Requirements
The following tables list the hardware, software, and other materials needed to set up a lab
to conduct a class of course AU14.

Overview Requirements
The AU14 has been designed to begin with AIX 5L V5.3 TL6 installed on the student
systems. AIX 6.1 will be installed by the students in lab exercise 5. For this to work, there
must be an AIX 6.1 level NIM server with an lppsource containing the base AIX 6.1 filesets
and the corresponding /spot. The course can run on P0WER4 (local, non-partitioned only),
or on POWER5 or POWER6 servers (likely partitioned with remote access). In order for
AIX 5L V5.3 to run on a POWER6 system, the image must be AIX 5L V.5.3 TL6 to
accommodate the new POWER6 hardware. The class systems must be configured with
the correct TCP/IP addresses to connect to this NIM server. On the NIM server, the AIX 6.1
lppsource and /spot must be allocated to each machine object corresponding to the student
lab systems (usually LPARs) and the bos_inst operation must be applied to each client
machine, in order for the AIX 6.1 Migration Installation to work.
If using remote systems, the student s will also need access to a HMCv7 server. The
address of the HMC must be provided to the instructor. The HMC is used to boot their
systems in SMS mode and for the installation lab.

Access Requirements
These labs require an interactive command prompt interface to the AIX lab systems.
They require a graphic interface in order to work with a CDE environment running on the
AIX lab systems.
There is a remote WebSM lab (which, while optional, is desirable), which requires a PC
running MS windows with connectivity to the AIX lab systems.
The students will need access to the HMC. That requires that they have a web browser
which is compatible with HMCv7 and has network access to the HMC.
The HMC must already have the appropriate managed system defined. If there are multiple
systems being managed by the HMC, then the HMC name for that managed system must
be provided to the instructor. If the LPAR names are different than the provided hostname
for those lpars, the HMC LPAR names must also be provided to the instructor.
An example of a lab environment which would fulfill these requirements (but where the AIX
lab systems are in a VPN) is:
A Citrix based e-lab environment with the following metaframe applications:

a. VNC portal or VMware application connecting to a MS Windows; the desktop having

connectivity to the AIX lab systems and already having a web browser installed with
the icon on the desktop.
b. VNC viewer with connectivity to the AIX lab systems, where the AIX lab systems are
configured for CDE and have a VNCserver configured for CDE.
c. PuTTY with connectivity to the AIX lab systems.
d. Either a metaframe browser (Mozilla Firefox) or a web browser on the PC MS
Windows portal (I would suggest having both).

Note: Several items in the above chart are only needed if the classroom machines and
lab environment are isolated from the internet. In that case, the lab machines need to
have the infocenter installed and configured, along with the Mozilla Firefox software.
* Also, if using local machines and they plan to install using media in the CD drive(s) of
the machine(s), there will need to be a set of AIX 6.1 and SP1 media per lab set, rather
than just one set of AIX 6.1 for loading the NIM server.

Skills Required to Set Up the Lab

The following specialized skills are required to set up the lab:
Installation and configuration NIM server and resources
Installation of AIX using a NIM server
Installation of additional AIX filesets using SMIT
Installation of AIX user using SMIT and setting passwords
Installation of the lab files using the tar command
Configuration of the IP-addresses and hostnames

Set Up Instructions
Configuration Information
The following describes the configurations of the student and/or lab set systems.
__ 1. AIX 5L V5.3 TL6 is installed on hdisk0. Do not install any additional optional
software during the initial BOS installation or during the post install configuration
assistant phase.
__ 2. Leave the hdisk1 volume empty.
__ 3. Configure the network interface on each LPAR according to the addressing and host
naming scheme of the facility that is provisioning the course lab environment.
__ 4. Update the file /etc/hosts to have the NIM server and HMC server, plus the name
resolutions for all the student lab systems.
__ 5. If non-partitioned individual machines are being provided locally, the setup can use
the IP addressing scheme of the local facility. If the class lab LAN is isolated and you
thus have the freedom to choose any address, then what follows is a suggestion of
what to use (note that if a NIM server is being used for the install lab (instead of the
CD/DVD drives on the machines, the NIM server client machine objects must use
the same addresses as the student lab machines)
__ a. Hostname for the first system is sys1 with IP-address 192.168.0.1 and
subnetmask 255.255.255.0.
__ b. Hostname for the additional systems would follow the same scheme with system
x having a hostname of sysx with IP-address 192.168.0.x and subnetmask
255.255.255.0.
__ c. Update the file /etc/hosts on each machine so that every host of your network
has entries for itself and the interfaces for all the other lab systems.
__ 6. Password for root is set to ibmaix, and the HMC ID should be set to hscroot and
password abc1234.
__ 7. The CDE should be set as default user interface. For remote graphical access, a
remote graphics facility must be available (for example VNC or Exceed).
__ 8. Configure a NIM server to support the labs:
__ a. Configure a NIM Server with a directory containing the AIX 6.1 BOS filesets as
an lppsource and create a SPOT from this.
Note that the NIM server will need the graphic interface filesets even if the NIM
server itself does a not use graphics:

__ b. Configure each system in the class as a client Machine object with the correct
corresponding IP address.
__ c. Allocate the AIX 6.1 lppsource and /spot to each client Machine
__ d. Execute a bos_inst operation on each of the client machines using rte (rather
than mksysb). Do not initiate the installation from the NIM server (allow the client
to initiate via a network boot)
__ e. Provide the class with the IP address, userid, and password to the NIM server in
case they need to do a force reset, reallocate resources, and reconfigure for
bos_inst.

Hardware Set Up Instructions

Each student lab system can be satisfied using logical partitions. Ensure that each
LPAR meets the previous stated requirements.
If there are not enough storage adapters to provide a one per LPAR, then using
virtual SCSI serviced by a VIOS server is acceptable.
If there are not enough physical ethernet adapters to have two ethernet adapters per
LPAR, then using virtual ethernet adapters is acceptable.
If the first ethernet adapter is not physical, then connectivity to the internet will need
to be facilitated by either using an LPAR (with a physical adapter) as a IP router or
using a VIO server LPAR to bridge using a Shared Ethernet Adapter.
The second ethernet adapter does not require any connectivity. If it is physical, it can
be left uncabled. If it is virtual, it does not need bridging or routing to a physical
network. In the later case, you may wish to place the additional virtual ethernet on a
separate VLAN from the remote access ethernet; while the students are not
supposed to configure the second ethernet, someone may do this and if they
duplicate some other address in the subnet - that could be a problem.

Software Set Up Instructions

if all relevant AIX documentation is installed by using the command
lslpp -l | grep AIX
__ 5. Verify network connectivity between the lab machines via the ping utility using the
host names of the exercise interfaces. Use the host command to verify that the IP
addresses resolve to the desired hostnames for the machines.
__ 6. Verify that you can access a CDE graphic interface on the lab systems. This could
either be via a locally attached graphic console (when using local System p servers
in the classroom) or via a remote graphic facility (such as VNC).
__ 7. If using PCs as the students workstations, verify that the AIX system can be
accessed successfully and with acceptable performance when running Motif
applications such as the Web-based System Manager, infocenter, or dtterm.
