatassessmenttasksthatcontributeinexcessof50%ofthetotalassessment
mark.
Studentswhoarenotmeetingcourseand/orassessmentrequirementsatanystageofthe
coursewillbeinformed,inwriting,ofthepotentialofanNdeterminationinthecourse.
Studentsandparents/guardianswillbeinformedinwriting,allowingsufficienttimeforthe
problemtobecorrected,thusenablingthestudenttomeetthecourseand/orassessment
requirementssatisfactorily.Theschoolwillretaincopiesofallrelevantdocumentation(see
pages25,26forsamplecopyofOfficialWarningLetter).
3.25 NDETERMINATIONSANDAPPEALS
Anystudentwhoisatriskofnotmeetingcourseand/orassessmentrequirementswillbe
notifiedviaofficialschooldocumentation(seepages25,26forsamplecopyofOfficialWarning
Letter).Thepurposeofthewarningistogivethestudentsufficienttimeandopportunityto
correcttheidentifiedproblem(s).
IfastudentdoesnotmeetcourseandassessmentrequirementsinanHSCcourse,anN
determinationwillbegiven.Thismeansthatthecoursewillnotbelistedonthestudents
RecordofAchievement,anditmayalsomeanthepossiblewithholdingofthewholeHigher
SchoolCertificate.Untilastudenthassatisfactorilycompleted12unitsofPreliminaryCourses
and10unitsofHSCCourseswhichfulfiltheBoardofStudiespatternofstudyrequirements,they
willnotbeeligiblefortheawardoftheHSC.
InthecaseofExtensionCourses,studentswhodonotmeettheassessmentrequirementsofthe
corequisite2Unitcoursewillnotreceivearesultineithercourse.
ThefinaldecisionregardinganyNdeterminationrecommendationwillbemadebythe
Principal.AnystudentgivenanNdeterminationhastherighttoappealagainstthedecision.
TheappealreviewwillbeconductedbythePrincipal,DeputyPrincipal,relevantHeadTeacher,
YearAdviser,andoneteachernotinvolvedintheassessmentofthesubject.Theoutcomeofthe
appealwillbenotifiedtothestudent,theparentsandtheBoardofStudies.

3.26 CONFIDENTIALITYOFFINALMARK
ThefinalHSCassessmentmarkforeachsubjectisconfidentialandmaynotbegiventostudents.
3.27 ORDEROFMERIT/FINALRANKING
Studentswillbegivenfeedbackfromtimetotimeastotheirongoingrankinanycourse.
StudentsmayrequesttheirfinalOrderofMerit/RankinginthecourseafterthelastHSC
